This invention relates to improvements in mechanical cooling systems, and is particularly directed to a novel type of heat eX- changer for use in such 'system by means of which a structurally simple yet eficient arrangement is provided forreducing the tempera'ture of a liquid circulated through the heat exchanger to render the liquid suitably cool for drinking purposes. Specifically the invention is directed to Water coolers of the mechanically cooled type and Which are used in office buildings, factories or other similar places, although the inventiony in other as pects possesses much Wider application.
In carrying out the invention a heat ex# changer has been provided, particularly for use in water coolers', which consists of a casing in which is removably and centrally positioned a mechanically operating cooling unit, the Walls of the latter being spaced from the walls of the cylinder to provide a liquid circulating chamber, said chamber having the 4chilled surfaces of the cooling unit.

The distributor serves in a measure to help retard the flow of the liquid, due to the restricted openings 15, so that the passage of the liquid through 4the appal ratus Will be suiiiciently slow, even though under pressure, to insure the desired heat exchange.
The inner walls of the casing of cylinder 2 are coated to eliminate corrosion or contamination of the liquid, particularly when the latter is used for drinking purposes. The chamber or circulating space 8 is filled with the liquid and is replenished from time to time by Way of the inlet head 10, and is discharged through the head 12 in the bottom of the casing, the same being then led to a bubbling fountain or a circulating Water line. At the point where the Water enters the cylinder the distributor 14 is used so as to secure eicient distribution of the incoming water over all surfaces of the cooling unit, the distributor functioning to insure that the warmer or incoming Water Will be kept to the top of the casing and the cooled, usable Water at thebottoni.
What is claimed is:
1. In a cooling device, a casing-open at one end, adetachable closure for the open end of said casing, a cooling unit carried by said closure and situated longitudinally Within said casing, the longitudinal axisof said cooling unit being situated above the longitudinal axis of said casing,` a liquid intake in the top of said casing above said cooling unit, and a liquid outlet at the bottom of said casing below said cooling unit, said intake and outlet being disposed in substantially registering vertical planes.
2. In a cooling device, a casing, a cooling unit positioned Within said casing, liquid inlets and outlets entering opposite sides of said casing, and a distributor positioned between said cooling unit and said casing to initially receive the liquid entering by Way of said inlet, said distributor serving to spread the liquid over the full area of said cooling unit. l A
