This invention relates to the art of bending metallic articles, and is especially concerned with the construction of new and improved apparatus 1for bending elongated metallic articles, particularly pipe, which may be constructed at relatively low expense and which is simple and easy to operate and is, to a certain extent, automatic in operation.
A chief object is to provide an apparatus which will bend light gauge tubing without substantial reduction in` area, formation of wrinkles .or vother marks of objectionable character.
A further object is to provideapparatus for bending a .metallic article, particularly a tube,'into a plurality of planes.y
. Other objects will appear and be pointed out hereinafter. ,y
In the drawings attachedto and forming a part of this application- Fig. 1 is a top plan view of one form of y apparatus embodying my invention;

A bending roll 'shaft' -6 extends in an upright position through the pedestal 3 and 1s supported on the top of the bed 4by an outstanding annular flange 7 which rests upon a suitably `worm gear 2 is a front sideelevation of the ap:y
'e roller C is securedto roll A as yshown in wardly to small imensionsflanged bushing8, the lower end of the shaft 6 being provided with a suitable bushing 9 supported in a bearing socket 10 carriedV by the base 1. This socket 10 may conveniently be carried by a cross wall 11 of the housing 1 and provides a bearing face to`suppo1t a ring gear 12 keyed to the shaft 6. This gear 12 .meshes with a worm gear 13 rotatably mounted in the offset rojection 2 of the housing 1. A drive sha 15 is keyed to the 13 and communicates with two oppositely driven drive pulleys 16 and 17 which normally rotate relative to the shaft 15 but which may be engaged to drive the latter by means of a clutch 18 actuated by a clutch lever 19 and a clutch shaft 20. The actuation of the shaft 20 will presently be described in more detail.
The bending roll shaft 6 carries near its upper end a collar' 21 clamped about a collar on the shaft 6 so as to rotate therewith. This collar-21 is slit circumferentially as at 22 and twov similardogs 23a and 23h areadjustably ysecured in the slit 22 so as to en age with a lever 24 presently to be describe 70 A suitable vbending roll A is keyed to the shaft 6 above the collar21 and is of such size asv to cooperate with follower shoe B which is backed by a keeper roll 25 rotatably mounted on a carriage or bracket 26 which bracket is mounted to slide between guides 27 on the top of the'bed 4 towardand away from the shaft 6' and its bending roll.
Fig. 5 in position to clamp a tube or article to be bent to the roll when shoe B is brought `to its operating position by roll ,25. The tube or other article is 'first 'inserted between roll' 4 A and roller C, then shoe B is laced between the article and roll 25` en roll 25 is. moved 'toward roll A, the .article is 4secured to roll A so as to rotate withit. A pair of eye-bolts 28 and a turnbuckle Y29 serve to connect the bracket 26 with a crank arm 30 keyed lto a shaft 31 which extends down through 9 the bed 4. The shaft 31 carries at its lower opposite to the end where the pipe 48 enters,
end a crank arm 32. A connecting rod 33 is fastened at one end to the crank arm 32 and at the other end to a piston 34 reciprocably mounted in a cylinder 35 carried on the underside of the bed 4.
Means for actuating the roll 25 to its normal position is shown in the spring 36 while means for actuating it in the opposite direction comprises Huid pressure means conducted to the cylinder 35 through pipe 37 and a valve 38. Valve 38 is carried by the bed 4 and as shown comprises a cylinder within which is slidably mounted a circular valve piston 39 connected to a rod 40 which eX- tends out through the end of the valve cylinder 38 and is connected to a hand lever 40.
yAn intake pipe 41 brings fluid under pressure, for example compressed air, into the cylinder 38 where, when the piston 39 is properly positioned, it may pass through annular grooves in the cylinder liner 42, thence into a recess 43 on the piston and out through the pipe 37 into the cylinder35. When the piston 39 is moved so that the piston closes the inlet opening and connects the opening from pipe 37 with the outlet 37', the pressure in the cylinder 35 is relieved and the spring 36 is capable of retracting the bracket 26 to the position shown in Fig. 1. It will be understood that the movement of the piston 34 results in a movement of the bracket 26 and the rotatably carried roll 25 toward the shaft 6 and any bending roll carried thereon.
A second cylinder 44, similar in substantially all respects to cylinder 38, may also be carried on the side of the bed 4 in a position similar to and closely adjacent to the cylinder 38. This cylinder is constructed with a sleeve, corresponding to the sleeve 42 of cylinder 38, and with a piston similar to the piston 39. A connecting rod 45, similar in substantially all respects to the connecting rod is secured to the piston within the cylinder 44 and extends through one end of t e cylinder to engage with a coupling 46 which is secured pivotally to the lever 24, heretofore mentioned. This lever is pivoted near its lower end on a pin carried by the pedestal 3. The movement of the lever 24 about this pivotal point carries with it the rod and moves the piston within the cylinder 44 lirst in a position to uncover and connect the inlet pipe 47 and the outlet pipe 48 which leads to a cylinder 49 mounted on the pedestal of base member 1. Fluid pressure in the cylinder 49 or pipe 48 is exhausted through opening 49'l in the cylinder 44 when the piston in the cylinder 44 is moved into' suitable position, in substantiallythe same manner as has been just described in connection with cylinder 38 and piston 39.
Within the cylinder 49 a piston 49 is reciprocably mounted and carries, at its end a connecting rod which is adjustably connected to the clutch-shifter shaft 20 by a turnbuckle 51. The connecting rod has a bearing in a bracket 52 which comprises a part of the cylinder assembly. Between the piston and the bracket 52 and surrounding the connecting rod is disposed a spring 53 capable of returning the piston within the cylinder to the end of the latter adjacent to the entrance of pipe 48 when the fluid pressure within the cylinder is relieved.
Movement of the piston in cylinder 49 back and forth serves to move the clutchshifter 20 similarly and to engage or disengage the clutch 18 with the drive pulleys 16 and 17.
The connecting rod is provided with a pin extending therethrough and indicated -by character 54. This pin projects through elongated openings 54a in the forked end of a lever 54 keyed to a quadrant shaft 55. This quadrant shaft 55 extends across and is supported on the lower portion of the pedestal 3 by a bearing at either end and carries at the front side of the machine a release lever 56 keyed to the shaft 55. This lever 56 carries a dog 57 and a handle 58 for operating the same, the dog being disposed to engage with a quadrant 59 which has a stop 60. The quadrant as shown is supported by suitable legs 61 on the pedestal 3. The elongated holes 54El in lever 54b permit the shaft 55 to be rotated by the lever 56 and to move the shaft 20 back and forth so as to engage or ldisengage the clutch 18 with the drive pulleys 16 and 17.
The operation of the machine above described is substantially as follows: An elongated metallic article to be bent is secured in position between a suitable bending roll on shaft 6 and follower shoe supported by the holding roll 25 on bracket 26, the hand lever 40 then being actuated to permit fluid under pressure to be delivered into the cylinder 35 forcing out the piston and connecting rod 33, thereby turning the shaft 31 and moving the bracket 26 into holding position with respect to the article to be bent. If desired the piston 39 may be moved into position to lock t-he pressure in the cylinder 35, as by closing the intake opening from pipe 41; When'the article' to be bent has been fixed between the bending roll and the holding roll'25, the machine is ready to be actuated. The lever 56 is then moved to the left by elevating the dog 57 out of contact with the stop 60, thereby moving the clutch shaft 20 tothe left of the apparatus shown in Fi .,2, thereby engaging the clutch 18 with the rotates the drive shaft 15 and the worm 13 turns the worm wheel 12 and with the latter vthe bending roll shaft 6. This rotation continues unt1lthe dog 23* engages with the end of the lever 24 and moves the latter about lts pivot to shift the piston in cylinder 44'so rive pulleyl6, thisv air from pipe 47 andl :pe 48 into the cylinoutwardly l in the cylinder compressing the spring 53 and moving the shaft 20, thereby disengaging the clutch 18 and drive pulley 16 and then 'bringing the clutch 18 into engagement with the drive pulley 17. This movement of the clutch shifter 20 carries with it the lever 56 to the extreme end of the quadrant l59.v The drive pulley 17 rotates the shaft 15 in. the opposite direction thereby returning the shaft 6 to its initial position where the dog 23h contacts with the lever2'4 moving it in the opposite direction about its pivot and moving the piston in cylinder 44 so as to connect the pipe 48 With the discharge outlet 50, thereby relieving pressure in the cylinder 49. When the pressure in the cylinder 49 and against the piston therein is thus relieved, the spring 53 is permitted to function and serves to move the clutch shifter shaft 20 to disengage the clutch 18 and drive pulley 17, this movement being accompanied by a corresponding 'movement of the lever 56 which movement is stopped or intercepted bythe stop 6() on the quadrant 59 with which-the dog 57 engages.
It is preferable that the lever be moved so that pressure from the cylinder 38 may be relieved through outlet 43 at about the time the shaft 6 ceases rotating in its initial direction and begins reversed rotation to restore it to its original position. When this is done the bent article may be removed from between thebending roll on the shaft 6 and the holding roll 25 and taken to the truck or other place of disposal for the bentarticle's. An-
. other article to be bent can be Aprocured during the time the shaft 6 is being rotated to its initial position so that vwhenthe lever 56 has dog 57 engaging the stop 6() and the machine has ceased operating, thc second article will be in position to be. gripped between the bending roll and the holding rollU 25, and the above described operation again repeated.
`It will be vunderstood from the foregoing description that the'operation of the machine just described is extremely easy to perform, is not fatiguing to the operator and does not require the manipulation of many levers or other devices at any time or of any levers at the time when the operator should be giving some attention to the articles being bent. For example, only one lever, namely, lever 40,
needs to bev actuated prior to the time the articles to be bent are gripped against the bending roll. After the article is gripped in bending position only one other lever needs to be actuated, this being lever 56. after which the operation of the machine is naturally automatic until the lever 40 is to be actuated I to release thework blank. The entire operation is therefore, semi-automatic.
It will also be readily apparent to those vmake because of the form,
skilled inlthe art from the foregoing description of the apparatus that we have constructed an apparatus which is extremely easy to the parts comprising the apparatus, which is compact and which does not require very much ioor space, vall as contrasted with bending machines used prior to our invention.
It will'also be evident to those skilled in the art that we have provided a supporting means for the bending roll is of relatively small area and size adjacent to the roll and follower as a result of which it is possible to make a wide variation of sizes and varieties of bends. For example, a bend can be made in one plane followed by a bend of up to or in excess of 180 in another plane without obstruction being offered by theI roll support.
