HUMIDIFIER Application filed February 24, 1928. Serial No. 256,738.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in humidifying and oiling devices for internal combustion engines particularly of the variety used in automobiles.
Through the medium of the present invention, oil or water vapor, or a combination of both may be injected into the engine oiylinders, during the running of the motor or aiding internal combustion, 10 consumption, preventing the formation carbon, and maintaining the valves and the upper ends of the pistons properly oiled.
An-important object of this invent-ion resides in the provision of a vaporizing and oiling apparatus for engines that may be installed in automobiles of the combustion enginectype, without considerable expenditure and without alteration of the engine, the cost of installation being shortly overcome by the resultant saving in fuel consumption and the prevention of carbon formation, which necessitates the grinding of thevalvesin the cleaning of the engine cylinders, at frequent intervals during the life of the car.
In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of my invention:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary elevation of that side of an automobile combustion engine equipped with the intake manifold and with my improved device, certain structural features of the automobile being disclosed in cross section.
Figure 2 is a perspective of the supporting unit for the liquid container. Figure 3 is a perspective of the actuating pedal for the valve unit, which unit is arranged upon the toe-board of the automobile, preferably at the outerside of the machine clutch pedal.
Figure 4 is a detail longitudinal section of the air intake and control valve unit.
Figure 5 is a front end elevation of the valve unit.
Figure 6 is a rear edge unit.
Figure 7 is a reducing fue elevation of the detail section through the liquid container and its associated mechanism.
Figure 8 is a fragmentary enlarged secf fuel intake manifold B.

Figure 9 is a substantially on the airs! STATES PATENT @FFICE end of the air inlet Within the detail horizontal section taken line 9 --9 of Figure 8.
Now having particular reference to the drawings, there is disclosed in Figure 1 an automobile engine designated generally by disclosed in Figure 1,
l the reference character A, including the usual As fragmentarily the engine is associated in the usual manner with an automobile, C
designating the machine dash board, and D the toe board thereof. The invention per se, consists of a suitable capacity container 5,
preferably of glass,
so that the contents of the container may be viewed, when the hood of the machine is raised.
Arranged upon the upper open container 5 is a metallic cap a normally plugged filler opening 7.
end of this 6, formed with Associated with the container cap is an air supply. and ejector structure including a T-union, the side notch of which has threaded within its lower enda collar 9, that is projected through an opening in cap 6, after which a sleeve the top wall of the 10 is threaded onto the end of the collar proj ecting into this cap,
the'lower end of tlus collar bein with a screen 11.
g provided Arranged within the sleeve beneath the screen and a retaining ring 12 is a suitable filtering material Threaded within the opposite ends of the longitudinal portion of the T-coupling 8 are nipples 1414, while ends of these nipples attached to the outer are air pipes 15-15. Threaded within the inner end of the right hand nipple 14 is' a tube 16, having a small bore outlet nozzle 17 formed or with the free end thereof. This associated nozzle extends into the adjacent nipple 14, the inner end of the bore of which is of large diameter,
as clearly disclosed in Figure 7.
Having communication with t and depending therefrom and the collar he tube 16 extending 9 and into the container 5 is an air supply pipe 19, for said container, the lower end of this pipe terminating at a point just above the bottom of said container and being formed at its lower en 6. with liqblock as.
The container 5 is rigidly secured in vertical position to the inner face of the automobile dash board C, by a supporting structure, designated generally by the reference character 24:, the same preferably consisting of a pair of clamps 2525 secured in spaced parallel position by a connecting strip 26, that is equipped with an outwardly extending bolt 27, for attachment through an opening in the dash board C as clearly disclosed in'Figure 1. Arranged upon the toe board D of the machina and preferably atthe outer side of the machine clutch pedal is an air intake and control valve unit, consisting of a block casting 28, preferably. This block casting 28 is formed at its inner end with a relatively large 30 air intake pocket 29, within which is arranged a suitable air filtering medium 30. Extending longitudinally from the center of theair intake pocket 29 is an air passage 31',
that communicates at its inner end with a vertical opening 32, formed in the block, as disclosed, the upper end of this opening being normally closed by a cap 31. At the rear end of the block 28 and beneath the air passage 31 is an outlet passage 31, to which is atso tached the air pipe 15, fixed to that nipple 1a equipped with the tube 16. The lower end of the opening 32 communicates with the passage 33 through the medium of a conical shaped opening 3%, within which is normally e5 arranged a conical valve 35, carried by the 'lower end of a valve stem 36, repiprocable within the opening 32 and through an opening in the opening end cap 31, while surrounding this stem is an expansible coil spring 37, placed between thevalve 35 and the cap 31, for normally maintaining the valve communication with the engine intake mani-- fold B, as clearly illustrated in Figure 1.
In practice, oil or water or a combination of .both is disposed within the container 5 a and during the operation of the engine,-when the lever 38 is operated to open the valve 35, the suction within the manifold B will draw air through the passages in, the block 28 and eventually to the tube 16, By reason of the restricted outlet of this tube, there will be a back pressure therein, causing the air to pass downwardly to the pipe 19, from whence it is discharged into the fluid within the container 5. The air passing from the tube will cause a suction within the container 5, by drawing the air upwardly through the fluid, causing the saturation of the same, with the water, oil, or combination of both, from whence it will eventually be taken into the engine for producing the result heretofore described.
It will this be seen that have provided a highlynovel, simple and extremely useful and eiiicientlyoperated vaporizing and oiling attachment for automobile internal combustion engines. Even though I have herein shown and described the invention as consisting of certain detail structural features, it is nevertheless to be understood that changes may be made therein without afiectin the spirit or score of the appended claim. aving thus described my invention, what I claim as new is:
In a device of the character described comprising a fluid container, a hollow body communicating with the container, an air tube projecting into said body and having its inner end formed to provide a constricted outlet, a pipe depending from the said tube with its lowerend terminating adjacent the bottom of said fluid container, a pressure responsive valve at the lower end of the pipe, and a connection between the hollow body and the usual engine intake manifold, whereby the suction of the engine will draw vapor from the container and mix the same with air sucked through the air tube by the action of the said engine. 1
In testimony whereof I aflix; mv si ature.
- FRANCIS J. MOLAUG LIN.

The upper end of the stem 36 is loosely connected to one end of a suitable foot lever 38 that is pivoted to the top side of the block 28, the outer end thereof being formed or equippedwith afoot pedal'39, so that adem pression thereof-will raise the stem 336 and consequently open the passage between the opening 32 and the outlet passage 33 of said- The'other air pipe 15 attached to the oppo-
