llhis invention relates to devices for shielding the hand of a person when grasping an implement for manipulating the same, and is particularly designed as a shield or guard for the hand when manipulating a spoon,

fork or other culinary implement in the presence of hotgrease or steam where the unprotected hand is liable to burning or other injury.

13 Broadly, the invention comprehends a covering shield or guard adapted to be arranged over the handle of the culinary implement and which shield or guard is itself provided with a handle upon which the implement handle is designed to be rested whereby both of said handles may be grasped simultaneouslyy for holding the same in associated relation.

The invention furthermore comprehends a device of the character set forth which is so extremely simple in its construction and mode of use, which is inexpensive to manufacture and which is highly efficient in its purpose.

lVith the above recited and other objects in view, reference is had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in

which there isexhibited one example or embodiment of the invention, while the claim defines the actual scope of the same.

3o Figure l is a side view of the shield partly broken away and shown in section to disclose the underlying structure, and illustrating in broken lines an implement handle associated with the shield and grasped by the hand.

Figure 2 is a fragmentary bottom plan view of the forward end of the shield or guard.

Figure 4 is a detail cross sectional View of the shield or guard handle taken approximately on the line indicated at 4-4 in Figure 1.

Referring to the drawings by characters of reference, the shield or guard includes a body 5 of tubular, preferably frusto-conical shape presenting a reduced forward open end 6 and a relatively large rear open end 7. The shield; body is preferably constructed of asbestos or any other suitable heat insulating material. A substantially L-shaped handle 8 is arranged interiorly of the body 5 and includes an axially extending branch 9, the upper surface of which is concaved at 10. The upper concaved surface 10 is preferably 55 disposed in alignment with the inner periphery of the open forward end 6 while the rear extremity of the branch 9 is connected with a radially extending branch 11 anchored or supported in any suitable manner, such as by Q0, the fastening elements 12, within the rear open end 7. The forward end 13 is anchored by suitable -attaching means 14 within the forward open end 6. In order to afford means for hanging or suspending the device, a strip 15 is interposed between the end 13 and the inner periphery of the'forward end of the shield body, and said strip has a projecting portion 16 formed with an aperture 17.

In use, the handle A of a culinary imple- 70. ment is designed to be inserted through the forward open end 6 of the shield body so that said handle A rests upon the branch 9 within the concaved portion 10 thereof, and the user may then grasp the branch 9 and the handle 7.5' A simultaneously to properly associate the shield or guard with the culinary implement whereby the same may be manipulated without fear of burning or injury by grease, steam or heat. The device will be found especially $0 useful in basting meat in a hot oven or in frying bacon, eggs or the like. It is also obvious that the shield may be associated with practically any culinary implement having the usual elongated handle and irrespective @5 of the cross sectional shape of the handle.

Vhat is claimed is:

A hand guard of the character specified comprising a frusto-conical .hollow body presenting a reduced opening at its forward end and a relatively enlarged opening at its rear end, a handle mounted within the hollow body for supporting not only the guard but a kitchen utensil having a shank inserted through i the reduced opening, the handle having a body portion extending longitudinally of the guard and in line with the reduced opening, the handle also having a leg secured to the inner wall of the hollow body adjacent the reduced opening and a second leg secured-to. l@

the inner wall of the hollow body adjacent the enlarged opening, said handle being curved transversely to form a seat for the handle of the kitchen utensil.
