This invention relates to an improvement in autographic registers and manifolding strip supplies for use therewith.
An object of this invention is to provide a strip feeding machine of the character described having a maximum of convenienced accuracy in its manipulation and simplicity in its manufacture.
A further object is so structurally and functionally to improve the feeding and operating mechanism so that' a plurality of strips having printed forms thereon may be simultaneously fed conveniently and efficiently. Another object of the invention is the provision of a practical feeding and registering device Wherewith the feed of an apertured strip or strips may be interrupted and resumption of feed attained without the use f of devices to effect resumption of feed which are independent of the feed mechanism.
Other objects of the invention will in part be obvious and will in part appear hereinafter. f
The invention accordingly comprises the features of construction, combinations of elements, and arrangement of parts, which will be exemplified in the` constructions hereinafter set forth and the scope of the aplication of which will be indicated in the c aims. For a fuller understanding of the nature and objects of the invention reference should be had to the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in-which:

In the embodiment of the invention of Figs. 1-8 a suitable case 1 is provided, which includes a compartment 2 for the supply of paper strips, upon which records are t'o be made. Means to be later described is provided for supporting a plurality of rolls of l paper or the like, or for supporting a pad or book of interengaged reversely folded strips, as may be desired.
In the construction of Fig. 1, the paper record strips 3, 4 and 5 are rolled on hollow cores 6 of paper or the like, and these cores may be supported in cradles, in the manner shown in Fig. 1, or on rollers in the manner shown in Fig. 7. In the former instance, each roll of paper is suppo'rted by a plurality of pairs of friction rollers 13, and each pair of rollers is supported by a shaft 14, .held in the opposite walls of the case. The shafts are arranged to provide a bed or cradle for each roll of paper, in which the roll may have a limited rolling movement. In Fig. 7 the rolls of paper are supported by reels, each composed of a'mutual center or shaft 7, and a body 8 of wood or the like. The ends of the shaft are extended beyond the body ofthe reel, and the said ends are pointed as shown. One of the pointed ends engages a conical recess in a stationary bearing 9 on the casewall, and the other pointed end engages a movable bearing 10. This bearing is connected to one end of a spring plate 11, Whose other end is connected to the case wall, and the spring plate is engaged by a set screw 12 threaded through the wall.' By means of the spring a tension may be exerted on the strip so that it will feed smoothly and evenly.
' From the roll each strip passes over a rod 15, 16 and 17, respectively, also held by the side walls of the case. The strip 3 passes over the rod 15, the strip 4 over the rod 16,' and the strip 5 over the rod 17. Spacing, guiding and tensioning plates 18 and 19 are mounted on the rods 16 and 17 the lplate 18 being of av the variations in tension in the upper strips act to create varationsin tension in the lower strips. For instance when increased tension is made on the strip 5, it tends to swing the freeedge of the plate 19. downward, thus to simultaneously increase the 'tension on the strips 3 and 4. From the rods 15, l'and 17, the strips pass in superposed relation over a writing ta let 20, which is hinged at 21 near the end remote from the plates 18 and 19 to the case, to swing into open or closed position.A
At one side of thev writing tablet means is provided to support a roll of strips 22 having transfer material on their under faces, and constituting transfer leaves to be interleaved between the strips 3-4-5. Beyond the writing tablet the feeding and registering mechanism is arranged. A cover 23 is provided for closing the top of the case, the
vcover having an opening 24 which exposes the greater portion of the tablet, and the cover is usually hinged to one of the case side walls in order that it may be opened to give access to the compartment 2. The cover constitutes a frame encircling the writing surface of the tablet and it clamps the ends of lthe transfer leaves remote from the trough.
In this embodiment of the invention I provlde a plurality of mechanisms for feeding, or advancing the superposed'strips, each of which is rendered ineffective by' engagement with an aperture. v
The advancing mechanismsare arranged to operate alternately, one being designed to advance the strips when the other is inoperative and each being designed to have its advancmg operation limited by control apertures in the web. When it is desired to feed a plurallty of similar forms successively, as in the present embodiment the apertures of the two series may be arranged alternately so that 'when one advancing vmechanism has been rendered inoperative by engagement with an aperture the other mechanism mayibe brought into operation by the lever 37.
It will be clear, however, that if it be desired to selectively advance different lengths, the control apertures of different series may be' accordingly differently spaced so that the utilization of one advancing mechanism will feed one length and the other will feed a different length, in such case it may`be desirable to supplyan auxiliary mechanism to start the feeding operation.
Moreover the feeding mechanism may be so arranged, and in the embodiment illustrated are so arranged, that they may both be brought simultaneously into operation whereby the feed mechanism will not be interruptedmechanism may advance the strips. Each of' the said mechanisms includes a , friction feed wheel 27 and 28, respectively, having a roughened periphery, and having a peripheral width such that it will penetrate the apertures of the strip. A common feed roller 29 cooperates with both wheels, the said roller having a roughened portion at the point where the wheels press the paper against the roller.
rlhe roller 29 is secured to a shaft 30 journaled in the side walls ofthe case alongside the feed roller 29, and provided at its outer end with a crank 31 for convenience in -ma nipulating the same. The wheels are mounted on an oscillatable shaft 32 which is journaledto oscillate in angular bearing arms 33 pivoted to the side walls ofthe case as indicated at 34. Resilient means, as the coil springs 35 are arranged between the arms and the case, and act normally to draw the shaft toward the common roller 29. The shaft has a fixed collar 36 at each end, engaging the inner side of the adjacent bearing arm, to limit the longitudinal movement of the shaft, and beyond that arm adjacent to the crank 31 the shaftis provided witha radial arm 37 by means of which the shaft may be manually oscillated, to bring'either wheel 27 or 28 into engaging position. The wheel 28 is loose on the shaft as shown, so as to rotate, and is limited in its movement away from the wheel 27, by means of a collar 38 adjustably connected to the shaft. The wheel 27 is journaled ,on4 a bushing 39, which is held to the shaft by a set screw 40, and the bushing has a marginal flange or rib 41 at the end remote from the wheel 28, to limit the movement of the wheel 27 away from the wheelv also lifts the wheel 28 away from the roller 29 thereby relieving the tractive effect of wheel 28. When the. shaft 32 is oscillated in the reverse direction, the wheel 27 recedes from the roller 29 whereby its tractive effect may be relieved, and permitting the spring 35 to depress the shaft 32 and bring the wheel 28 into cooperation withmoller 29 to establish tractive effect of wheel 28.
A shaft 44 is journaled in the case, parallel to the shaft 32, and this shaft has a radial lug 45' which engages one of the arms 33. At its opposite end, the shaft has a thumb piece 46 for oscillating the same. When the shaft is oscillated in one direction, the shaft 32 is lifted, so that both wheels 27 and 28 are in inoperative position. When with the superposed strips the shaft is oscillated in the opposite direction, the` springs press the wheel 27 or 28, which is in operative position, into'contact between the wheel and the roller.
The wheels 27 and 28 are located on shaft 32 at different points transversely of the direction of feed, and engage the superposed strips on different longitudinal lines, and each strip is provided with a plurality of series of feed control apertures,. one series in the line engaged by each wheel. The apertures of the two series are indicated at 47 and 48, respectively. The apertures 47 are in line with the wheel 27, while the apertures 48 are in line with the wheel 28. The advancing mechanisms are arranged so that either one may effect feeding independently of the other and thus the feed is determined by the character of the particular sets of apertures with which the selected advancing mechanism cooperates. variable feed may be obtained. Under such circumstances it is possible to vary the feed by selecting the advancing mechanisms. Ordinarily however it is preferred to make the apertures intervals by staggering those of one series relative to those of the other whereby either Aadvancing mechanism will feed until it reaches its contra aperture, whereupon the other mechanism-may be brought into engagement with the webs.
Each strip may if desired be provided with the filing apertures indicated at 49, the said `apertures being arranged at the opposite side edges of the strip. The apertures 49 maybe arranged in pairs, in alinement transversely of the strip. By the use of apertures for feed control which are separate from the filing apertures it will be evident that freedom shaft 32 in operative position,

The operation of this modification is as follows:
When strips of apertured paper have been supplied to the machine, the said strips are properly threaded, and the superposed strips are passed between the feeding wheels and the common roller in registry. The strips are so mounted, and are so guided, that the apertures 47 will engage in succession the wheel 27 and the rollerv29, and the apertures i 48 will engage in succession the wheel 28 and the roller 29, the apertures being of a size to permit the peripheries of the wheels to enter. ofthe two sets alternate at equal rotation of the crank will be ineffective to advance the strip. v When it is desired to again advance the strip, the shaft 32 is oscillated, to translatably move the wheel 28 into operative position, and the wheel 27 into inoperative position. 'lhe strips are now engaged by feed wheel 28, and they will be advanced until an aperture 48 registers With the wheel 28. Thus the Wheels act alternately to advance the strips, the feed continuity of the strip between successive apertures in each series being unbroken. In order to protect the feed wheels, a shield 50 is connected to the arms 33 above the shaft. While the feed wheels are shown as arranged above the roller 29, this is for convenience only, andthe said wheels might with equal advantage be arranged below the said roller. While vthe improved advancing mechanism is shown in connection with means for supplying strips from rolls, it is obvious that it would operate with equal facility on pads or books of any other convenientform, as for example interengaged reversely folded strips. The various strips furthermore may be arranged in separate pads or rolls, or may be iniirfolded or arranged in a common pad or ro In the modification illustrated in Figs. 9, 10 and 11 as will be seen from Fig. 11, one series of perforations is provided in each side of the strip, each series comprising successive perforations out of alignment, as the perforations 147 and 148, corresponding to the perforations 47 and 48 of the form first illustrated, and a set of feed wheels 127, 128 and rollers 129 are provided upon each side of the machine adapted each to cooperate with its corresponding series of perforations. The rollers 129 will both be mounted upon a common shaft 130 to be operated by a crank 131 in a manner analagous to that already described for Shafts 30 and arm 31, and the wheels 127 and 128 will be mounted eccentrically to each other upon a shaft 132, whereby either the rollers 127 or the rollers 128 may be caused to cooperate with rollers 129 by the movement of the handle 131.
In connection with this modification there is illustrated a slightly different manner ofr eccentrically mounting the rollers 127 and 128 in that each of these rollers is journaled upon au eccentric-139 fastened tothe shaft 132 by a pin 140. These eccentrics, however, have their eccentricities in different directions, whereby the rotation of the shaft 132 may be caused to bring one or the other roller into lactlon without altering the tension upon the feed mechanism due to the s ring 35. This is caused by the fact that if tlhe eccentrics be of equal eccentricity, axes of the shaft 132 will be in the same position no matter which roller be in operation. Consequently the tension on the spring will be the same.
With this modification, furthermore, the rollers l127' and 128 may be identical in construction, and the same eccentric and pin may be used for the two rollers, thev being merely placed with their eccentricities in opposite direction. Thus the number of different types of parts to be constructed in the making of the machine will be reduced to al minimum.
While this method of mounting thel feed rollers is illustrated in the second modification, it will be obvious that either form may be used in either type.
As illustrated, the two sets of feeding mechanism for the two sides on the machine are so arranged thatthe two left-hand rollers 128, come into action at the same time, and that the two right-hand rollers 127 also come into action at the same time. It is thus possible to arrange the web so that each individual sheet has the perforations spaced the same distance apart, sidewise of the web, as the other sheets, so that all of the sheets may The operation of the second form illustrated is substantially similar to that just described, excepting that by reason of the fact that identical feeding mechanism being used at the two sides of the web a greater` control over the web during feeding operation is secured, as the two sides of the web are simultaneously advanced.
Since certain changes may be made in the above construction and different embodiments of the invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawing shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Itis also to be understood that the following claims are intendedl to cover all of the generic and specific features of the invention erein described, and all statements of the s cope of theinvention which, as a matter of lan age, might be said to fall therebetween. aving described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent,is: 1. In a machine of the class described, in combination, a pluralityof means' adapted lindependently to advance a web havin apertures and adapted to be rendered ine ective tol advance said web b enga ement with an aperture, said means eing, aterally' spaced from each other, andmeans for rendering leach of said advancing means operative one alternately with the'other.
2. In a strip feeding device of the character described, in combination, a feed roller, two
feed wheels at different points transversely of the direction of feed adapted to cooperate with said roller to feed a strip, bearing surfaces eccentric to each other on which said wheels are rotatably mounted, one of said surfaces being manually oscillatable and eccentricto its axis of oscillation.
3. In a strip feeding device of the character centric to the axis of oscillation of said shaft,
one of said wheels being rotatably mounted on said surface.
5. In a strip feeding device of the character described, in combination, a feed roller, a manually oscillatable shaft alongside said roller, a pair of feed wheels supported by said shaft at different points transversely of the direction of feed, and a bushing oscillatable with said shaft having a bearing surface eccentric to the axis of oscillation of said shaft, one of said wheels being rotatably mounted on said surface, and resilient means for urging said wheels toward said roller.
6. In a strip feedin machine of the character described, in com ination, a feed roller,

8. A machine of the character described adapted for use with a strip having a plurality of sets of apertures, the apertures of each set being out of lateral and longitudinal alignment with those ofmthe other including,

A machine of the character described adapted for use with a strip having control apertures therein including, in combination, a plurality of independent feeding means for advancing said strip relative to a writing tablet, each rendered ineffective to feed the strip by engagement with an aperture, said feeding means being laterally spaced from each other and in alignment with said sets of apertures, whereby each feeding means connects a different set of apertures, and means for independently operating said strip-feeding means to effect strip advancement.
10. A machine of the character described adapted for use with a web having a plurality of laterally spaced sets of longitudinally spaced control characteristics, including, in combination a plurality of independent meansv for advancing said web relative to a writing tablet, each advancing means including means rendering it ineffective to effect web advancement by sald characteristics, whereby said advancing means is adapted to feed the web an amount determined by the characteristic of the web and independent of the other advancing means, and means for independently operating said strip-advancing means to effect strip advancement.
11. In a machine of the character described adapted for use with a web having apertures therein arranged in a plurality of longitudinally spaced sets including, in combination,
a plurality of independent means independently operable for feeding said web relative toa wrlting tablet and laterally spaced and in alignment with said sets of apertures and so placed relative thereto that one of said feeding means may be brought into operative e11- gagement wlth the webs when the other feeding means has been rendered inoperative by engagement with said aperture.
12. A strip feed and registering device adapted for use with a strip including lines of longitudinally spaced feed arresting strip registering apertures including, in combination,a pair of rotatable feed disks arranged to feed the strip and respectively aligned with the lines of apertures so as to have the feed arrested by engagement with the apertures, and supporting means supporting one of said disks in non-cooperative position to feed the strip at a time when the other disk is in position to cooperate to feed the strip and to have its feeding movement arrested by its engagement with an aperture.
13. A machine of the character describedadapted for use with a plurality of webs, each of said webs having feed COD'JIOl aPeFtUlGS including, in combination, a plurality ofA be rendered ineffective to advance by engage-r o ment with an aperture, and means for selectively actuating said feeding means whereby tht length of strip advance is determined selectively by the advancing means which is brought into operative position. y

A strip-feeding machine of the character described adapted vfor use with a record strip having two longitudinal series of feed control apertures including, in combination, a pair of friction wheels for feeding said strip, one in alignment with one series of apertures and the other in alignment with the other, saidV wheels being of a size to have their peripheries enter the said control apertures and means for establishing tractive effect of one of said wheels upon the strip alternately with the other.
15. A strip-feeding machine adapted for use with a record strip having two longitudinal series of feed control apertures, the apertures of one series being in'staggered relation to those of the other including. in combination, a feed roller and a pair of friction wheels each having a feeding grip with the roller to feed the strip, one in operative alignment with one series of apertures and the Vother in operative alignment with another series of said apertures, said wheels being of a size to enter the control apertures and means adapted to establish tractive effect of either one of said wheels on the strip whiley the feeding grip of the other is longitudinally aligned with a strip aperture.
16. A strip-feeding machine adapted for use with a record strip having two longitudinal series of feed control apertures, the apertures of one series being in staggered relation to those of the other including, in combination, a feed roller and a pair of friction wheels adapted to feed the strip, one in operative alignment with one series of apertures and 'the other inoperative alignment with vanother series of said apertures, said wheels being of a size to enter the control apertures and means for supporting said wheels for transverse movement relative to the face of the strip to position where either one cooperates with the strip to feed the strip and the other is simultaneously relieved of feeding effect.
` 17. A strip-feeding machine adapted for use with a record strip having two longitudinal series of feed control apertures, the apertures of one series being in staggered relation to those of the other including, in combination, a feed roller and a pair of friction wheels adapted to feed the strip, one friction wheel beingv positioned in operative alignment with one series of apertures and the other in operative alignment with another series Qf Seid. apertures, said Wheels being of a size to enter the cotrol apertures, and manually operable means totranslate said wheels to cause selective feed cooperation thereof with said roller.
18. A strip-feeding machine adapted for use with a record strip having two longitudinal series of feed control apertures, the apertures of o'ne series being in staggered relation to. those of the other including, in combina- 10 tion, a feed roller and a pair of friction wheels adapted to feed the strip, one in operative alignment with one series of apertures and the other in operative alignment with another of said apertures, said wheels being of 154 a Size to enter the control apertures, and manually operable means to translate said wheels including a device actuated in consequence of the pressure between said wheels and said roller and operatively connected to the other wheel to translate the last mentioned wheel from said roller. 19. In a device of the character described, in combination, a plurality of means for independently feeding a strip, means for setting said feeding means in 2:5 selectivel strip-feeding position and means whereby eachsaid feedingpmeans automatically checks strip/feed after a predetermined strip advancement thereof. 20. In a devieeef the character described, in combination, a lplurality of 'strip feeding disks mounted for movement into feeding or non-feeding positions, and connections interconnecting said disks whereby movement of one disk into operative position moves the other disk into inoperative position.
