. FUEL SAVING DEVICE Filed July so, 1928 2 Sheets-Sheet 1 Patented Mar. 18, 1930 WILLI AM E. ROTHERMEL, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOI$ FUEL-SAVING DEVICE Application filed July so, 1928. Serial in). 296,174.
This invention relates, to improvements in fuel saving devices, and more especially to such a device adapted for attachment to a furnace, heater, stove, boiler, or the like.
One of the features of my invention is the provision of a mechanism or contrivance adapted to be fastened to the inside of the feed door so that air entering through openings in the door will pass through the device and also around it in contact with its outer Walls, thus becoming preheated so that as it comes in contact and mixes with the gases of the fuel bed combustion will be promoted, such mixing of preheated air with the gases of the fuel bed also reduces the smoke and lessens soot. The increased efiiciency in combustion produced by my device naturally results in fuel economy.
My device also operates to insulate the feed 29 door, or other parts of the wall of the combustion chamber, where the device is used, to
prevent loss of heat.
Other features and advantages of my invention will appear more fully as I proceed with my specification.
In that form of device embodying the features of my invention shown in the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in front elevation of a feed door; Fig. 2 is a rear view 39 of the same showing my fuel saving device attached; Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2
showing the vertical section of the device;
Fig. 4 is a View taken as indicated by the line 4 of Fig. 3; and Fig. 5 is a view taken as in- 35 dicated by the line 5 of Fig. 3.
As shown in the drawings, 10 indicates, in general, any furnace, stove, boiler, heater, or
the like, and 11 the feed door for the fuel 7 feed passage in one wall thereof. 12 indicates the butterfly valve air regulator or damper attached to the feed door to regulate the amount of air entering the combustion chamber above the fuel bed.
My improved fuel saving device comprises a substantially rectangular chamber 13 adapted for attachment at the inside of the door in any suitable manner. The chamber 13 is preferably spaced inwardly from the door a short distance to leave the space 14.
It may be supported in any suitable manner;
5. The outer or front face of the chamber 13 is indicated by 13 and the inner or rear face is indicated by 13. The front face 13 is provided with a centrally arranged opening 17 for the admission of air into the device. Inside of the chamber 13 are arranged baflieplates 18 around the central opening 17 so that air enter to the outlet of the rear or ing said openings must follow a tortuous passage through the chamber13 openings 19 in the loweredge inner face 13. Passage of air through the device is indicated by the arrows. The outlet openings 19 need not necessarily be in the lowe r edge of the face 13. For example, if the level of the fire bed is relatively high these openings may be located. correspondingly h placed anywh igher. In fact, they may be ere in the inner face, thoughof course it would not be advisable to place them in that p ortion of the face directly opposite the opening 17 as little or no baffling effect would the n be obtained.
It is to be particularly noted that the chamber 13 is spaced inwardly a' short distance from the feed 14 between.
door 11 so as to leave the space Consequently, some of the air entering through the feed door will not pass into the openi wardly aroun ber 13 and in by the arrows, the outer wal preheated.
entire chambe ng 17, but will be deflected outd the outer walls of the chamcontact therewith, as indicated such air coming in contact with ls of the chamber will also be t is to' be understood that the r is heated both by radiant and sensible heat from the combustion in the combustion chamber, and consequently air passing through the chamber around the battles 18 will also through the o chamber.
be preheated before escaping penings 19 into the combustion The chamber 13 having a double wall and lying inside of the feed door acts as an insulator for the feed door, thus conserving the heat in the combustion chamber. Acting as such insulator for the feed door, the usual feed door insulator lining to protect the same from heat may be dispensed with. p
It is -to'be noted that the chamber .13Lis readily removable from the feed door by tuous passage to be followed by the air in its lifting the ends 15 of the bars 15 out of the sockets 16. The device'may, vtherefore,-be readily removed for cleaning, repairing or replacement.
While I have shown and described certain 7 embodiments of my invention, it is to-b e" understood that it iscapable of many-.modifi'cations: Changes, therefore, in the construction and arrangement may be made without'departi-ng from the spirit and scope ofthe invention as disclosed in the appended claim, in which'it is my invention to claim all noveltyinherent in my invention as broadly'as'possibleiinview ofthe prior art.
WhatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
In combination with a fuel-feed passage of'af'urnaceior'the like and a door therefor 'provided' with a damper, an air-heating cas- V 1ng, ba'r' means connectlng'the door and casingiandnormallydisposing the latter in said passage-inspaced relation to the door and to thewalls oftlie passage, said casing having its'marginal wall inwardly tapering and also having a centrally-arranged air inlet opening facing said-door, whereby the airpassing the.
damper will partly pass around said marginal wall. and wi'll partly enter said opening, and the casing adjacent its'inner lowericornerhaving, air outlet openings, and
bafiie means in said casing providing a tor-.
travel fromsaid inlet means to said outlet means. 7 v
