DISPLAY RACK Filed Aug. 26, 1921 2 Sheets-Shoot '2 Patented Feb. 18,v 1930 PATIENT OFFICE EDMUND L. DES J'ARDINS, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS DISPLAY RACK Application filed August 26, 1927.
This invention relates to a display rack which is adapted for displaying articles in a store window or which may be used as an easel or for other purposes.
The invention concerns itself with such a display rack which can be readily put together or taken apart, and which can be readily conture and combination of parts hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out and defined in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate a preferred embodiment of this invention and in which similar reference numer als refer to similar features in the different views:
Figure 1 is a front elevational view of my novel display rack; Figure 2 is a side elevation thereof.
Figure 3 is a front elevational View of one of the rack elements.
' Figure 4 is a side elevational View of the rack element shown in Figure 3, illustrating its assembly with a stanchion member such as a cardboard cover.
Figure 4C is a side elevational View of a modified form of rack element adapted to carry a box cover in a position to'display the outer face thereof.
Figure 5 is an enlarged sectional view taken upon the line V-V of Figure 1 looking in the direction of the arrow.
Figure 6 is a sectional View taken upon the line VI,VI of Figure 5.
Figure 7 is an enlarged sectional view taken upon the line VII-VII of Figure 2.
Figure 8 illustrates a stamped blank of cardboard or the like from which certain rack elements may be formed.
Referring to the drawings, it will be noted that the display rack consists of a stanchion member 1 which may be formed of a flat piece of cardboard or the like. The base of the stanchion member 1 extends horizontally in Serial No. 215,561.
order that it may rest upon a horizontal surface. The upper portion of the stanchion member may be of any desired configuration. In the present instance, it is shown as of a circular contour.
Upon one side of the stanchion member are a pair of downwardly diverging slits 2 for receiving the diverging arms 3 of a rack element 4. It will be noted that the arms 3 extend intermediate the upper and lower elements of the rack element 4', as shown in F igure 5. The lower portions of the arm 3 are separated from the body portion of the rack element by clefts 5 which have straight walls 6 that contact with the stanchion member and curved walls 7 that allow a rotational movement of the rack element. The cleft 5 terminates in a restricted slot at its upper edge of a size that would readily admit the thickness of the stanchion member 1. Between the upper ends of the arms 3 and the body portion of the rack element 4 are slots or notches 8 which are of a suficient size to readily receive the stanchion member 1. Above the arms 3, the body portion has a spire 4 having a frontal sloping surface 9 against which the stanchion member 1 may rest. It will be noted'that the diverging arms 3 constitute the forward portions of the wings of a folded piece of cardboard or the like. The
Adjacent the rackelement l, thereis show-natseoond rack: element 18which also consists of a pair of diverging arms llrjust as in the first form. The rack element 13 is similar to the rack element withregard to assembly and the manner of supportingthestanchion 1i It differs, however, in certain respects which will now be described The arms 14 ofthis rack 13, which may be termed a supplementary rack, have provision for a horizontal platform or table 15. The table 15 has a rear downwardly extending flap 16 that enters the slot that receives the stanchion member 1. At the forward endof the table 15 are-undercut or notched lugs 17, the forward edge of'the table 15 fitting in :the notches of said: lugs as-shown in Figures 1 and 2. The arms 14 are also provided with downwardly sloping faces18 terminatingc'in supporting: shoulders 11 whereby. articles: may. alsobesupported in a manner: similar-to the rack element 4;, The platform mayibeiuse'd' to support or display, an article suclras illustrated by. the reference numeral 18.
Upon the upper portion of the stanchion:
element 1, there" is shown a third rack element which consists of a cardboard device 19 or the like?whi'ch is'foldedalong theedge 20" andis so formed as to provide a pair of downwardly extending'notched arms 21. having suitable tongues 22 at their lower ends for extending through suitable slots in-the stanchion member 1-. The notches are adapted for holding paint brushes 0r pencils or the like as indicated by the reference 27.
It will be noted that the upper ends of: the arm 21 extend through suitable'slots in the stanchionmember land suitable notches or slots are provided between the arms andthe rear portion 19 for receiving the stanchion member 1. Likewise, the tongues 22 are separate from the arms 21 by suitable notches or slots for receiving the stanchion member whereby the third rack element may be securely interlocked with the stanchion member 1.
In'Figure 3 isillustrated a rack element 4 somewhat similar to the first described rack element 4. It has the same spire 4, the diverging arms 3 terminating in the shoulders 11. It merely differs from the rack element in that it is smaller and in that the lower edges of the arms 3 are out out to provide a cleft 23 and a step portion 2 1.
InFigure, Lthe-rack element 4 has-been shown assembled witha cardboardbox 25. It might be mentioned that the rack element 4: is assembled in the same manner as the rack element-4' and inits assembled relation,
the shoulder 26 formed between the cleft portion 23 and the step portion 24 fits in the corners of the box with one side of the box extending along the surface of the step portiOl'hQl; It wilhbenotedlthat theybox;25.'also constitutes astanohionmemben througlr which theraekmemben 4: extends and which rack member supports theibox by meansof the spire-4r? and the lower rear surface 4"," as in thefirst: form. It will be appreciatedlthati abox on cover containinghandkerchiefs,,ties,
or similar articlesanay be readily displayedby." simply inserting a. rack-member through either the bottomofjthe box, or, the-lidganda, shallow boxeffec-t may; thus-be secured.
In some instances, where the, box: coven is highly decorated, it may-'bedesirableto'display the decorations;asabackground and it will be obvio.us ,-that1this may-be accomplished bya modified for-m ofzrack element 27 having. a spire l slopingi edges10-and supporting shoulders 11 similar. to those; illustratedin Figure Eaclrwingor arm'28 ofthe rack element isiprovidediwith a rectangularrecess or notch" 29 forming at squared shoulder, 30,

In'Figure 8, there is; shown on a smaller scale a blank 261Whichisstamped or cut-in properv formsothat.whentthe same; is-folded along its verticalcenter line, it ,willformithe rack elementa ]:,inlitsassembled relation.
From, the. foregoing, it will. be, appreciated that a very simple knock-down display rack has been provided which may be readily constructed of cardboard, or the like in avery simple and; cheap manner-,, and which may be used'for displaying merchandiseinastore window on. counters or other suitable, places so that the merchandisemay be,conveniently seen ,andreadily: examinedif desired.
I am awarev that many changes; may be: made, and numerous, details of: construction may be'varied througha wide range without departing from the principles ofthis invention, and I. therefore donotpurpose limiting the patent granted hereon; otherwise than necessitated by the' prior 7 I! claimv as my invention:
1..In a display rackyar stanchion: memberhaving slots and rack members having arms insertable through said slots by sliding and rotatable movement and slidably interlockable therewith.
2. In a display rack, a stanchion member having spaced slits, an article holding mem her having diverging parts, each having a shoulder and a cleft in alinement with said shoulder, said diverging parts extending through said slits and said shoulders and clefts being in alinement with said stanchion member.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name at Chicago, Cook County,
Illinois.
