Description

Feb. 18, 1930. c. F. GILBERT BREEDING APPLIANCE Filed 001;. 19. 1928 r K... MJW w m 9 Patented Feb. 18, 1930 PATENT? OFFICE BREEDING APPLIANCE Application filed October 19, 1928, Serial No. 313,471, and in Canada October 9, 1928.
The invention relates to a breeding appliance as described in the present specification and shown in the accompanying drawings which form part of the same.
In the breeding of animals, particularly thoroughbreds; following copulation the fe male is wont to arch her backand eject the semen thus destroying conception. The present invention comprehends an appliance that may be fitted to the back of a cow or other animal in order to prevent this arching and destructive organism during the period immediately following mating. There is a particular spot along a female animals back that is extremely sensitive and upon which slight pressure will preclude arching or when the back is arched will cause it to sag. Advantage is taken of this fact in carrying out the present invention which comprises an appliance for applying pressure at this particular point of the animals back.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a general view of the invention shown in applied position upon a cow.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the invention on an enlarged scale, parts of the securing straps bein broken away.
Figure 3 is a transverse section through the device illustrating a screw and wing-nut for so clamping the pressure applying element in various positions.
Like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in. each of the figures throughout the drawings.
In the drawings, the reference numeral 5 denotes a flat board of rigid material that eX- tends lengthwise of the animals back. This board is comparatively narrow and is supported at its forward end upon the back through the medium of a pad 6 of soft material. The underface 7' of this pad is shaped to conform to the profile of the back in order to securt a firm seat for the board and also to preclude discomfort to the animal.
8 is the pressure applying element which consists of a flat spring 9 located beneath the board 5 and bent downwardly therefrom to the distal end 10 which carries an integral pad 11 similar to the pad 6 previously recounted. This spring has a stud or screw 12 rigidly rising from its upper face and proj ecting through an elongated slot 13, see Figure 3. The protrudingend is provided with a wing-nut 14 which upon being tightened clamps the spring to the board.
' 15 and 16 is a pair of flexible straps for an choring the board to the animal, which straps are fastened in any suitable manner to said board and encompass the body, being provided with broad belly-bands 17 and buckles 18 or equivalent mechanical means for purposes of adjustment. The front strap 15 is tightened sufficiently to retain the appliance securely in place, while the rear strap 16 is tightened to a somewhat greater extent in order to bear down upon the unsupported rear end of the board thus causing the pad 11 of the spring to bear locally upon the back. The pressure applying element 8 is adjusted by hand lengthwise of the board 5 until the pro- I per spot on the animals back is located whereupon the wing-nut is tightened to retain it in this position.
It is to be understood that this appliance is to be fitted to an animal directly following copulation and may be removed when the period of conception has passed.
lVhereas the invention has been shown and described in its preferred form of construction it is nevertheless apparent that various modifications might be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
l Vhat I claim is 1. A breeding appliance of the class described comprising afiat spring curved lengthwise in a downward direction, a pad carried by the lower end thereof for bearing upon the back of an animal, a supporting structure, and means for anchoring the said supporting structure to the animal.
2. A breeding appliance of the class described comprising a fiat spring .curved lengthwise in a downward direction, a pad carried by the lower end thereof for hearing upon the back of an animal, a supporting structure, a stud rigidly rising from the spring and projecting upwardly through an aperture in the said supporting structure, a wing-nut fitted on, said stud, and means for anchoring the supporting structure to the animal.
3. A breeding appliance of the class described comprising a flat board for extending along the back of an animal, a pressure applying element fitted to the underside thereof for bearing locally upon the animals back, a
pad borne by the front end of the board and shaped tothe profile of the back, and'a pair-015' anchoring straps attached to the board, one on each side of the pressure applying element said straps being arranged to encompass the body of the animal. Signed at Fergus Ontario,' Canada, this 20th day of July, 1929.
