UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE JOHN i1. HoB'soN, OF NEWCASTLE, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN BAND-SAW STAVE-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 175,093, dated March 21, 1876; application filed December 16, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN H. HOBSON, of Newcastle, in the county of Henry and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Band-Saw Stave-Machine; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others'skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon,-'Which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to band-saw stavemachines; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of the devices for holding and operating the stave-block, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the annexed drawing, Figure 1 is a front elevation. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on line w 00. Fig. 3 is a vertical section on line y y. Fig. 4 is a portion of a plan view of my invention.
A represents the bed of the machine, upon which are suitable bearings for the two shafts a at, having the wheels B B secured to them,
' around which the baud-saw G is placed; Be-
tween the wheels B Bfnnder the upper part of the endless band-saw, are two standards or supports, E E, which have at their upper ends curved slides D D. In these slides is placed a carriage, G, which is moved toand from the saw by means of a lever, H. On the inner side of each standard A is secured a rest or support, I, upon which the stave-block is to be placed, said supports to be movable up and down for any thickness of staves. On the carriage G are two heads, J and J, for clamping the stave-block. The head J is stationary on the carriage, while the head J is made movable, for tightening the stave-block, and is operated by a lever, K, and spring b, as shown. Both heads are slotted at d, for the saw to pass through as the carriage is moved toward the saw. A part of each head then passes under the saw, and these parts are provided Wit-h oifsets at cc, to allow the staves to pass easily from the carriage or head-block when sawed olf from the stave-block, and also for clamping the last stave to finish its convex sides.
The operation of the machine is easily understood without further explanation.
This machine gives the staves their convex and concave surfaces by means of the curved slides. 7,
Having thus fully described this invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a band-saw stave-machine, the curved slides D D, in which the carriage or headblock G moves to and from the saw, for the purposes herein set forth.
2. The heads J J, provided with slots at and offsets a, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
3. The adjustable rests I, in combination with the curved slides D, head-block G, and heads J J, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own invention I alfix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN H. HOBSON. Witnesses:
A. N. KISSEL, M. M. BENTON.
