Description
Jan. 21, 1930. H. N. CORDSEN 1,744,682 7 SHADE BRACKET Filed March 22, 1928 .Wj d."
-INVENTOR- ATTORNEY Patented Jan. 21, 1930' principal object of the invention being UNITED HENRY N. CORDSEN, or KANSAS cr'rY, mrssonni, ass reivon fro srmnennss SHADE COMPANY, or WICHI'IA, KANSAS, A CORPORATION SHADE nimcxn'r OF KANSAS Application filed March 22, 1928. Serial No. 263,686. I
My invention relates to roller-supported webs such as maps and window shades, and more particularly to means for operating the roller of a device of such character, the to rotate the roller by a cord frictionally engaged therewith, to retain the cord in rollerrotating relation, and to support a cordretaining member from the roller-supporting bracket.
In accomplishing these and other objects of my invention I have provided improved details of structure, the preferred forms of which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a window equipped with a shade embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a detail enlarged perspective view of a bracket and one end of a roller in disassembled relation, illustrating the application of a roller-actuatorand retaining member thereto. r f
Fig. 3 isa similar view in detail vertical central section, illustrating the members in functioning relation.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged perspective view of the bracket and clip disassembled.
Referring more in detail to the drawings:
1 designates a window having a side casing 2, 3 an awning web wound on a roller 4, and 5 a bracket whereby one end of the awning roller, which is adapted to receive operating means later described, is supported from the side casing 2, the opposite end of the roller being rotatably supported by suitable means in the opposite side of the window.
The bracket 5 comprises a plate 6 adapted to lie vertically along the casing having a slot 7 in its upper end for moving the plate over a nail 8 fixed in the casing adjacent the lintel, and an opening 9 in its lower portion to receive a nail 10 for fixing the bracket to the casing. Projectingfrom the bracket is a ledge member 11 comprising preferably outbent ortions of the plate having a vertical soc et 12 to receive a spindle 13 on the illustrated end of the shade roller. The material of the ledge portion is preferably in- I bent and arcuate adjacent the socket to provide a journal member 14 to support the spindle to prevent wear thereof. The roller is, therefore, loosely rotatably supported in the window, and it is further provided with a reduced and peripherally roughened and preferably toothed portion 15 adjacent the spindle comprising a ratchet member for frictional engagement by a cord 16 adapted to run over the toothed member for rotating the rollerto wind or unwind the web thereon. A washer or guard 17 fixed on the end of the roller, cooperates with the unreduced end thereof to retain the cord in its channel-like location on the reduced roughened portion.
I further provide means for guiding the cord and retaining it in engagement with the ratchet-like member 15, comprising a clip-like member 18 having a body portion 19, and arms 20 and 21 provided with similar arcuate and grooved cars 22 shaped conformably to the cord, the arms and bodypo'rtions being resilient and adapted for tensionally engaging the cord and the roller to retain the cord'in position on the toothed member.
The curved and grooved ears of the clip are spaced substantially by the diameter of the toothed member, and are related to each other for suitable and desired positioning over different areas of the toothed member and preferably the two ears are adapted to be diametrically oppositely positioned on the toothed member. The body member of the clip is adapted to be engaged withthe bracket, and for this purpose the lateral ends 23 and 24 of the vertical face portion 25 of the'ledge member are preferably bent inwardly to produce wings extending over the lower shelf 26 produced by the aforesaid outbending of the plate to form the ledge member, the inner vertical edges of the inbent wings 23 and 24 being'inset from the rear face of the plate'to provide a seat on said against vertical movement by the uncut extending lateral ends of the ledge member.
The arms, further, are bent inwardly towards each other at points spaced from the face of the ledge member, to provide a recess 27 to receive the washer 17 when the roller is mounted on the bracket, the ears being produced exteriorly to said recess-forming bends.
The fixing of the bracket on the window, therefore, retains the clip in engagement with the bracket, the arcuate arms of the clip extending at right angles to the casing in position to receive the cord and engage the same with the roller.
The lower end ofthe plate 6 is bent outwardly to provide a stop member for checking upward movement of a window sash that may be slidable in the window.
The device being provided as described, the roller is freely rotatable on its support and can easily be rotated by the cord frictionally engaged with the toothed periphery of the ratchet member adjacent the end of the roller. The clip retains the cord in ratchet-engaging position and tends to enhance the frictional engagement of the cord with the roller, while the cord is sufficiently freely slidable along the inside surfaces of the rooved arms.
T e en agement of the body portion and arms of t e clip with the bracket stabilizes the clip against strains put thereon by anular portions of the cord when the roller is Eeing operated. Since the body portion of the clip is loosely retained between thewings and the casing, said body portion is bendable, and therefore its resiliency is utilizable for cooperation with the resiliency of. the clip arms to promote convenient and eflicient functioning of the clip in yieldingly retaining the cord in engagement with the roller.
The roller may easily be removed from its supporting bracket, and the arms of the clip may be bent back to admit a fresh cord to the roller.
