My invention relates to an improvement in apparatus for applying refractory cement and more particularly to a so called gun for use in lining furnaces, ovens and the like.
As is well known, furnaces, ovens and the like are customarily provided with a lining of refractory material, which may be and in many instances is in the form of a refractory cement, which may be applied in a plastic' state and which heretofore has been usually applied manually, by means of a trowel.
The manual application 'of a cementitious lining to a furnace or oven requires a substantial amount of time and requires a degree of skill, since it is desirable that such .a lining be applied uniformly and smoothly. In order to avoid the time and expense incident to the manual application of cementitious linings, efforts have been made to provide apparatus for effecting the application under the influence, for example, of compressed yair. However, while more or less satisfactory apparatus has been devised, such has not found general use due to complication of design, high cost and a lack of capacity for handling the heavier and more viscous'refractory cements.
Now, it is the object of my invention to provide an apparatus, or so called gun, for the application of refractory cement to furnaces, ovens and the like, which will be of the simplest design, inexpensive to. produce and of a high degree of eiiiciency especially for handling heavy viscous cements. l
Having now indicated, in a general way, the nature and purpose of my invention, I will proceed to a detailed description thereof with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which there is illustrated a preferred embodiment and in which The figure is a side view, partly in section, of an apparatus, or gun, .embodying my invention.
The apparatus comprises a body a, within which is a chamber b and from which extends a handle c. Threaded through the rear lof the body and extending into the chamber b g is a nozzle d, therear of which communicates pressed air pipe f. The air pipe is connected to the body by means of the connector g and the flow of air through the pipe, from a suitable source of compressed air with which the pipe is connected, is controlled by a valve h.
The bottom of the body is provided with an opening communicating with chamber b and into which is threaded an end of a supply pipe z'. The supply pipe z' is cut away at its lower end, as indicated at y'. A vent pipe 7e, of smaller diameter than pipe i, one end of which extends through the wall of pipe z' at a point opposite to the upper end of the cut away portion y', extends for a distance parallel to the pipe z' and is secured thereto by a wrapping Z. As will be appreciated, if desired the pipe i may be iiexible without departing from my invention.
From lthe chamber a tapered passage m extends forwardly through the body a and communicates with a nozzle a, the base of which is threaded on the forward end Aof the casing. As will be observed, from an inspection of the drawing, the tapered passage m is smaller at its end adjacent the chamber b than at its end adjacent the nozzle n and it will be further noted: that- 'the passage through the nozzle is -cylindrical and of a diameter the same as that of the larger end of the passage m.
In the operation of the device embodying my invention, the nozzle cl is adjusted into chamber b with relation to the upper end of pipe z' so that on th'e discharge of air from the nozzle, cement of the consistency desired to be applied, will be drawn through pipe 'i into chamber b and discharged through passage m and nozzle n. The pipe z' is extended into a bodylof refractory cement to be applied, the upper Vend pipe la being at or above the surface of tie cement and compressed air is admitted to nozzle d by opening valve k.

Since the passage m isv tapered toward the chamber b, it acts as a mixing chamber into which the cement enters at a higher velocity than that at which it leaves and from which the cement is discharged into the cylindrical nozzle n through which it travels at a relatively constant velocity7 for discharge on the Wall of the furnace or oven to be lined. y
It will now be noted that the cement is, as it were, atomized in the tapered passage m, but on discharge from nozzle n, the passage through which is cylindrical, the cement will be homogeneous and will not have a tendency to spatter on striking the :furnace wall, being, as it were, laid thereon.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent is 1. Apparatus foriapplying plastic material comprising a head having therein a chamber, a discharge passage from said chamber increasing in area outwardly from the chamber, an inlet passage to the chamber for compressed air or vapor aligned with the discharge passage, and a second inlet passage to the chamber, a tube communicating with said second inlet passage, and an air conduit communicating at one end with the interior of the tube adj acent its intake end, the other end of said conduit being arranged to open to the atmosphere when the intake end of the tube is immersed in the plastic material, whereby compressed air or vapor admitted through the first inlet passage serves to pro# duce a flow of` plastic material and air through the tube into the chamber and to discharge the same therefrom through the dis charge passage.
2. Apparatus for applying plastic material comprising a head having therein a chamber, a discharge passage from said chamber increasing in area outwardly from the chamber, an inlet passage to thechamber for compressed air or vapor aligned with the discharge passage, andl a second inlet passage to the chamber, a nozzle having a cylindrical passage therethrough aligned with the discharge passage, a tube communicating with said second inlet passage, and an air conduit communicatin at one end with the interior 0f the tube ad] acent its intake end, the other end of said conduit being arranged to open to the atmosphere when the intake end of the tube is immersed in the plastic material, whereby compressed air or vapor admitted through the first inlet passage serves to produce a flow of plastic material andv air through the tube into the chamber and to dischargethe same therefrom through the discharge passage and the nozzle.-
