It is among the objects of my invention to provide a device of the just named'character which will be simple in construction and economical to manufacture.
An object, ancillary to the foregoing, is to provide such a device that may be formed of metal, and preferably by a stamping operation. I Anotherobjectof the invention is to form the device in such away that the operation thereof will be greatly facilitated due to the advantageous handle formation.

I The invention consists in the novel combination'and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, showing the preferred form of construction and in which: V

Carpet needles of the type herein disclosed are adapted for the insertion of the weft between the warp threads in a manner well understood in the art.- In my preferred form of construction as disclosed in the accompanying drawings, I provide two members which, are secured together for relative reciprocation. One of these members carries the needle and the other carries the looper, these terms being specifically defined hereinafter.
The needle 10 is formed substantially U shaped as shown best in Fig. 3 and includes a pointed end 11. An eye" is formed in the needle 10 near the pointed end 11 thereof through whichthe weft is inserted during operation of the needle. In operation, the needle carryingthe weft thread is inserted between two threads of the warp. In order to retain the weft inthis inserted position a NEEDLE 9, 1927. Serial No. 218,531.

The needle 10 is secured, by any suitable medium, such as the rivets 13, to the needle member 14. The looper 15 is secured, as by rivets 16', to the looper member 17. As

The members 14 and 17 include co-extensive portions 18 and 19, respectively. In the portion 18 of the needle member 14 a slot 20 is formed. A rivet 21 is secured to the.
portion 19 of the looper member lTand eX- tends through the slot- 20. The rivet 21 has a headed end 22 which serves to hold members 14 and 17 in slidable relation, in such a man-- er as to provide a certain amount of relative side movement therebetween. The portion 19 of the looper memberlT has a slot 23' formed therein and the rivet 2 1 carried'by the portion 18 extends therethrough and has a headed end 25 which also acts to hold the members 14 and 17 in slidable relation.
The parts as illustratedin Fig. 1 are in' cation of the members 14 and 17 a suitable handle structure is provided.
As depicted, the portion 18 has an offset portion 26 in the region of the section to which the needle 10 is secured. This offset portion is provided in order that the needle 10 and looper 15 may be properly mounted. Formed unitarily with the offset portion 26 is a portion 27 which is bent rearwardly so as to be coextensive for a predetermined distance with the portion 18 but in spaced relation thereto, thus being substantially U-shaped in form. At the upper end of the portion 18 an extension 28 thereof is provided which is substantially S-shaped and which includes a portion 29 disposed so as to be coextensive with, for a short distance, butspaced from the portion 18. The portion 28 terminates in a. portion 30 that extends parallel to and which is juxtaposed to the upper end of the portion 27. The ends of portions 30 and 27 terminate at the same point so as to provide a tangportion and the handle 31 is secured thereto.
The portion 19 has a portion 27 at its lower end which is disposed and formed similarly to the portion 27. The portion 19 also includes an S-shaped portion 28 which has an end portion 30 arranged similarly to the portion 30. The handle 31 is secured to the ends of the portions 30 and 27 in the same manner as the handle 31 is secured to the ends of portions 27 and 30.
By grasping the handles 31 and 31 and allowing the index fingers to lie on the pertions 27 and 27" an operative may very expeditiously employ the needle structure. Since certain of the fingers will be disposed between the portions 29 and 29 and the handles 31 and 31Vand because of the provision for the index fingers the needle structure may be firmly held and therefore very accurately guided. p
It is apparent that the structure is very simple and may be formed of metal in a very expeditious manner.
If desired,the portions 27 and 2 may be omitted and the portions 28 and 28 may be disposed at right angles to the portions 18 and 19 and the handles 31 and 31 would then be secured to these portions 28 and 28. However, I have found the previously described structure to be very advantageous and it is the preferred form. 7
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying iny invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification, without departing from the spirit of the invention. 1, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention what ipeasso I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
1. A device of the class described including a needle member carrying a needle at the forward end thereof, a looper member carrying a looper at the forward end thereof adapted to cooperate with said needle, said needle member and said looper member embodying coextensive portions adapted to be slidably secured together, said members including portions adapted tocooperate with said co-exten sive portions to form substantially U-shaped portions with the bight portion thereof arranged adjacent said needle and looper, said co-extensive portions having substantially shaped portions at the opposite ends from said bight sections, said S-shaped portions including portions adapted to cooperate with the cooperating portions of said U-shaped portions to form tang elements, andhandles p secured to said tang elements.
2. A device of the class described including a needle member carrying a needle at the forward'end thereof, a looper member, carrying a looper at the forward end thereof adapted to cooperate with said needle, said needle member and said looper member embodying co-extensiveportions, means for slidably connecting said co-extensive portions for reciprocation relative to each other, said members including portions extending away from the point-of connection of said members with said needle and said looper to form said members into substantially U-shape, and portions extending from the ends of said co -extensive portions adapted to cooperate with the ends of said portions defining said U-shape to provide tang elements, and handle members connected to said tang elements.
3. A device of the class described including substantially U-shaped needle and looper members, said members including coextensive portions, means for connecting said coextensive portions for relative reciprocation,
