Reference is had to the accompanying drawings which illustrate the preferred form of the invention, though it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the exact details of construction shown and described, as it is obviousthat various modifications thereof withinthe scope ofthe claims will occur to persons skilled in the art.
In said drawings: Figure 1 is a view in elevation of a metal door constructed in accordance with thisinvention;
Fig. 2 is a broken vertical section taken on the line 2--2'of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a broken horizontal section taken ron the line 3-3 of Fig. 1;
Fig-4 is a fragmentary view 1n elevation drawn to a larger scale and showing ar corner fformed by the top rail and one of the stiles; fFig. 5 is a Vertical section taken on the line 5--5 of Fig. 4;
Fig. 6 is` a'view similar to Fig. 4 showing a corner formed by the bottom rail and one of the Stiles;
y Fig. 7 is a horizontal section taken on line 7-7 of Fig. 6; and
Figs. 8 and 9 are fragmentary sections taken on the lines 8-8 and 9--9 respectively, of Fig. 1.
It is an object of this invention to provide. a metal door of simple and rugged construe# tion which may be readily and economically v f manufactured. l
` As shown in the drawings, a door constructedy in accordance with this invention comprises a metal sheet or plate 1 'provided at its edges withftop and bottom rails 2 and 4 respectively, and stiles 6 and 8. Each of the stiles and rails is formed of a single metal sheet bent to a rectangular yshape to provide integral ystructures having side portions 10, outer edge portions 12 and inner edge portions 13 and 14 on'which are formed inwardly projecting flangesvl and 16, respectively, which engage on opposite sides of sheet 1 and are secured thereto by rivets 18. The meeting ends of the stiles and rails are mitred as at 19 and are secured together by welding along the vseam y or in any suitable manner and by being 1ivet 50 edto spacing or filler `blocks 20 which are 1927. Serial No. 201,733.l
inserted into the corners. The filler blocks 20 are formed with oppositely disposed depressed portions 21 to which the Stiles and rails are fitted so as to interlock therewith and through which the riveting is effected as by rivets 17.
The upper rail 2 is reinforced by an angle 22 which engagesthe outer edge portiony l2 and one of the side portions 10 of the rail, and extends between the filler blocks inside of the rail. The flange 23 of the angle 22 which contacts with a vside portion 10 of the rail overlaps the filler blocks as at 24 and is secured thereto by screws 26 which extend through the filler blocks, the flange of the angle 22 and through the side portions 10 of the rail 2. Screws 28 which secure the angle 22 to the side portion l0 of the rail also secure a fiat hanger plate 30 to the outside of the side portion 10 which is engaged by the angle 22, the hanger plate 30 projecting above the door edge and having the hanger brackets (not shown) secured thereto. The outer edge portion of the bottom rail 4 is reinforced by a channel 32 which extends from side to side of the door within the rail and beneath the filler blocks 20, the filler blocks being spaced from the bottom edge of the door for this purpose. Screws 34 which secure the channel 32 in po sition also secure a Z-shaped guide plate 35 which engages one side and the outer edge portion of the rail and has a flange 37 proiecting outwardly from thedoor edge to form a guide flange. y
Y The stiles 6 and 8 are provided with reinforcing channels 36 and y38, respectively, which extend within the respective Stiles from the outer edge portion of the top rail 2 Vto the top of the reinforcing channel 32 in the bottom rail 4, the filler blocks 20 having their edges reduced in thickness as at 39 so as to `fit between the flanges of the channels 36 and 38. Screws 40 secure the channels to the edge portions of the stiles and filler blocks. To the edge of the stile 8, screws 43 secure the rubber weather strip 42.
To form the panels, pressed channel-shaped members 44 and 46, having outwardly projecting flanges 48, are ysecured to one side of the vsheet 1 by rivets 50 so as to form a center rail which extends bet-Ween the Stiles 6 and 8 and a center stile Which extends from the bottom rail 4 to the rail formed by the member 44. Where the'member 44 engages with 5 the stiles 6 and 8, the flanges 48 are cut away so as to permit the flanges 48 to abut againstthe ianges of the Stiles and permit the channel portion of the-member 44 toerigage the inner edge portions of the Stiles. The mem. ber 44is secured to the stiles 6 and 8 by welding along the seams andfby rivets 5l which replace the rivets in the flanges of the vStiles and extend through the web portion 534 of the channel and through spacing blocks be-r tween the web and the flanges ofthe stiles. W' here the member 46 engages with the rail 4and the rail formed by the member 44, itsV ianges 48 are cut away to permit the flanges and .channel portion to abutthe rails in the samemanner as the member 44 engages the Stiles, and the member 46 is lSecured in the same manner as the member 44. s
v In the upper panel formed in sheet l, two rectangular openings are formed by punching to receive the glass panels 70, Z-shaped framing strips 52 being secured about the openings toone side of sheet l byy rivetsj54,
while glass retaining strips 56 are secured about the openings on the other side of sheet l l by screws 58.` yTo the stile-'6 are secured Y the handles 60 and 62 by means of rivets or bolts 64 which extend through the openings in the handle and'through the tillerblocks 20, 66 and'? Secured in the stile. To provide 3.5 for securing the door, the eye 68 for a door securing hasp is secured to the stile at the filler block 67. Y
What is claimed is:
