Be it known that I, WILLIAM G. COOK, of

'-Jersey Uity Heights, in the county of Hudof the same, reference being had to the accom panyin'g drawing, which forms part of this specification.

This invention relates to gravitating sash fastenings or holders pivoted to the sash, and locking with or between stops on the windowframe.

The invention consists in a combination of a pivoted gravitating double catch having reverse notches on its opposite ends, a catchholder carrying the same and attached tothe sash, and a series `ot' irregularly-arranged stops on the window -framet'or arresting either end of the catch to hold the sash up or down and closed or open, as required.

Figure 1 represents aavindow-frame having upperand lower sashes, with my improvelnent applied to the ylower sash. Fig. 2 is a vertical section in a plane at right angles to the window, with the lower sash as stopped and locked 'by my improved device in difterent positions. Fig. 3 is a side view, and Fig. 4 a horizontal section in part, both upon a larger scale, of a Window-sash having my improved sash-i'astener applied.

A is the window-frame, having a raising and lowering bottom sash, and an upper sash. Secured to the face of the lower sash, on its one side, is a sash-catch carrier, D. This carrierserves to support in a swinging manner, as by a pivot, b, a double catch, G, having said pivot, which may either be fast to the catchor not, arranged intermediately of the length of it. Such double catch is supported by the carrier D, so that it is restricted by a back rest, c, from swinging but slightly from an upright position, Aand it is furthermore provided with a handle, d, which opera-tes also' as a weight to pitch and hold the catch in a stopping and locking position with studs or stops g on the window-frame.

The two ends of the double catch are notched or'cut away, as at e e, which notches are in a reverse relation with-each other, and the stops g on the window-frame are arranged out'of line with one another, or, where more than two of such. stops are used, so that the lower series of said stops will be out ot' line with theupper series thereof, in. order that the reverse notched Vends ot' the catch will lock, respectively, with the stops to 1hold the sash open or closed, or in anylintermediate position, according to the number and disposition of the stops.

In Fig. 2 of the drawing the lower sash is represented, lin full lines, as locked when closed by the upper notched end of the double catch falling under one of the stops g, and is, `fnrther represented in dotted lines as locked when partly 4open or raised by the lower notched end of the double catch falling over another of the stops g. .t

The stops with which the lower notched endV of the double catch-lock are arranged closer to the sash than those 'stops with which the upper -notched arms ot' the catch,l for the double purpose 'of insuring the automatic locking of the reverse ends of the double catch, by means of its weight or handle d, with said stops, respectively, and ot' allowing the catch C, when lit'ted by the handle into an upright position, passingin front of the one stop or series ot' stops g, and behind the other, when moving the sash B up or down. On removing the linger, however, from the finger-piece or handle d, the latter innuediately drops, and thc catch is adjusted into an inclined position, and is free to swing away from any stop g it may come in contact with by the front face of its upper arm, or back ot' its lower arm, according to the direction inwhich the sash is being moved, and so that, after said catch has thus passed or rubbed over and swung away from said stop, its .weight or handle d will automatically throw it into lock with said stop.

I claim'- The combination of the pivoted gravitating double catch C, having opposite end notches .e e, arranged in reverse relation to each other,

the catch-carrier D attached to the sash, and the stops g on the window-frame, arranged out of vertical line with each other, substantially as shown and described.-
