IMPROVEMENT IN TYPE-WRITERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 175,051, dated March 21, 1876; application filed October 2, 1875.
sponding parts.
My invention relates to such an improvement in the type-writers lately introduced into use that the same may be made available for verbatim reports by a simple additional attachment, which may be used or not, according as the type-writer is employed for common or stenotypic work.
The invention consists of a separate marking-lever, that prints outside of the printingpoint of the common type-levers, and is operated by an adjustable button attached to the space key or bar.
In the drawing, A represents the keys of a .Sholes & Giddings or other type-writer, and
B the type-levers of the same, which are all arranged to mark at one and the same printing-point. v
An extra key, 0, and type-lever, C, is arranged in the same manner as the other keys, but the lever-arm O is made somewhat shorter than the common type-levers, for the purpose of having a printing point separate from that of the other type-levers. This key and lever is to be used for marking or dividing words when the type writer is employed for verbatim reporting, and may therefore be called a divider or marker.
The key 0 has to be worked simultaneously with the key representing the initial letter of the word, to produce the mark above or below the letter.
The extra type-lever or marker 0 is made shorter than the other type-levers, so that it shall reach outside of the type center at which all the other type act, by which construction it is a stenotypic marker, making its mark above or below the type-line. The marker does not collide with the adjacent type because it does not reach to the type-center at which all the other type act.
For working this marker with greater convenience a swinging button, D, is applied by a screw-bolt and nut, E, to the space bar or key F, the button being readily swung over the marker-key and adjusted so that a greater or lesser sweep of the marker-lever is obtained.
When the button is placed on the markerkey the initial letter may be readily determined by depressing the space-key simultaneously with the corresponding key of the letter, which double working may be acquired with little diificulty.
When the button is turned over the spacekey the marker-key is like an ordinary key, and may be worked in the same manner, when it is desired, in common writing, to indicate a capital, or giving special emphasis to certain letters. As soon as the marker is joined to the space key it may be worked by the palm of the hand simultaneously with the striking of the initial-key, and thereby verbatim reports made in stenotypic manner by means o the simple and inexpensive marker attachment.
Having thusdescribed my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patcut-- 1. The combination, with the type-levers of an ordinary type-writer, of an independent marking arm or lever, having a printing-point separate from that of the common type levers, and made shorter than the latter substantially as and for the purpose set for 2. The combination of the marking or dividingkey, by a swinging adjustable button, with the space-key, for being conveniently used by the same, substantially in the manner set forth.
