Description
N. I. DONALIDSON.
INHALEIL No.1'7472%. Pabehtedjbliarchl4, 1876.
: NI'IED STA'IES PATENT OFFICE NILES I. DONALDSON, OF WQROESTER UOUNTY, MASSAOHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN INHALERS.
Spe'eification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 1743724, clated March 14,1876; 'applioation filed J anuary 8, 1876.
T0 all whom it mag; concem Be it known Chat I, NILES I. DONALDSON, of Worcester eounty, Massachusetts, have invented eertain Improvements in Inhalers, oi' which the following isa specifieation:
The natura of my i1wention eonsists in so arranging two air-ehambers wih euch einher, and'with a small detaehable reservoir in the bot-tom of one, that they forma a eombined inhaler and exhaler an; one and the sa-xne time, for medioal purposes, the detaohable reservoir beiug iuserted in the bottom of one of the chambers with a rubber band, and being so nrranged ahnt it can be easily displaeed ab will, und others of the same size und shape, containiug difl'eren aeiols, be inserted by the operutor. Said detachable reservoirs conta in asbestus, er other porous substanee, in order to hold the liquid aeids, seid invention appearing 1nore Iully by reference so the aceompunying drawing, of which drawing Figure l is a perspeetive view.
T0 enuble others skilled in the art to make und use my invention, I will proeeed to expluiu it more i'ully.
A in the drawing is a oommon bottle-shaped ainchamber, with a hole in Lhe cork for ingress und egress 01" wir, und 130 insert; a tube, if desired. II; is also open ab the lower end. a is a deaehable reservoir filled wit;h asbestue, 01 obher substances not easily deeoxnposed byacids. b is a rubber fing, to make the reservoir fit tightly in the bobtom of the airchamber A. 1 hzwe a number of these coutaining different aeids and eompounds so be used. The object of the asbestus is 130 hold the aoids so that they will more readily receive the aetiou of the zur, und bresent a much larger surt'ace to its aotion, und thus throw oft more effeetually ics gases, and also prevent the liquid aeid from running out of the taube und reservoir. The instrument: may be conveyed from plaee to plane in the pooket without spilling the acids and other fluids.
Bis another large air-chamber of the sonne size am]. shape as A, except that it is closed ac the bottom, und has fitted in the bottom a small quantity 0f sponge, or asbestus, 150 hold the ammoniafced substances intact, and more effectually expose it fo the, aetion of the a ir. The bottom of this ainchamber contains amrnoniated substanoes, 01 othe'r medicuted substances, whio h are intended to be used in comnection with the aeid-fuxnes. f is a mouthtube ii1serted in the eork, ab the top 0f the air-ehmnber B. g is a glass tube with a smu'll bulb end 130 insert in the nose, eye, or ear,
when the instrument is to be used as an ex haler, er when medicuted fumes are to be forced out of the instrument into the eye, nose, er ear by the operator. aperture passing from one air-ohamber B to A, so as to a1low a, free mixture of the gases arising from the ae'id und ammoniated substzmees 01 ooher eompounds.
New, wh'en the operator wishes to use my invention, he ean plaee in the bottomof the air-eha1nber A and B whatever acid und ammoniated er medioal eompounds he wishes to inhale er exhale. If he wishes to use it by iuhaling, he ean dr uw the fumes through the xnouth-tube; if he wishes t0 foree the fumes into the eye, uose, er eur of another, he canblow it through the tube 9- New, what I claim, und for whieh I askh is a small
