Description
q Patented Mar. 25, 1930 UNITED STATES rAreNr oFFicE FELIX LINDNER, OF LUDWIGSHAFEN-ON-THE-RHINE, GERMANY, ASSIGEOR TO I. G..
FARBENINIDUSTRIE AKTIENGESELLSCHAFT, F FRANKFORT-ONTHE-MAIN, GER- MANY, ll CQRPORATION 0F GERMANY SALTS OF ALKALINIE=EARTE METALS I No Drawing. Application filed April 25, 1927, serial No. 188,592 and in Germany June 8, 1926.
Hitherto the decomposition of alkalineearth metal sulfids with ammonium salts for the production of salts of-the alkaline-earth metals has been attempted by carrying out the reaction in aqueous suspension or sol-u tion, or by treating the dry mixture with steam. In the first two cases difiiculties arise owing to..the fact that the alkaline-earth metal sulfids are either insoluble in water ]Q or else "they combine with the water producing compounds, such for example as Ba(OH) ,Ba(SH) ,-which do not take part in the reaction.
I have now found that the alkaline earth 13 metal sulfids may be readily transformed into other salts of the alkaline-earth metals when triturated with ammonium salts. It is ad visable in order to accelerate the reaction to spray the mixture with small quantities of water during" the grinding process which may be eifected, for example in an edge mill. The transformation proceeds in an almost quantitative manner, more than 98 per cent of the sulfur in combination as sulfid usually taking part in the reaction. The reaction may be still further accelerated by heating the mill. The ammonium sulfid compounds so liberated which escape in the vapor phase, may be utilized in any known or suitable manner,- so for example for the recovery of the ammonia. The following examples will further illustrate the nature of the said invention which however is not limited to the examples.
Ewamplel 100 kilograms of technical barium sulfid, containing 88.7 per cent of barium sulfid are ground with 81.2 kilograms of ammonium nitrate, the mixture being intermit- 40 tently sprayed with water, 7 litres in all. The resulting crude barium nitrate is free from sulfur combined as sulfid.
7 Example 2 L5 179 kilogramsof strontium sulfid contain-- ing 119:6 kilograms'of SrS, are ground in an edge-runner mill with 107 kilograms of ammonium chlorid, the mixture being sprayed with water during the operation. An ex cellent yield of strontium chlorid is obtained.
Example 3 193.6 kilograms of calcium sultld and 160 kilograms of "ammonium nitrate are finely ground. The conversion can be effected without the addition of water. A good yield of calcium nitrate is obtained.
A similar procedure is adopted. in the production of salts of the alkaline-earth metals, which are insoluble in water.
lVhat I claim is:
l. The process of producing salts of alka line earthmetals which comprises grinding an alkaline earth metal sulfid with an ammonium salt of a strong acid to be combined with the alkaline earth metal.
2 The process of producing salts of alkaline earth metals which comprises grinding an alkaline earth metal sulfid with an ammonium salt of a strong acid to be combined with the alkaline earth metal, with an addition of a small amount of water.
3. The process of producing salts of alkaline earth metals which comprises grinding an alkaline earth metalv sulfid with an ammonium salt of a strong acid to be combined with the alkaline earth metal, while heating; the mass.
The process of producing alkaline earth metal nitrates which comprises grinding alkaline earth metal sulfide with ammonium nitrate while heating the mass.
5. The process of producing alkaline earth metal nitrates which comprises grinding alkaline earth metal sulfids with ammonium nitrate and an addition of a small amount of water while heating the mass in testimony whereof l have hereunto set my hand,
LINDNER.
