Description
v G.D.,CARLETON. ATTACHIITG PUMFBARRELS TO THEIR BASES.
I No.174.47 5.
Paaented March 7,1876.
NJETERS, FHOTO-UTHOSRAFHER, WASHINGTON. D C.
' which embody my invention.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIGE GEoRGE D. GARLETON, OF NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN ATTACHING PUMP-BARRELS TO THEIR BASES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. [74,475, dated March 7, 1876; application filed December 1, 1875. v
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEoRGE D. OARLETON, of New Britain, in'the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain I central vertical section of a portion of a pumpbarrel, clamping devices, and pump-base,
Fig. 2 is a detached view of the under side of the annular clamp; and Fig. 3is a detached view of the lower end of the pump-barrel and the detachable lugs.
A designates the lower end of a pump-barrel, which is provided with a groove or circular recess, a, shown in Fig. 1, and the depth of which recessis indicated by the broken circle in Fig. In this groove to I fit two or more detachable lugs,'b b, the same being so shaped as to.project outward from the bar'- rel and so fitted as to have but little or no vertical play in said groove, but so as to be easily detached therefrom when desired. Bdesignates an annular clamp provided with ears 0 0, having bolt-holes corresponding to the boltholes ofthe base 0. The annularclampB islarge enough so that the lower end of the barrel A will readily pass through it, and upon its under side it is provided with an annular recess, 01. The base Omay be of any desired style. I prefer to make the groove a in the barrel A extend wholly around said barrel for convenience in manufacturing, and to have the detachable lugs in two or three pieces only, and extending around the barrel. But this construction is not essential, as two or more short recesses and corresponding detachable lugs would answer the purposes of my invention.
In the drawing only a part of the barrel A is shown, and, therefore, it does not appear that the annular clamp cannot he slipped on from the top; but, in fact, the upper part of the barrel is" larger than its base, and, also, the spout projects therefrom, so that, even if it were of the same size as its base, the annular clamp cannot be put on from the top, and it is evident that if made so as to engage withthe lugs it could not he slipped on at the bottom unless the lugs were made detachable.
The device is put together as follows, to wit: The lugsb b are detached from the barrel and the annular clamp slipped over the lower end of the barrel, after which the lugs are inserted within, the groove 0.. The barrel is then placed with, its end Within the baseO and resting upon packing or outer edge of the valve-leather, as shown in Fig. 1. Bolts f f are then passed through the ears 0 c and base 0, and the parts are firmly secured together upon tightening the nuts of the bolts, which causes the clamp to bear upon the lugs and hold the barrel rigidly within the base.
It will be observed that the clamping devices and pump-barrel, as described, form a complete swivel, so that the barrel may, by loosening the nuts on the bolts, be turned with its spout in any desired position, and there se-' cured.
I claim as my invention- The combination of the barrel A, detachable lugs b b, annular clamp B, and base 0, all substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
GEORGE 1). OARLETON.
