Angleiron metal rectangular frames 1, 2, have extending s therebetween outer sheet metal housing 3 spaced by heat resisting ller or insulation 4 from inner housing 5. The housing front angle frame 2 has its inwardly extending leg or flange 6 directly coact with outer section 7 of the4 door jamb. This section 7 as nesting within the leg 6 of the frame 2, has an extension 8 snugly fitting within the outer housing wall 3 as mounted within this front frame 2. This jamb 7 has from its plane a straight portion 9 extending perpen'dicularly inward to undercut 10, extending down from one side for groove 11. From` the groove 11 and parallel to the jamb portion 7 there is groove side portion 12 extending directly inward to portion 13, parallel with the portion 9. This portion 13 extends to portion 14 diverging fromthe portion 10, andterminates at portion 15 parallel with, the portions 9, 11, 13. At the portions of the jamb as connecting the hinge sides there extends rearwardly from the jamb portion 7, a straight portion 21 to inwardly extending portion 22, which terminates in a portion 23 parallel with the portion 21. This portion 23 terminates forwardly in a portion 24 parallel with the portion 7, and extends to rearwardly extending portion 25 parallel-with the portion 21. This rearwardly extending portion 25 terminates in a portion 26 extending over to forwardly extending portion'27 parallel with the portion 25.` This portion 27 termi-y nates in a portion 28 parallel with the portions 7, 22, 24, 26,'whicl1 terminates in a portion 29 parallel with the portions 8, 21, 23, 25, 27. There is accordingly provided directly. forwardly open grooves 30, 31, in the non-hinge carrying side portions of the jamb. l

Ribs 32, 33, extend into-the grooves 18, 20, adjacent said' merging, while ribs 34, 35, 36, merge directly into the adjacent jamb structure bordering the other ribs and grooves. The ribs 32, 34, are` discontinuous,and likewise the ribs 33, 35. The safe is shown as of the double door type having first door 37 and second door 38. In door operation, the door 37 is closed, handle 39 operated to throw its bolts, then the door 38 is closed, its handle 39 operated, and then by means of spindle 40, the finallocking is' completed.
The door 37 is shown as comprising an outer plate 41, an inner plate 42 with insulation filler 4 therebetween. The outer plate 41 is mounted by leaf hinges 43 engaging with hinge pins 19 carried by hinge leaves 44 upon the frame 2 and the door j amb.
These doors are provided with endless door` frames. These frames on the hinge side cornprise flange portion 45 adjacent theplate 41. Inwardly extending from this flange portion 45 and 4parallel to the jamb portion 9 is straight portion 46 extending to portion 47, parallel with the portion 10, and terminating in portion 48, parallel with the portion 11.
This portion 48 extends to portion 49 extending toward the jamb portion 12 when the door is in closed position. This portion 49 terminates in portion 50 parallel with the portion 12 extending to portion 51 parallel with This frame from the portion 51 has portions 52, 53, 54, 55, respectively parallel with the portions 14, 15, 16, 17, of the jamb. This portion 55 terminates in port-ion 56 parallel With the portion 45 extending inward to provide offset seat 57 for the innery door plate 42.
The companion or second door 38 has outer plate 58, and inner plate 59 with intermediate insulation filler 4. At its hinge side the frame for this second door is similar to the frame of the first door, and these frames accordingly at their hinge sides provide diverging ribs 60, 61, ,on opposite sides of the plane of the hinge pivots 19 as perpendicular to the planes of the respectivedoors. f
Extending from the hinge sides of the respective doors, the door frames comprise portions 62, 63, 64, 65,66, 67, 68, 69, 70, respectively'parallel with the door jambY portions 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29. There is accordingly provided ribs 32, 33, as straight ribs for directly respectively extending into outwardly open grooves 71,72, of the door frame as the offset or diverging ribs 60, 61, Vextend .respectively into undercut grooves 18, 20.

The grooves 71, 72, are bordered by ribs 73, 74, 75. Between the ribs 60,61, is groove 76. The rib 88 extends to merge with rib 75 but owing to groove 72 running out, this rib 88 does not merge with the rib 74. The groove 71 runs out so that the rib 87 is short of' merging into rib 73.
The second door 38 has at its edge remote fromv its hinge mounting and between its frame portions 45, 56, stepped portions 89, 90, 91,92, 93, 94, 95, 96, 97, respectively in closed position parallel to the portions 77, 78, 79, 80, 81, 82, 83, 84, 84', of the frame portion of the first door 37.
This second door accordingly provides the ribs 98, 99, 100, spaced by grooves 101, 102. The ribs 98, 99, do not merge into the respective ribs 73, 74, for the reason that the grooves 71, 72, run out therebetween. The grooves 101, 102, extend into the respective grooves 71, (2;
The stepped structure of ribs and grooves, it is to be noted, is of differing characteras on adjacent sides of the jamb and on adjacent sides of the door frames, but as merging into each other at the jamb, said interlocking stepped structure is continuous. The only running out occurs between the pair of doors and such running out cooperates in continuity as to the j amb.
The inset placing of the pivot axis for the hinges is such that the outer rib and groove in approximating a tangent on one side of such pivot axis plane diverges from the inner ribbed structure on the opposite side of such plane. Accordingly these diverging groove and rib interlocking joints are effective in cooperation for binding sealing instead of release when the safe is subjected to temperature strains as incase of being in a conflagration. As the heat expansion comes into. play the bulging and swelling only serves more tightly to lock and bind the doors against opening. There is accordingly a fire proof maintained sealing under the most trying conditions of practice.
Effectiveness of this joint against transmittingl heat is enhanced by compressible packing 103 in the jamb grooves between the groove side 10 toward the hinge and the rib side 47, said packing 103 normally being placed in the groove side 10. Similar packing 103 is placed in the groove side 14 to have the door rib side 52 crowd -thereagainst as the heathacts in tendingto bulge o1' expand the safe structure. As this packing 103 extendsint-o the corners it overlaps'or abuts packing 104 in. groove root portions 22, 26, against which abut door frame ribs 30, 68. Accordingly `this sealing by abutting the packing is endless or continuous with the groove and rib interlocking feature vbetween the door frame and jamb. In the double door structure the joint between the doors is also sealed by packing 104 in the groove roots 7 8,'

Bulging or expanding of the frame 2 in the structure as herein disclosed has its tendency to disturb the joint minimized due to the clearance between the web 6 of the frame 2 and the jamb section 9. While the hinge leaf 4:4: is mounted on the frame 2, the exposure of the jamb section 7 as to its thin wall between the portion 9 and the frame leg or web 6 creates a region of thin metal between the j amb proper and the frame. This means that in high heating emergency, expansion or bulging tendency of the frame 2 may react or e.)
for stretching this section 7 of thin highly heated metal instead of tending to pull open the more rigid joint structure, the filling tending to reduce heat penetration and thereby render the joint sufliciently rigid to allow of this action. This is accordingly a factor in the production of this heat resistant joint. Still a further feature against heat conductivity is the pocket 105 as a chamber between the groove side 12 and the rib side 49. This chamber forms a dead air space of heat resistant value.
What is claimed and it is desired to secure by Letters Patent is l. An angle metal frame, an outer wall nested in an endless rearwardly extending flange of said frame, an inner Wall parallel to said outer wall, a filler therebetween, and a folded sheet metal door jamb nesting within the inwardly extending flange of said frame 'and extending to within said inner wall, said folded jamb extending directly outward in the direction of the inner wall to fit on thev inner side of said wall, the outer sideof the jamb as forming a door opening extending perpendicularly inward, and an intermediate portion of said j amb comprising a rib between a pair of grooves, said grooves being vintermediate said directly outward and perpendicularly inward portions and in addition thereto.

4. A door having a hinge side, along said side an offset rib, and along said door parallel sides extending from said hinge side an outwardly straight rib merging directly into said offset rib to form a continuous rib.

A door having ahinge side, along said continuous side a plurality of oppositely offset ribs,and along the parallel sides of said door extending from saidhinge side outwardly straight ribs, said offset ribs and straightribs merg` ing to approximate parallel continuous ribs. 6. A door jamb, and double doors therefor, said jamb having yhinges along opposite sides thereof for the doors, said sides connecting said hinge sides `of the j ambk having outwardly open grooves, and said doors having ribs running out as registering with said grooves, the first of said doors having along its free edge grooves ext-ending beyond the ends of its ribs as running out with the roots thereof in the planes of the outer faces of the ribs,the second door having its adjacent free ends provided with ribs for entering ythe groovesrof the irst door, said ribs extending short of the ribs of the second door.
7. A door jamb having an endless groove differently directed on adjacent sides of said door, and a. discontinuous rib adjacent said groove, and door means'closable against the jamb for continuous'sealed joint coaction with saidgroove.

A door jamb providing an opening, and double doors therefor, said jamb having inwardly overhanging hinges into the reg gions in front of said opening alo-ngopposite `sides thereof for the doors, said jamb sides connecting said hinge sides of the jamb having outwardly open grooves, and said doors having ribs registering with said grooves,
the first doorl to be closed having in the planes of the roots of said ribs grooves from the termini of said ribs, and the second door to be closed having ribs to interfit with said grooves of; the first door.

A` safe having a frame, a jamb carried in` said frame to provide a door seat, said jalnb inwardly extending from said frame to provide a door opening spaced in the plane of the frame from the frame, a door movable 40, into said door seat and there having peripheral clearance as to the frame, and hinge mounting means for thek vdoor extending to saidframe. A safe having a corner frame, thereY beingI a door opening for said safe bounded by said corner frame, a jamb carried in said frame and providing a door seat, said jamb extending from said frame in the plane of. the frame as a spacer for said door opening from 50, the frame, and a door movable into said door seat to have in closed yposition a clearway peripherally as to the frame as determined by the spacer portion'of said j amb.
