IMPROVEMENT IN HORSE-POWERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 175,021, dated March 21, 1876; application filed February 25, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, N. B. BROWN, of Antwerp, in the county of Jefferson and in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Horse- Power; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction of a frame for a horse-power and the arrangement of the gearing therewith, in the manner hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a front elevation Fig. 2, a plan view, and Fig. 3 a perspective of my invention, so far as relates to the frame.
In the figures, Arepresents a metallic frame, cast in one piece, and to which the gearing of the power is connected. This frame rests upon a suitable base, consisting of the sills G G. The frame consists of the longitudinal ribs .a a, the wings B B, through which it is bolted to the frame, the posts D I) and their shafts J and H, the ribs 0 O and F, and the bearingblocks E E. These parts'are all cast in one piece, and constitute the frame, so that when the gearing is secured upon it the several wheels and shafts will always have their relative positions preserved rigidly. The master-wheel I rests upon the post D and revolves around the shaft H. The wheels K and L are cast together, and J represents their shaft, the wheel L, resting upon the shoulder of the post D. This wheel L is a bevel-gear wheel, and works into a wheel or pinion M upon the driving-shaft E. The shaft E lies in a horizontal position and has its bearings in the blocks E E. The shaft, of course, has suitable caps above it to keep it in place and form one portion of the journalbox. The sweep m is secured upon the upper side of the gear-wheel I. The wheel I, as will be seen, gears in with the wheel K and drives the power. 7
Having thus fully described my invention, what 1 claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The metal frame A, consisting of the longitudinal ribs a a, lateral wings B B, posts 1.) D, with shafts J H, the ribs 0 O and F, and the bearing-blocks E E, all cast in one piece, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. In combination with the frame A, having journals and journal-hearings cast upon it, the wheels I, K, and L, and the shaft E with its pinion M, as and for the purpose'specified.
