Patented Jan. 28, 1930 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE WILLIAM G. STEVENS, OF AKRON, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE FIRESTONE IIRE AND RUBBER COMPANY, OF AKRON, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO DEVICE FOR REMOVING STOCK FROM BIAS GUT'I'ERS Application filed August 20, 1925. Serial No. 51,518.
This invention relates to devices for removing stock from bias cutters such as are used in the preparation of rubberized fabric for use in building tires.
Heretofore the general practice in rubber plants has been either to provide a table near the front of the cutter on which liner books are mounted, whereby two workmen may pick the cut strips from the cutter and place them between the liner leaves of the book, or to provide a table having liner reels thereon whereby two workmen may pick the stock from the cutter and place it on the table, other workmen operating the liner reels to reel the cut stock therein.
The present invention has for its general object an automatic device adapted to be actuated by the cutter operating mechanism for reeling the stock directly from the cutter,
A particular object of the invention 18 to provide a portable device of the kmd described adapted to be positioned before any cutter and to be readily connected thereto to be operated thereby.
The foregoing and other objects are obtained by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings and described below. It is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific construction shown and described. it
Of the accompanying drawmgs:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a vertical cutter of known type and a take-off device embodying the invention operatively arranged in relation thereto;
Figure 2 is a front elevation thereof; and
Figure 3 is a detail elevation, partly in section, of the reel driving means.
Referring to the drawings, 10 indicates, in general, a standard vertical bias cutter to which stock 11 may be supplied in any suitable manner and having a feed roll 12 therein over which the stock is trained and which is adapted to suspend the same in vertical relation, as at 13, for operation of the cutter thereon. The cutter comprises a knife (not shown) carried by a cable 14 adapted to be reciprocated along a path at an angle of 45 or thereabout to the edges of the fabric 11.
Cable 14 is driven by a drum 16 actuated alternately in opposite directions by a driving mechanism, indicated generally at 17, which is also arranged to drive a crank 18 having a connecting rod 19 adjustably connected thereto so that its throw may be varied and connected to a stock feeding rack 20 meshed with a pinion 21 adapted to drive drum 12. At 22 the usual clamp is shown for clamping the stock during the cutter operation, this being actuated in the well-known manner by the driving mechanism 17.
The take-01f device of the present invention includes a table 23 mounted on rollers 24 and 25 and provided with a slidable pin 26 adapted to be urged into an aperture 27 in the floor in front of cutter 10 against the action of a spring 28 by means of a cam 29 and operating lever 30.
Table 23 has thereon a supply reel 31 of liner adapted to be drawn upwardly about a roller 32 on the end of table 23 which extends adjacent to cutter 10 and then backwardly over the surface of the table away from cutter 10 onto a wind-up reel 33 journaled invertical slotted bearings 34 mounted on table 23 and resting on a driving roller 35 ournaled on a shaft 36 which is journaled on table 23.
Roller 35 has secured thereto the drum 37 of a ball clutch 38 which is keyed onto shaft 36. Shaft 36 has secured thereon a sprocket 39 over which is trained a chain 39 adapted to be driven by a sprocket 4O journaled on table 23. Sprocket 40 is connected to a gear 41 which meshes with a rocking sector 42 journaled on table 23 and having detachably connected thereto a connecting rod 43 adapted to be detachably connected to a link 44 adjustably connected to crank 18 whereby crank 18 is adapted to actuate both feeding drum 12 and wind-up reel 33 to provide that an amount of stock will be taken up by reel 33 between each cutting action equal to that fed by drum 12 to the cutter.
The operation of the device will be readily understood, rocking of sector 42 in one direction by connecting rod 43 (when the knife is in cutting operation) being ineffective to drive drum 35, while rocking of the sector 42 by rod 43 in the other direction (between cutting operations of the knife) will be efl'ective to drive drum 35 through ball clutch 37. The stock which is not entirely out in two by the cutter passes downwardly therefrom onto the liner on table 23 which is intermittently drawn over the table onto reel 33.
Modifications of the invention may be resorted to without departing from the spirit thereof or the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A take-01f device for use with a vertical bias cutter includin a stock feeding mechanism, said device eing arranged in front thereof to receive stock issuing therefrom as a continuous web of incompletely severed strip, and having means for driving a stockreeeiving liner thereover, said means being connected to and 0 rated by the stock feeding mechanism of t e cutter.
Q. A take-off device for use with a vertical bias cutter having stock feeding means there in including a crank, said device being arranged in front of said bias cutter and comprising means for driving a stock-receiving mer thereover to receive stock therefrom as a continuous web of incompletely severed strips, and a connecting rod extending from said means to said crank.
