LOCK AND KEY STRUCTURE Filed July 8, 1926 2 Sheets-Sheet 2- Patented Mar. 11, 1930 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE FELIX PUGEK, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-THIRD TO FRANK DIBLICK AND ONE-THIRD TO JOHN FORMAN, BOTH OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS LOCK AND KEY STRUCTURE Application filed July 8, 1926.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in look structures and key for operating the same and has for one of its objects to provide a lock embodying the usual tensioned sliding latch and a pair of sliding lock bolts with a special type of key for independently shifting the lock bolts to their projected and retracted positions.
A further object of the invention is to provide a novel type of key for operating a sliding lock bolt wherein the lock casing housing the bolt is provided with a key receiving opening of a type embodying a central circular portion to receive a key shank with oppositely directed slots for a key ward, the escutcheon late on the frame carrying the lock structure eing provided only with a circular opening aligned with the key hole slots in the lock casing to prevent the insertion of a key into the lock casing other than the one especially designed therefor.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a novel type of key for operating a lock of the above type wherein a key spindle has a ward pivotally supported at the lock entering end of the key with a device at the handle end of the key for operating the ward after the key has been inserted into the lock to dispose the ward laterally of the key spindle or shank for engagement with the desired part of the lock mechanism.
With the above and other general objects in view which will become apparent as the nature of the invention is better understood, the invention consists in the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and claimed.

The lock structure disclosed herein comprises a casing having a body portion composed of a front wall 1, side wall 2, rear, top
. and bottom walls 3 and a removable side wall 4 that is secured in position by the screw 5 entering the socketed block 6 as shown in Figs. 4 and 5. The lock casing is set into the edge of the door 7 as shown in Figure 1 and is provided with a spindle bearing 8 having a rectangular bore 9 for the knob spindle 10 which carries a knob 11 upon each end thereof. The spindle bearing 8 is journaled at its opposite ends in the side walls 2 and 4 of the lock casing.
As shown in Fig. 4, the lock casing encloses a sliding latch bolt 12 of the usual type that is forwardly spring pressed by the spring 13 with the rear bifurcated ends thereof having the legs 14 straddling the spindle bearing 8. Arms 15 carried by the spindle bearing 8 engage the lugs 16 upon the inner free ends of the latch bolt legs 14 so that upon rotation of the knob spindle 10 in either direction, the arms 15 engaging the lugs 16 retract the latch bolt 12 against the tension of the spring 13.
The lock casing encloses a pair of sliding lock bolts of identical construction, each lock bolt 17 being guided in its sliding movements adjacent its forward ends by the guide blocks 18 carried by the side wall 2 of the lock casing. One face of the inner end of the lock bolt 17 is cut away as at 19 to provide a clearance space for mounting the latch plate that is pivotally supported as at 21 upon the side wall 2 of the casing at one side of the lock bolt. The latch plate 20 is spring pressed in one direction by the leaf spring 22 and pivotal movementof the latch plate in said spring pressed direction is limited by the lug 23 carried by the latch plate engaging the adjacent edge of the lock bolt. The lock bolt 17 is engaged by the lug 24 carried by the side wall 2 .of the casing to counteract the action of the spring 22 and to hold the lock bolt in direct alignment with the bolt opening in the front or door edge wall 1 of the casing. Inward sliding movement of the lock bolt 17 is permit-ted by the lug 25 carried by the bottom wall of the casing and said bolt is provided 'with a vertical lug or extension 26 intermediate its ends to engage the lug 25 to limit such inward movement. Then the lock bolt 17 is in the retracted positionshown in Fig. 4, the extension 26 carried thereby is disposed between the lugs 23 and 25 to hold the bolt locked against sliding movement. IVhen it Y is desired to project the lock bolt 17, a key is inserted into the casing and engages the latch plate 20 at the V-shaped cut away portion 27 in the edge of the bolt 17opposite the extension 26 to vertically displace the latchvplate and move the lug 23 carried thereby outof the path of'movement ot' the extension 26 carried bythe lock bolt and at which time the ward of the key engaging a wall of the V-shaped cut away portion of the boltwill slide the bolt in the desired direction upon continued turning of the key.
shank is bifurcated to provide side arms 34. i A ward is pivotally mountedat one end as at 36 between the side arms 34' and has a device associated therewith for causing the ward either to assume a position at right angles to "the longitudial axis of the key shank 31 as illustrated in Fig. 2, or to be alignedwith the key-shank and disposed between the side arms 34. The operating device for theward 35 inc-l'u-desa rod 37 extending through the tubular key shank 31 and having a pivotal connection 38 with the inner pivoted end of the ward 35 while the opposite end of the rod '37 is providedwith a coarse screw thread 39 upon which a nut40 is mounted with the opposite ends of the'nut bearing against the bearing faces=33 of'the key handle 32. The screw threads 39 upon the rod 31 are of a pitch whereby when the nut 41 is rotated for a sin gle revolution, the ward 35 will be either fully projected to an angular position or retracted between the side arms 34.
In positioning the key in the lock for operating either of the bolts 17, the ward 35 is shifted by the rod 37 upon operating the nut 40 to position the same in alignment with the key shank between the arms 34 and at which time the key is fitted through the circular opening 29 in the escutcheon plate to enter the slotted opening 42 in either of the walls 4 or 2 of the lock casing. \Vhen the key is so disposed, the nut 40 is operated and by a single turn thereof the ward 3.5 is shifted to a position at right angles to theilongitudinal axisof the key shank and in position to engage either of the latch plates 20 for laterally displacing the same to position the lug 23 out of the path of movementof the side extension 26 upon the lock bolt and'upon rotation of the key, the ward engaging either or" the inclined surfaces 27 of the V-shaped cut away portion in the side of the lock bolt will shift thelock bolt in either direction, forward projecting movement of the lock bolt being limited-by the finger 43 upon the lock boltengaging the lug 24 uponthe wall 20f the lock casing. \Vhen the key ward is displaced upon the latch plate 20, the spring 22 laterally shifts the latch plate to position the lug 23 at either side of the extension 26 for holding the latch bolt in either its projected or retracted position.
IVhile there is herein shown and described the preferred embodiment of the present invention, itis, nevertheless, to:be understood that minor changes'maybemade therein without departing fromthe spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention, I claim A look comprising a casinghaving a key opening and provided at one side of said opening with spaced lugs,-said lugs being located one at one side of the point midway between the ends of the key opening and the other at the opposite side of said-point, a bolt slidably mounted between said lugs and having at its edge-anextension, said bolt having one side portion cutawayforming a recess, a latch plate pivoted to the bolt at a point within said recess and having at its edge a lug disposed transversely across the .boltgandlocated at a point between the pivot of the .bolt and one of the-first-mentioned lugs carried by the casing, and the bolt having at its edge adjacent the keyopening a cut away recess provided with inclined side edges.
