Patented Mar. 18, 1930 PATENT OFFICE ADOLF WODARRA, F BERLIN LANKwlTz, GERMANY DOOR LOCK Application filed December 24, 1926, Serial No. 156,916, and in Germany December 24, 1925.
means of a key or by means of a handle or 4 5 door knob. It has been proposed to providcin case of such check-locks a key-hole which is arranged in the axis of the doorhandle itself in order to save space and in order to be able to construct the lock in a very compact manner. I-Teretofore, however,
the key-hole had been arranged in such a manner that the axis of the bore for the keyshaft and the axis of rotation of the door knob were coincident with each other. The
path of motion of the keybit consequently was concentric to the axis of the door-handle. From this it follows that the tumblers of the lock must project into the range of action of the shaft of the door-handle, otherwise the key would have to be made exceedingly large. In consequence thereof a complete cam may not be used in connection with these locks, because it would be impossible to insert said cam into the lock after the tumblers have fallen into their lower position. Therefore, instead of a complete cam, either se'gmentally-formed members or complicated lever mechanisms heretofore have been used with the result that locks of the present general type have been of a less rugged construction than is often desired.
According to this invention a check-lock is provided which uses a cam mounted upon its entire circumference yet avoiding the aforementioned disadvantages by the fact that. the cam is penetrated by the key-hole and formed as a guiding member for the key-bit. The handle is mounted upon the front surfaces of the cam. The bore for the shaft of the key which bore passes through the cam is arranged eccentrically with respect to the axis of rotation of the cam so that the key-bit projects beyond the circular circumference of the'cam during the greater part of its motion. A double-armed intermediately pivoted lever is pivotally connected to an arm of the cam, and said lever is adapted for co-operation with a spring pressed talonpivoted to the bolt. This picoted talon is adapted to be held above the intermediately pivoted lever by the key-bit during locking and unlocking movement of the bolt.
The safety-device consists preferably of a cam-shaft which is adjustable from the inclined lug provided on the interior side of the door, av hand-lever of the safety device engaging said lug, said hand-lever serving for rocking said cam-shaft. This safetydevice will prevent unauthorized persons who have gained access to a room from leaving 0 the room by merely turning the door-knob or handle. 1
According to this invention the problem of locking the door as well-as of providing a security against unauthorized opening of 5 the door is solved by the manner in which the safety-device and the locking device are united in one and the same lock. In the doorlock according to this invention the conditions for opening and closing the lock or the locking of the door-lock are, therefore, dependent upon the position of the safety-device.
In the accompanying drawings two forms of construction are shown as an example of the device constructed according to this invention.
Figs. l-3 show one of said forms of construction of the door-lock according to this invention in a side-view with the front cover of the casing partly broken away. These three figures represent the door-lock in different positions of the safety-device.
Fig. 4 shows the arrangement of the doorknob or handle upon the lateral surface of the cam according to the first form of construction of this invention.
Figs. 5-9 show another form of construction of the novel door-lock and the way of fastening the door-knob or handle to the cam.
' through the cam 13.
Fig. 5 more particularly shows the lock in a 1ateral view in unlocked condition;
Fig. 6 more particularly is the same view of the lock in locked condition, In this case also the cover of the casing is partly removed in both Figures 5 and 6;
Fig. 7 is a section through the lock-bolt along the line 77 of Fig. 5;
Fig. 8 shows the cam together with the spring-latch in a front-view, and
Fig. 9 represents the second form of construction of the door-knob or handle and the way in which said door-knob or handle is fastened to the cam.
In a casing 1 having lateral cover-plates 2 which are shown broken away, there is slidably mounted in the usual manner a bolt 3. This bolt is cut away in the part which is positioned within the lock and in, proximity to the point of entrance into the bolt opening 4 of the face-plate 5 of the casing 1. A talon 7 is pivoted at 6, said talon being provided at its rearward end with a finger 8. This finger 8 co-operates. with a double-armed intermediate lever 9 pivoted at 50. This intermediate lever is provided at its free end with a slot 11, said slot serving as a guide for the pins which are provided at the end 12 of the swingable cam 10 of the cam. When depressing the door-handle as shown for instance at 15 in Fig. 4, the swingable cam-arm 10 will move against the action of the spring 16, the double-lever 9 participating in the motion of said cam 'arm. The key-hole 14 passes The talon 7, therefore, may be moved by I means of its finger 8 into or out of the range of action of the intermediate lever9. The talon may be provided with an oblique surface in proximity to its pivot point, said sur face coming into contact with the under edge of the window 4 when thebolt 3 is in locking position, whereby the talon 7 will be swung out of the range of action of said intermediate lever 9 against the action of the catch- Spring 17. v
.Bositioned below the bolt 3 adjacent the front of the lock is a safety-device which comprises a shaft 18 which carries in different planes a rounded-out cam 19 and a pointed cam 20. The rounded-out cam 19 serves for lifting the talon 7 for disengaging the hook 8 from lever 9, while the pointed cam 20 is designed to engage with the recesses or stops 21 during the locked position of the door-lock, said position being described further below. The cam-shaft is preferably made of rectangular cross-section at the places which project beyond the surface of the door. Upon, this rectangular part of the cam-shaft there is provided a small lever 22 which may berotated into,the several positions I, II and III. The usual tumblers 25 are jo'urnaled on a pivot 23 of a side-plate 24 of the casing 1 of the lock, said tumblers the bolt is provided, are shown. The bolt itself is projected by a bolt-spring 30.
In the position I the round cam will engage the oblique surface of the talon 7 thus swinging said talon out of the range of action of the intermediate lever 9. The bolt cannot, therefore,in this position of the safety-lever be retracted by the handle 15, because the intermediate lever 9 will swing past and below the finger 8 of the talon. From the outside, however, the bolt 3 may be retracted by means of a keywhich is capable of operating the tumblers 25, the bit of said key retracting in the usual manner the bolt by means of teeth 29.
The position I as above described is that position by which a security is provided against opening the door by merely depressing the handle 15 yet providing a possibility of opening the lock by the possessor of the 'key from the .outside of the door.
If the depression of the door-handle 15 is intended to exert an action upon the bolt 3, the talon 7 must be so constructed that it will be enabled to move into the range of action during its downward motion. This is accomplished by pressing the safety-lever 22 into thumb of the person opening the door simultaneously with the depression of said doorhandle .(Fig. 2).
In position II the cam 19 allows the talon 7 to be depressed so that during swinging of the cam-arm 10 the intermediate lever 9 will retract the bolt by means of its finger 8. The possibility of opening the look from the outside by means of the'key will also be'present in this case.- I v In Fig. 3 the safety-lever 22 is shown in position III. In this position it has been raised upon the upper surface of the abovementioned small ascent and has carried the camshaft 18 with it and brought into a position in which the pointed cam20 has fallen into one of the depressions 21 of the bolt in its forwardly moved position.
The position III represents the condition of the lock for the purpose of providing safety at night. In this case, the lock cannot be opened with the key fromthe outside nor from the inside of the door. Also the doorlatch 15 in this position will not be able to operate the bolt.
In Fig. 4 there is shown a mode of fastening the door handle on the' lock according, to the first form of construction of the latter. In this case the removal of the door-handle on the outside of the door for the purpose of unauthorized-opening of the lock will be rendered impracticable by the fact that the means which permit the release of the doorhandle are only accessible from the frontside of the door.
A cap 32 is placed upon a portion of the cam 13 which projects exteriorly of the lock 8, said cam being formed in two parts connected together by screws 31. The cap 32 is made integral with the door-handle 15 and is provided with a flange 33 at its under surface, a forklike member 35 having projecting parts as indicated at 34'may be slid over the flange 33: Movement of the plate member 35 is accomplished by means of a threaded spindle or screw 36 which threads through thefiange 38 of plate member 35 and which is accessible from the front-side of the door. The flange 38 passes through a slot 37 which is provided in the side plate of the lock. The door-handle and its cap, therefore, may only be removed from the look when the door is in open condition.
The tumblers 25 may be employed in different numbers and their form and construction varied as desired.
The second form of the door-lock according to this invention is more simple in its construction and has, therefore, certain advantages not had in the first form of construction.
A bolt 42 is slidably mounted upon a rivet ed lug 43 in the lock casing 41. The bolt 42 is constructed with a cross-section as shown in Fig. 7, in order'that the same may be reversed. A screw 48 serves for fastening a nose 47 upon the bolt. The latter is pressed in the usual manner by a spring 49. The
usual tumblers, as well as a talon 51, are' vided for the purpose of engaging the hook 55 with a lateral member 57 as shown in Fig. 8. The cam 58 is formed in the same manner as in the first form of construction above described, and .contains a key-hole 59. The
- cam 58 is kept under the action of a spring 60 and may be rotated by means of the doorhandle so that the latch-lever 56 will make a proper swinging motion and retract the bolt towards the right by engaging the hook 55 of the talon. For fastening the door-handle the cam is provided with segmental recesses 61 to receive projections on the handle andscrew-holes 62 are provided in the cam for the screws 63 employed for fastening the handle to the cam. The open head 67 of the doorhandle 65 carries on its under edge the catchmember 68.
The locking member in this form of construction is made as a locking cam which may be adjusted to assume the two positions as shown in Figs. 5 and 6. The talon 51 is provided with a recess to receive the lug -13, a lug 66. projecting into said recess at the top thereof and lugs 64 projecting into said recess at the bottom thereof for cooperation with said lug 43, the latter lug thus serving as a stop for the talon in different longitudinally and pivotally moved positions of the latter.-
The door-lock according to the second form of construction operates as follows:
Assuming that a door equipped with the lock has simply been closed Without having used the key for the forward motion of the bolt, the nose 47 of the bolt will engage the opening for the bolt which is provided withg in the post of the door. As shown in Fig. 5 the door-lock is in unlocked position with the locking member 54 disengaged from the pressure-surface 53 of the talon. -T he latter, however, rests with the upper edge of its recess upon the riveted lug '43, while the latchlever 56 by means of its extension 57 is engaged with the book 55 of the talon. If new the door-handle, (i5 is depressed and the shank rotated towards the right, the latch-lever 56 will swing towards the right and carry the talon 51 and bolt 42 with it. The nose 47 of the bolt will thereby be retracted from the bolt-hole in the door-post and the door may now immediately be opened.
According to Fig. 6 the door may not be opened from the outside on account of the fact that the locking-cam 54 has lifted the talon 51 by means of its pressure-surface 53. The hook 55 of the talon will, therefore, be positioned outside of the range of the latchlever 56 so that any depressing of the latch will cause no effective change of the parts. The talon and hook 55 will fall back into the original position so that the hook will enter into the range of action of the latch lever 56 but not until the lockingcam 54 has been moved back into the position according to Fig. 5 from the outside of the door.
The lock when in the position shown in Fig. 6 cannot be opened with the key, because the tooth 64 of the talon 5 1 in the lifted position of the latter will contact with the riveted lug 43. The lock, therefore, by reason of the position of the locking-cam 54 will be locked against any depression of the door- Eandle as well as against the rotation of the loo The same conditions as shown in Figs. 5 I
and 6 are present if the bolt is moved forward by a single rotation of the key, the only 7 difference being that,,in this case the tooth 66 of the talon will be positioned at the righthand side of the riveted lug 43. In this position the hook 55 of the talon will be moved forward towards the left, so that a pressure which is exerted upon the door-handle will be without any eifect.
In the locked condition shown in Fig. 6 the tooth 64 would be positioned in front of the riveted lug 43 if the bolt be moved forward by a single rotation of the key; in the same manner as above described the tooth 66 of the talon will be lifted above the riveted lug 43 and the hook 55 will similarly be lifted above the latch-lever 56 as soon as the key-bit moves along the pressure-surface 52 of the talon 51.
In order to provide a safety because the door of a room may not be locked from the inside the locking member may also be rebe taken out of the lock, the bit of said key acting ,upon the tumbler mechanism 53 of the talon 51.
I claim 4 1 A door-lock including a cam having a keyhole extending therethrough, said cam being adapted as a guiding member for the keybit, and having a key-shield upon the frontsurface of said cam, the bore of the keyhole for the shaft of the key being mounted eecentrically with respect to the axis of said cam, and a safety device including a cam-" shaft adjustable from the inside of the lock,
a bolt and spring pressed talon thereon, said cam-shaft having cams adapted to move'the sprin pressed talon on the bolt.
2. door-lock including a cam havin keyhole extending therethrough, said cam ing adapted as a guiding member for the key-bit, and having'a key-shield upon the front-surface of sald cam, the bore of'the placed by a special locking-key which may keyhole for the shaft of the key being" mounted eccentrically with respect to the axis of said cam, a latch lever formed integrally on the cam, a bolt having a talon cooperating with said latch lever adapted to make said bolt operable or inoperable as desired.
3. A door-lock including a cam having a keyhole extending therethrough, said cam, bemgadapted as a guiding member for thekey.- t, and having a key-shield upon the front-surface of said cam, the bore of the A keyhole for the shaft of the key being disposed eccentrically with respect to the axis of said cam, a latch lever formed integrally on the cam, a lock bolt, a talon adapted to act as a locking means for said lock-bolt, a looking member, said talon being formed as a double tumbler mechanism which may be moved both by a key and by said locking member. In testimony whereof I have aflixedmy signature.
