The catch A'is provided with a holdingnotch, a, in which the finger-beam is held when folded nptoward or against the frame or tongue, and witha' toe, b, to be acted upon by the drivers foot. The catch is mounted on a bracket, 0, secured upon the frame or tongue of the machine,or the bracket may form part of the frame or tongue, and vibrates on a pivot-pin, 0. A spring, 6, in a recess in the bracket bears against a lip or flange on the catch, which projects into the recess, (see.

To release the catch,: the 1 driver presses on the toe b with his .footyaud' thus retracts the catch. He may producejthe samev result by-pressing; with his foot on .the lever 1),.or work it by hand.
By connecting thelink d to the catch ab'ove .instead of below the fulcrum, it is obviousthat "the actionof the lever would be reversed that is, that it would then have to .be'drawn backward instead of being shoved forward.
This device obviously possesses great advantages over the spring-catches heretofore used, with no means of retracting the catch except to 'take hold of it directly by the fingers of the operator, as by myinvention the operator, in his seat on the machine, is enabled to release the finger-beam fromthe catch by either foot, or by both feet, by his hand alone, or by both hand and foot together.

. 2. The combination of the bracket, the spring-catch adapted to operate directly upon the finger-beam, and the lever pivoted on the bracket, these members being constructed and operating substantially as set forth. 7
