IMPROVEMENT IN MOP-WRINGERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 175,041, dated March 21, 1876; application filed January 22, 1876.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HEMAN D. CROOKER, of Linesville, in the county of Crawford and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Mop-Wringers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.

Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a perspective View of my mop-wringer, and Figs. 2, 3, and 4: are detail views thereof.

This invention has relation to improvements in mop-wringers; and it consists in the arrangement and novel construction of the various devices employed, whereby the said wringer is secured to the tub, as will be hereinafter more fully explained.

In the annexed drawings the letterA designates my improved wringer, which is composed .of two strips of metal, a a, which, starting from a common stem, 1), as shown in Fig. 1, are bent in spirals, and are finally united at their converging lower ends to a metallic plate, 6, which is bolted to an angular metallic shank, B, the tang d of which is in crosssection half-round, being flat on one side and convex on the other, and in plan tapers slightly. Tang d is designed to be passed into a correspondingly-shaped eye, 6, on a bolt, 0, which passes through metallic plates ff, respectively on the inside and outside of the stave of a pail, D. Plate f, on the outside, is simply a metallic disk, which is secured into position upon the stave by means of screws,

but plate f is provided with raised flanges 73, between which tang d will be received when it is passed into 6 on bolt 0. The shank being tapered, will only penetrate a certain distance through the eye in the bolt G, and being engaged between flanges i on plate f, will be held against any rotation which would throw the wringer into a position unfavorable to being satisfactorily operated. Bolt G, before alluded to, will be screw-threaded upon its end projecting through the stave, and a thumb-nut, F, will be applied thereon, which, being forcibly set up, will clamp the tang of shank B forcibly against the inner plate f, thereby confining the wringer to its position, and eflectually preventing casual detachment.

When a swab or mop is passed into the wringer device, it will be jammed by the screwlike formation of the strips or a. into the lower part of the coils, where, by continuing the twisting of the mop or swab handle, every particle of superfluous moisture may be expressed Without the necessity of using the hand for the purpose.

The upper part of the spiral wringer being open, the swab or mop, whatever be its length, may be introduced sidewise into the same, and successive parts thereof may be cleared of moisture by repeating the process from above downward. When, as is usually the case, the spiral strips are attached at their upper ends to a ring, the mop can only be of such a size as may be received into the species of frame .thus formed, and no larger, but by my improved construction successive parts of the mop or. swab may be wrung, and this without using the hand.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In combination with the plate f, having raised lateral flanges t, the eye-bolt G, annular shank B of wringer A, and a clamp-nut, F, substantially as specified.
