Description
Feb.' 18, 1930. Z ZAWYRUCHiA 1,747,278
SIGNAL Filed July 27, 1928 Patented Feb. 18, 1930 UNITED STATES PATENT @Fics SIGNAL Application iiled July 27, 1928.
This invention relates to improvements in signals, primarily intended to provide means for holding a series of flags or signals, any one of which may be exposed, together with means for detachably supporting the series of flags on a railroad track.
The prime object of the invention is to provide a collapsible standard and support having means in the standard for mounting a plurality of flags, with means for retaining the flags in closed or folded condition or exposing any one of the flags at will.
A. further obj ect of the invention is to provide a combined closure and means for ex posing the flags.
The invention also comprehends improvements in the details of construction and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
ln the accompanying drawing,
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the device showing a flag exposed for signal purposes.
Fig. 2 is a similar view illustrating the flag standard with the flag closure in position to house the flags.
Fig. 3 is a det-ail perspective view of the standard with the flags removed.
Fig. 4 is an elevation of the signal, showing the parts in folded relation.
Fig. 5 is a section on line 5-5 of Fig. l.
In the drawing, 1 indicates a base member formed at one end with an inturned flange 2, to engage the base flange of a rail 3 shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1. The base member is formed of two sections 4 and 5, hinged together at 6. At the end of the section 5 is a socket 7 to receive a standard 8, the upper end of which is bifurcated at 9, the bifurcated portion being cut out on opposite sides of the standard to form pockets 10, 10.
A series of folding arms 11 are pivoted on a transverse pin l2 in the lo-wer end of the bifurcated portion 9. Signal flags 13 are secured between pairs of adjacent arms 11, each fia-g being substantially V-shape and extending through the slot of the bifurcated portion, so that when the arms are extended the particular flag is exposed on opposite sides of the standard.
Serial No. 295,774.
Three flags of different colors are mounted in the standard, but obviously the invention is not limited to this number.
To secure the flags and hold them in open upright position when the arms are spread apart, bolts 15 extend through the bifurcated portion of the standard. Vhen the bolts are tightened, the flags are clamped and the weight of the arms hold the flags in fully exposed position.
A cap 16 fits over the upper end of the standard, the cap being formed with aligned slots 17 which register with'the pockets 10, 10. The aligned slots are of sufficient width to permit passage of any one of the several flags, when spread out, and at the same time the cap will retain the other flags in packed condition within the pockets.
A brace 18 is hinged at 19 to a slide 9.() mounted on the section 4 of the base. rThe upper end of the brace is bifurcated at 21 to embrace the standard, and a pin 22 secures. the brace and standard together.
In use the flange 2 of the base is hooked over one edge of the base of a railway rail, and an adjustable flange 23 on the base, held by a set-screw 24, engages the opposite side of the rail base to hold the device in position. Then the brace 18 is locked in position, and by raising the cap 16, the desired flag for a particular signal is pulled out o f the pockets 10, 10, as shown in Fig. 1. The cap 16 is then replaced, the extended flag passing through the slots 17, while the adjacent side walls act to retain the folded flags in the pockets.
Gbviously, if a dider'ent colored Hag for another signal is desired, the cap can with convenience be raised, the extended flag folded in the pockets and another flag extended.
When the device is not in use, the flags are folded and so retained by the cap; and the brace folded up on the hinged joint 6 close to the standard after the pin 22 is withdrawn, thus forming a compact arrangement.
Vhat I claim is 1. A flag holder of the character described comprising a standard bifurcated at its upper end and provided with pockets, a series of flags pivotally mounted in the standard and adapted to be folded in the pockets, and a cap telescopically fitted over the bifurcated portion of the standard and provided with slots adjacent the pockets and adapted to straddle one of the flags on opposite sides of the standard when spread out, and further adapted to confine the flags not in use Within the pockets.
2. A flag holder of the character described comprising a standard bifurcated at its upper end and out out on opposite sides at the bifurcated portion to provide pockets, a series of arms pivotally mounted in the bifurcated portion of the standard and adapted to swing outwardly therefrom, flags extending between opposite arms and adapted to be folded in the pockets or extended therefrom, and a cap having slots, the cap tting over the standard to retain the flags in the pockets or permit one of the flags to be spread out through the slots.
3'. A flag holder of the character described comprising a standard bifurcated at its upper end, a pivot in the standard, a series of frames mounted on the pivot flexible flags clamped in thev bifurcated portion of the standard, pockets formed on each side of the standard adjacent the bifurcated portion, a cap having slots, the cap engaging over the standard to hold the flags in the pockets and the slots permitting one of the flags to be extended, and a collapsible base to support the standard.
4. A flag holder of the character described comprising a bifurcated' standard having pockets on opposite sides, a series of frames pivoted in the standard, a series of flags mounted on the frames and extending through the bifurcated portion of the standard and adapted when folded to be stored within the pockets, bolts extending through the bifurcated portion of the standard and the flags to clamp the latter in position in the standard, and means for retaining the flags in folded condition in the pockets or permitting one of the flags to be extended on opposite sides of the standard.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
LEE Z. ZAWYRUCHIA.
