Our invention relates to web printing presses of the type shown in Cox Patents No.
988,548, of April 4, 1911; No. 1,457,501, of June 5, 1923; and No. 1,475,566, of November 27, 1923, in which the web is printed by means of traveling impression cylinders from printing surfaces resting upon stationary beds, the impression'cylinders being on impression durlng their printing stroke, and off -1mpress1ondur1ng then .return stroke,
- so as not to contact the printing surfaces,
during which return stroke the web of paper is fed forward between the beds and cylinders.
The present invention relates to the inking mechanism. and specifically to the means for intermittently partially rotating the ink fountain rolls from which ink is supplied to the distributing and'form rollers.
While the invention is primarily designed for use in a web perfecting press, it is applicableto single acting presses; and to other types of presses in which traveling cylinders and inking means are employed.
. We will explain the invention with reference to theaccompanying drawings which illustrate so much of a web perfecting press of the type referred to as will enable the invention to be clearly understood; and summarize in the claims the novel constructions and combinations of parts for which protection is desired.

The press diagrammatically shown in the drawings has parallel type beds 1, 1 arranged one over the other in a suitable main frame. Cooperating with bed 1 is a. travelingimpression cylinder 2, and cooperating with bed 1 is a traveling impression cyllnder 2 Said cylinders are mounted in crossheads 3' which are guided in suitableways in the sides of the press frame, and are reciprocated longitudinally of the frame preferably by means of pitmen 3* connecting the crossheads 8 with crank wheels 4:; which may be rotated by any suitable means to cause the cylinders 2 and 2 to travel back and forth over the beds.
In the type of press shown means are provided whereby the cylinders are on impression during one stroke and off impression during their returnstroke. The general construction and arrangement of such presses and of all the aforesaid parts are well known and need no further detailed explanation herein. For further explanation of the construction and operation of such a press ref: erence may be had to the aforesaid Cox Patent No. 1,457,501. The invention in the present case relates more particularly to the means for operating the fountain rolls.
'As indicated in said patent the crossheads carry form inking rollers 5, ink distributing rollers 5 cooperating therewith and ductor rollers 5". The said rollers may be arranged in any preferred manner, their arrangement not constituting any part of the present invention. The ductor rollers willcontact with fountain rollers 6 in ink fountain 6 (which are mounted on the arm adjacent the outer ends of the beds,) and each time the cross Y return stroke of the crossheads.
It is desirable to partly rotate each fountain roll G each time it is contacted by a ductor roller 5'. For this purpose each formtain. roll has been provided with a ratchet. 6' adapted to be engaged by a pawl 7 attached to an arm 7 pivoted on the shaft of the fountain roll, or in axial alinement therewith. The arms 7 of the upper and lower fountains have usually been connected by a link 7 and a'cam has heretofore been attached to the crossheads and so arranged that when the crossheads near the outer limit of their stroke the cam imparts a quick movement to the bar 7 c and causes it to quickly shift the'levers 7 and the fountain rolls. In a printing press having a traveling cylinder, reciprocating crossheads for moving the cylinder, a system of inking rollers carried by the crossheads adjacent the cylinder, an ink fountain located adjacent one limit of movement of the crossheads having a roll adapted to supply ink to the movable system of rollers, a lever and ratchet for rotating the fountain roll, a pivoted lever extending along and below the path of movement of the crossheads and having a long arm and a short arm, a roller adjustably attached to the crosshead and engaging the long arm of the pivoted lever, as the crosshead is reciprocated, a link connecting the short arm of the said lever with the fountain roll actuating device, and spring means for raising the lever after it is depressed.
