ELECTRICAL CONNECTION Filed Jan. 1'7,` 1929 L n Y INVENToR im E MC CABE- ff BY 72am zo y1./ @gn i257, /0 ATTORNEY Patented Apr, 1,; 1930 *UNITED s'raxrlss ma r. moans, or CHICAGO, ILLINOIS ELECTRICAL i. QONN ECTION lead which-is connected as a permanent xture to the device at the factory and a detachable lead to a source of electricity, which 10 is attached after the device hasbeen installed at its place of operation. It is an object of this invention to provide a binding post adapted to be fixed upon the device and to which a device lead may be connected by the same means that-connects the external lead and secure the device lead in a substantially permanent manner while the external lead may be attached or. detached to the same binding post without affecting the connection of the` device lead. e With these and other objects, in view reference is made to the accompanying sheet of drawings which illustrates the preferred forms of this invention, with the understanding that minor detail changes maybe made thereinwithout departing from the scope of the invention.

Application med January 17, 1929. Serial No. 338,935.
Figure 9 is a view in eleyation of a plurality of blnding posts,'of the first form'illustrating one manner of securingthe same in place upon a device, with one post in usew Flgure `10 is a fragmentary top plan view of Figure 9. i
Figure 11 is a view similar to Figure 9, of a binding post of the second form. v
In Figures 1, 2 and 3 of the drawing, the body 1 of the binding post is shown with a smaller lshouldered portion 2 extending to the.left' with a screw 'threaded shaft projectmg therefrom. The opposite end is countersunk as shown )in Figure 3; and, as shown in Figure 4, it is preferable to'form the top of the body l upon an arc of a circle which is intercepted by parallel opposite sides joined rectangularly to 'a bottom side. The. inner y walls of the countersunk portion are formed on the arc of a circle concentric with said first circle, which provides a iange 4 about the two flat sidesl and adjoining curved top, leaving the countersink open across the Ifiat bottom J .i
side. The Han e 4 is cut away to form a slot 5 from where 1t joins the main body 1 yto a' `distance substantially one-half its height land extending about the curved -top and a short distance down each fiat parallel side, as shown in Figures 1 and 2.
A screw threaded well 6 is sunk in the main body, as shown in Figure 3, concentric with the circular Iiange, which isvadaptedto receive a correspondingly screw threaded bi'nd" ing member preferably in the form of a headed screW7, the head 8 of which may be receivedwithin the circular inner walls of the flange 4. A Figure 3 illustrates a connection between a device lead 9 and an exterior lead 10. It 90 iscustomary to form a terminal lug which will ordinarily' form a xed connection in the form of aiiat perforated disc, such as 9a as shown in FigureJ4, and a temporary connection 1s usually formed by stripping the lead of its insulation and bending the,y uncovered metal wire in the formof a loop 10a, as shown in Figure 4, to provide a terminal lug formed cfa fiat perforated metal disc 1.0"` in .which the body is slit between theperforation and the circumference, as shown in Figure 8.
In making the connection, the terminal lug 9n of the device lead 9 is inserted through the slot 5 and the screw 7 passed through the perforationthereof and engaged in the screw threaded well 6 of the binding post. When it is desired to complete the connec tion to the external wire, the end of the wire is bent, as shown in Figure 4, and hooked about the screw 7 the main body of the wire passed between the open ends of the flange 4, and the screw 7 rotated until the under side of its head 8 engages and firmly holds the terminals of the leads 9 and 10 against each other and against the llat base of the counter sink in the body 1. F
Figures-9 and 10 show one means of se curing a plurality of binding posts, of the form just described, to the casing 20 of an electrical device which means comprises a plate of insulation material 11 having a plurality of apertures formed therein through which the shouldered portions 2 of the posts l are passed and held in engagement therewith by the nuts 12 engaging the screw threaded portions 3 of the posts. When the posts 1 are formed of metal, as is usual, they are preferably insulated from the customary metal casing 20y and each other by providing shouldered artitions 18 of insulation material assed t rough slots in the plate 11 with the s oulders engaging the under side thereof and spacing the plate 11 a suicient distance from the casing to clear the nuts 12. It is also preferable to cover the portion of the casing below the binding posts with a -sheet of insulation material 14 and secure the binding osts bearing plate 11 to the casing 20 by a 1t or screw 15 passing through a block of insulation material 16, the plate v11, the sheet 14 and engaging the casing 20. It is preferable to arrange the posts in staggered relation, as shown in Figure 10, with the partitions 13 in engagement with flat sides of the posts. When so arranged the partitions not only1 secure the posts against rotation, insulate t e posts from each other, but also pre- Y vent any contact between the adjoining leads 5o connected to the respective posts.
The type of post illustrated in Figures 5, 6, 7 and 8 differs only from the one Just described in the means provided for attaching upon the device casing. In this type it is preferably to form the main body 1 cylindrical, the base with an outstanding flange 21, and the portion of the .body opposite the slot 5 cut away to form a flat side 22. When employing this type, the plate of insulation material 11 is provided with apertures corresponding in shape and size to the body of the post, the posts are inserted therethrough from the under side until the flanges 21 engage the plate 11 and then the plate secured to the casing A20 with a sheet of insulation material 14 interposed between the casing 20 and bottom of the flanged portion 21 of the posts. The shape of the vents rotation when so secured.
While it is preferable to form the binding posts of metal,` for ease of manufacture, as the irst form is readily turned from square stock and the second form froml c lindrical stock, yet the posts may be forme of insu lation material without departing from the scope of this invention. Likewise the posts may be attached or secured in any deserved manner to the device casing.
From the descri tion of the construction and application o this improved binding post, it is readily seen that, when such a post is made a part of an electrical device, a lead from the device may be connected thereto posts preat the factory in a semi-permanent mannerby inserting the perforated lead terminal lug,
insulation has been stripped, through the slot in the iiange about the counter sunk end and then inserting the bindin screw 7, the lead will become a non-detacha le part of the binding post until it is desired to complete the connection from the device, through the post, to an external wire. Then, it is only necessary to rotate the binding screw in reverse direction suiciently to allow the lead terminal or terminal lug of the external wire to be inserted through the opening in the flange on the flat side to engage the binding screw, and the screw rotated until its head firmly binds the ends of the two leads together, and the connection is completed, the upstanding flange extends above the connection and not only assists in positioning the terminals therein but is a measure of protection.
What I claim is:

An electrical connection for lead wires comprisin a post provided at one end with an upstan 'ng flange having a portion of the lian e cut away and having a slot formed in the ange adapted to receive a terminal lug, and a binding screw adapted to secure a terminal lug, when so inserted, to the ost.
2. An electrical connection for ead wires comprising a post havin one end counter sunk to form a flan e, sai flange cut away at one side and the si e opposite provided with a slot adapted to receive a terminal l and a binding screw engaging the body a a ted to secure a terminal lug, when so receive to the post within the flange. v-
3. An electrical connection for lead wires comprising a'binding post having one fiat side and provided at one end with means for` securing the same and at the other end with a flange extending therebeyond but cut away above said fiat side, said flange provided with a slot opposite said cut away ortion, adapted to receive a terminal lug, andp a binding screw adapted to engage said post and secure a teror the looped end of the wire from which the minal lug,- when inserted through said slot, and having a head adapted to enter within said ange.
