This invention relates to an attachment-for sewing machines particularly adapted for feeding tape to forma French binding for shoes.
An object of the invention is to provide an attachment whereby tape from a continuous row may be fed to the stitching point for attachment to the edge of shoe uppers, which attachment is adapted to wipe out the upper .10 edge of the tape and to prevent it fromcoming in contact with the needle in the stitching operation.
Another object of the invention is to provide an attachment of the kind described having an adjustable device for holding the top margin of the tape above the stitching point, said attachment being adapted for adj ustment to tape of difierent widths.

widths. e In the embodiment of the invention illustrated in the drawing the attachment is shown in association with a sewing machine having a top arm 1 illustrated fragmentarily in Figs. 1 and 2. A needle bar 2 carrying a'needle 3 is mounted in the arm 1 for vertical reciprocation. The arm 1 has connected therewith a bracket 4:. An arm 5 is removably attached to the bracket a, said arm 5 curving inwardly and downwardly. of the roller comprises a serrated face 8. The roller 7 is mounted upon its shaft in a forwardly inclined position as best shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing.
The mechanism for feeding the tape includes an arm 9 removably attached to the bracket 4, said arm extending rearwardly and member that includes a plate 10 having an eye 11 attached to its rear edge, said plate extending at the back of the attachment and communicating with a tape feed tube 12 that extends across the front face of the presser r ller. The tape feed tube comprises a front and rear wall joined together so that said walls lie close together and so that the vertical dimension is sufficient to accommodate, at its inlet end, tape of varying widths fed to the stitching point. The forward throat ofthe tube is deflected slightly outwardlyat 13 for turning the lower marginal edge of the tape to meet the surface of the shoe upper in a plane parallel therewith at the stitching point, in cooperation with the beveled wall of the presser roller. The forward throat of the tape tube 12 has a single wall extension 14,
the upper marginal edge of-which is slightly notched at 15, as shown in Fig. 2. of the drawing. The purpose of the extension 14 is to hold the upper marginal edge of the tape out of the path of the needle.
. In order to accommodatethe device for feeding different widths of tape, an adjustable member isprovided to engage the upper marginal edge of the tape as it leaves the throat of'the tape feed tube. This member comprises a stem 16 mounted in a bracket 17 attached to thefront face of the upper portion of the arm 9. An expansion spring 18 is mounted on the stem 16"between the lower face of the bracket 17 and a flange 19 on the stem. An adjusting nut 20 is mounted over a threaded end of the stem for raising the stem in the bracket17 against the tendency of the spring 18 to depress the stem. Thus, thestem may be raised and lowered by'the operator. When the proper adjustment of the stem has been. attained, it maybe setvin position by a set screw 21 threaded into'the face of the bracket 17 and against the stem.

A nut 24 threads over the extremity of the stud 22 so that a slight longitudinal adjustment of the bracket 17 may be effected. Below'the flange 19 is an extension of the stem constituting an angular arm-25, the lower portion of which extends rearwardly and downwardly to a point below the upper edge of the tape feed tube. The extremity 26 of" the arm 25 is bifurcated and is inclined inwardly to an apex, clearly shown in Fig. 4 of the drawing. The space between the armsformingthe bifurcated extremity constitutes a channel-through which the uppermarginal edge ofthe tape passes as-it' is fed through the clev-ice. By varying the tension ofthe spring 18, the elevation of the seat of the channel fo'rrnediirthe bifurcated extremity 26 may be'accurately adjusted. Therefore, when the tape of varyingwidths is used, the pressure onthe upper marginal edge thereof may be accurately adjusted" so that the lower marginal edge of the tape is forced into the lower channelin the tape feedingtube, toward the marginal edge thereof, along an accurately positioned line in respect of the needle which passes through the tape as it leaves the deflected plortion 13 of the throat of the tube. Theextremity 26 also serves to hold the upper marginal edgeof'the tape in a vertical positionand to prevent it from curling inwardly and therefore out of 'the path of the needle The device is so constructed asto accurately lay the tape at the stitching point, regardlessof the' nature'of the contour ofthe shoeupper to which the tape is to be attached.
