This invention relates to machines for filling bags with freely flowing pulverulentmaterial, such as cement, and more especially to machines of this general character in which the bags are filled through spouts which are introduced within the bags. Such machines are commonly used for the filling of self-closing bags, known as valve bags, but the present invention is applicable to the filling of bags whether or not they are of the self-closing type. In accordance with the invention the bag to be filled is held upon and supported by the filling spout during the operation or filling and is released therefrom when the predetermined quantity of material has been delivered into the bag. In the embodiment of the invention which has been chosen for illustration herein the filling spout, by which the bag is supported during the filling, is carried by one arm of a lever on the other arm of which is a counterbalance for the weight of the filling spout and the bag. A means is provided whereby, when the desired quantity of material has entered the bag, the lever is caused to swing on its axis and the inclination of the supporting part of the filling spout is increased sufficiently to permit the bag to slip from the spout. To prevent accidental disengagement of the bag from the spout there is provided a clamping device or presser by which, during the filling operation, the bag is pressed against the filling spout. lVhen the supporting lever is swung upon its axis the spout is moved away trom the clamp or presser and the bag is then free to slip from the spout.' The invention will be more fully explained hereinafter with reference to the accompanying draw ing, the single figure of which shows in outline and somewhat diagrammatically a practical embodiment of the invention.

When the gate is open the material runs into a filling spout 0 which may have at its upper end a funnel 0 and has its lower portion 0 which is adapted to enter, through an opening at one corner, the bag to be filled, inclined or disposed at an angle with respect to the upper portion of the filling spout. The inclination of the lower portion 0 of the filling spout is such that during the operation of filling the bag (Z will be supported in filling position by the spout, while a change in the position of the filling spout which materially increases the angle of the portion 0 with respect to a horizontal plane, will permit the bag to slip from the filling spout.
The filling spout is supported by one arm of a lever c which is shown as pivoted at 6 on a rod or bar 7. On the opposite side of the pivot'e the lever carries a counterbalance weight 6 the position of which may be adjusted nearly ,to balance the weight of the other arm of the lever, the filling spout and the empty bag. a
To prevent accidental displacement of the bag during the filling operation there is provided a clamp or presser g which may be pivoted on an arm 7' of the rod or bar f. During the filling of the bag the weight of the filling spout and the bag, with its contents, swings the inclined portion 0 of the spout, with increasing force as the filling proceeds, toward the presser g, the bag being thereby clamped between the filling spout and the presser g.
It is not intended that the bag, when filled, shall slip from the filling spout until released by the presser. There is, therefore, provided a means for causing the bag, the filling spout and the supporting lever e to swing about the axis 6 in such direction as to swing the inclined portion 0 of the spout away from the presser g. Obviously, such means might be applied in different positions and might be operated by hand or otherwise. In the embodiment of the invention illustrated such means is shown as an arm it having at its eX- tremity a striker or roller 7L1 and mounted on a shaft h which may be rotated at the proper time by any suitable means. The striker 7L1 is thus brought in contact with the bag (1, preferably'at the bottom of the bag near the corner, as indicated, causing the bag, the filling spout and the lever to swing about the axis 6 moving the inclined portion of the spout away from the presser g and leaving the bag free to slip from the filling spout.
It Will be understood that various changes in details of construction and arrangement can be made to suit different conditions of use and that, except as indicated in the claims, the invention is not restricted to the particular construction shown and described herein.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a bag filling machine, the combination of a filling spout adapted to enter and support a bag to be filled and inclined to permit the filled bag to be slipped therefrom, means to dislodge the bag from the inclined portion of the spout, a lever by which the filling spout is supported, and a presser toward which the filling spout is pressed by the weight of the bag and its contents to clamp the bag against the presser.
2. In a bag filling machine, the combination of a filling spout adapted to enter and support a bag to be filled and inclined to permit the filled bag to be slipped therefrom, means to dislodge the bag from the inclined portion of the spout, a lever by which the filling spout is supported, a presser toward which the filling spout is pressed by the weight of the bag and its contents to clamp the bag against the presser, and means to cause the bag and the spout to swing and move the spout from the presser to release the bag.
