Patented Feb. 4, 1930 IUIw 'EI STATES PATENT, OFFICE 'MA'URICE E. BOSLEY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIs, ASSIGNOR TO THE D. w. BOSLEY COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINoIs, A CORPORATION or ILLINOIS WEATHER STRIP Application filed December 27, 1926. SerialNo. 157,089.
' {The present invention 'relatespto an improvement in weather-stripping or strips for sealing the space between movable; closures such as windows and doors. a f
The ina'inobject of the invention is the provision of a waterproof weather-strip which will completely seal the jointure in which it is positioned, which will withstand a maximum amount of wear, which will have 1-oa neat appearance in use and which may be easily and economically manufactured.
Another important object of the invention is the provision of a weather-strip proof against deterioration by rotting of eonstitucut materials."
Numerous other Objects of the invention will be apparent as it is better understood from the following description, which, taken in connection with the accompanying drawdiscloses a preferred embodiment thereof.
Referring to the drawings: Figure 1 is an elevation of a weather-strip embodying my invention, parts of which are ,2 shown broken away to disclose the interior construction thereof; and d Fig, 2 isia section taken substantially on line'22 in Fig.1.
7 The use of weather-stripping is thought to so be sufficiently well known to need no explanation and. a description thereof will not be made.
I To illustrate my invention I have shown a weather-strip consisting of a core 11 and an enclosing sleeve 12. The core is of cotton or similar resilient packing material and consists of a suflicient number of strands twisted to make a rope of desired diameter. The sleeve 12 is a strip of material treated to l 1 1 render the'fabric thereof moisture-proof, and
is of sufiicient width that when it is closely wrapped around the core 11,'the edge strips 13and 14 of sleeve 12 overlap and are ar- 2 ranged adjacent to and parallel with each j other to form an outstanding flange 12. A strip of material 15 is folded longitudinally at 15 and embraces the outstanding edges 13 and 14. The sides 16 and-17 of the folded strip 15 lie parallel with and exteriorly adj a- "cent to the extending flange 12. The edges 18 and 19 of the sides 16 and 17 are folded its sleeve. The seam also secures the folded strip 15 to the flange and provides a sturdy web 23 projecting from the body of the weather-strip. Other seams 21 and 22 parallel with seam 20 are provided in the web as shown to give added strength.
The projectingjweb 23 is of quadruple thickness comprising strips 13, 14, 16 and 17 stitched together by seams 20, 21 and 22. The outer strips'16 and 17 are integral with each other and a neat folded appearance is presented at'the outer edge of the web. The edges 18, 19 ofstrip 15 are folded under and stitched in place for the sake of appearance and-to give extra strength atthe base of the web. This construction provides an unusually durable web forsecuring the strip in Operat'ive position to a closure member and creates maximum strengthwhere it is most needed. V V 7 It is thought that the invention and many of its" attendant advantages will be understood from the foregoing description, and it will be apparent that many changes may be made in the form, construction and arrangementof the parts without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention or sacrificing all of its material advantages, the form herein described being merely a preferred embodiment thereof. 7
v I" claim:
