Description

, Patented Feb. 4, 1930 1 UNITED STATES,
FRED FOX, OF I STAUN TON, INDIANA ELL srurnmonox Application filed May 22,
I s .This invention relates to improvements'in stufiing boxes and contemplates the provision of aiseparable box which owing to its relative association may be readily. and easily I placed on pumps, engines and valves and the. I like without removing the shafts from their bearingsin order to slide the usual and conventional form of stuffing box thereon. 7
Another object of the invention is the provision of interfitting joints upon this novel form of stufling box and which are so relatively associated as will be rigidly held upon the shaft and held against accidental displacement and when so associated will be so rigidly secured as will function as an integral portion of the body upon which it is attached.
7 With the above and other objects in View,
Y the invention further includes the following novel features and details of construction, to
- be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and r pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a vertical section taken through .25 a body and showing the manner in which this packing gland is attached thereto. 7 I
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a top plan View of the upper portion of the packing gland when separated.
.Figurel is a side elevation of the upper portions of the 'companlon'portions formlng the packing gland.
. Figure '5 is a section taken on line 5-5 of Figure 2. r
' 5 Referring to the drawing in detail, wherein like characters'of reference denote corresponding parts, the reference character 10 indicates a cylinder head and 11 a pump shaft extending therethrough, the cylinder head 10 having a packing box 12 provided therein so that the packing 13provided therein may be placed around the pump shaft. The usual studpins or bolts 14 have been provided and these carry securing nuts or other securing 1 elements 15 upon the outer ends thereof in order that the packing gland, which will be hereinafter described; may be drawn tlghtly into place with respect to the cylinder head 10 and upon the pump shaft 11.
1925. Serial No. 32,229. I I
i The packing glandais:formed of.two@companioni partsras :indicatedat .16 ,and a .17 ire-v spectively, each having neckportions 18tand 19..extending; centrally rand upwardly there? from. a The: .lowerends ,of these necks. 18. and 1%) care fitted .within. garcuate :shaped- {cutout portions provided centrally intthe, companion members .16 and. 17 andinclude? semircircular longitudinally extending channel portions on. bor,es..thercin when soassembledfonthe reception .and housing of the. pump shaft,11 therein? The companion member .16. includes a downwardly beveled dove-tail slot22O there-,- 111,;Whll6tl1,6 companion member 17, includes an oppositely .inclined dove-tail 21in order, that. these, companiongmembers 16 iand 17 when arrange d 'in tneir interfitting relation with respect to the dove-tail connection will be rigidly held together and prevent their displacement upon an outward thrust, owing to the relative association of these companion members 16 and 17 as clearly illustrated in Figure 5 of the drawing.
In order to so provide connecting means upon the upper ends of the necks 18 and 19, I provide slots 22 upon the opposite sides of the bore or channel of the neck 18 while the neck 19 has included upon its corresponding side a pair of downwardly extending dogs 23 which are arranged in spaced relation to the inner sides of the neck 19 and which are adapted to fit. within the slots 22 provided in the upper end of the neck 18 when so associating the dove-tail 21 on the companion member 17 into the dove-tail slot 20 provided in the companion member 16 in order that the companion members 16 and 17 as Well as the necks 18 and 19 carried thereby will be associated in one operation upon the pump shaft'll and when so tightening up upon the fastening elements inthe form of nuts 15 carried upon the outer ends'of the studs or bolts and the like 14 will cause the outer ends of the necks 18 and 19 to engage the packing 13 arranged within the packing box 12 within a cylinder head 10 and around the pump shaft 11 It will thus be noted from the foregoing description and accompanying drawing that this invention provides an exceedingly useful and advantageous stufiing box which will undoubtedly prove of great value when used upon wells, engines, pumps and the like owing to its separable connection in order that bearings and the like do not have to be removed from a shaft in order to associate this packing gland thereon.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction, and the right is hereinreserved to make such changes as" properly fall Within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention What, is claimed is:
A separable stufling box glandlcompris ing companion interfitting members, one of the members being provided With a doWn- Wardly and inwardly beveled dove-tailed slot, a dove-tail oppositely beveled to that of the slot lockingly engaged Within the slot to rigidly hold the members together to prevent displacement incident to outward thrust terminally and relatively thereof, necks of semi-circular groove formation projected at right-angles from the members and disposed in uxtaposition, one of the necks being provided With notches Within one end thereof,
and spaced lugs carried upon the companion neck being adapted forreception within the notches when the members are j oined.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature."
