My invention relates to an' improved device for use particularly in connection with rope or cable. slings and has for one of its objects the'provision of a device which is so con-. structed and arranged as to provide a firm and self-tightening grip on the sling at or adjacent the point in the sling where one end of the loop thereof bears upon the suspending strands.

Between the anges 5 the body member is slotted at 6, this slot receiving a slide'7. The slot 6 extends in the direction of pull on the device.
Integral with the slide 7 or at least rigidly secured thereto is a wedge shaped clamping member 8 adapted to cooperate with the flanges 5 on the block 4.
Secured to the slide 7 and hence to the clamp member 8, but on the side of the body member 4 opposite the clamp member is a member 9, the lower end of which is provided with a "hook 10, this hook preferably extending transversely of the device.
The upper end of the body member4 is shaped as shown at 11 to be readily engaged by the hook of the crane'or other hoisting apparatus used in connection with the device.
In use the sling 1 may be placed about the load 12 in the usual way, the loop 3 being passed through the loop 2 as shown on Fig. 2, and the latter hooked over the hook 10 on the member 9. The loop 3 is pulled upwardly until the sling is drawn as tightly as possible about the load, and the suspending strands thereof placed in the space between the wedge slipped clamping member 8 and the flanges 5 on the block 4.
ilVhen the crane or other hoisting apparatu's is'connected to the hook 11 it will be apparent that the block 4. will tend to move upwardly with respectto the wedge member 8 and consequently the suspending sides of the sling designated 13 and 14 will be securely clamped between the sides of the wedge and the flanges 5.
It is to be noted that the sides or faces 15 of the flanges 5 adjacent the wedge member 8 are inclined and that the sides of the clamping wedge 8 are inclined in the same general direction, as indicated at 1 6, but at'a different angle from/the inclination of the faces 15 of the flanges 5. I find that this gives me an I increased grip of the clamping wedge b on the sides 13 and 14 of the sling. However, the shape of the space between the wedge faces and the inside of the flanges 5 may be varied as I have indicated in Iigs. 4 and 5.
In Fig. 4 the sides or faces 15 of the flanges 5 adjacent the sides 16 f the member 8 are straight, i. e., parallel to, the outer faces of the flanges 5. Likewise the sides 16 of the clamping wedge 8 are parallel with the faces '15.

" making the inside faces concave, the radius "of this concave portion being approximately equal to that of one of the strands of the sling. Likewise the clamping wedge 8 has been con caved on its faces 16, the radius of these concave faces being also approximately that of one of the strands of the sling.
" *These are various formations which may be employed in making up my, device but in all cases I retain the essential feature of providing on one face of the member 4 a wedge formation for clamping the sides of the sling, means being provided whereby when tension is placed upon the device the wedge will tighten upon the strands of the sling.
In 'Fig. 6 I'have illustrated a still further 'modification of my invention in which I have provided an apparatus which is particularly designed for use with a slingwhieh is not of the endless type. In this embodiment of my invention one end of the sling is brought up to one side of the hook 10, a half or a full turn being taken around the member 9 and then led upwardly and placed between the wedge 8 and flanges 5 on the block 4. In passing upwardly to this position one strand of the-sling is passed under a hook 17 pro- .vided ion the member 9. The other endof the sling is aroundthe load and placed be- .tween the wedge 8 and the other flange 5.-
Tension on the device will wedge both leads of thel sling between the clamping wedge 8 and the flanges, the one-half turn taken about the member 9 and the hook 17 functioning to hence bf the wedge 8 in a manner analogous l to the booking of the bight 2 over the hook 10 in the other fornrof my invention above described. i p g K In all the forms of my fore, it will be seen that I have provided a plate or block having converging flanges or theirequivalent on one face, means being provided between these flanges for pinching or clamping the material-ofthe sling between this means and the flanges. It will be seen also that the pinching or clamping means is provided with a hook or its equivalent by invention, thereslim! to hoisting apparatus comprising in combination a body member adapted to be attached to the hoisting apparatus, a clamping member carried thereby and cooperating therewith and adapted to clamp the sling between it and the body member, and means carried by theclamping member for attachment to the free end of the sling, whereby a pull on the sling will increase the clamping action of the clamping member.

Sling apparatus comprising in combination a flanged body member, a clamping member disposed between the} flanges on said body member, said clamping member having a sliding bearing in the body member, one portion of the sling engaging the clamping member only, the suspending strands of the sling being gripped between lthe clamping mem ber and body member, whereby increase of tension on the sling increases theclamping action on the sling.

Sling apparatus comprising incombination a flanged body member adapted for attachment to a hoisting device, a wedge-shaped clamping member cooperating, with the flanges of the bodyinember, said clamping member extendingthrougli, the body mem ber and having a sling-engaging portion on said extension.

10. Sling apparatus comprising in combi-' nation a body member having converging J flanges on one facethereof, said flanges extending in the general direction of pull on the sling when the device is in use, a clamping member on the flanged face of the body member having converging sides cooperating with said flanges, said body member being provided with a slot through the same and extending in line with the pull on the device, a portion of the clamping member passing through and having a bearing in said slot,
said clamping member being provided with a downwardly extending hooked portion for engagement with the sling at the side of the body member opposite the flanges.
11. A sling apparatus comprising in combination a body member having converging flanges on one face thereof, a clamping memher on the flange face of the body member lgying converging sides cooperating with i said flanges, said body member and clamping member being movable relatively, means carried by one of said members for attachment thereof to hoisting apparatus, a hook for connection to a sling carried by the other of said I members, and a sling having a portion sep arate from the hook engagement portion clamped between said body member and clamping member whereby the lifting of a' load carried in said slin will efiect an increase in the clam ing 0% the sling between the clamping mem er and body member.
