' This invention relates tohinged lasts and has for its object the provision of means for retaining in close contact at all times the adj acent curved surfaces on the two parts thereof and taking, up the wear on these surfaces after the last has been in use for a considerable time.
This object is attained by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawing.
For the purpose of illustrating the invention,.one preferred form thereof is illustrated in the drawings, this form having been found to give satisfactory and reliable results, although it is to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which the invention consists can be variously arranged and organized, and the invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and organization of these instrumentalities as herein shown and described except as required by the scope of the appended claims.

Figure 2 represents a longitudinal section of a portion of same on line 2, 2, on Fig. 1.

In the drawings, 10 isthe fore part of a divided last having in its rear face a curved depression 11 extending transversely thereof.
Fitted to this depression 11 is a projection 12 formed upon the front face of the heel part 13.
The fore part 10 has a vertical slot 14 in its rear end and a similar slot 15 is formed in the front end of the heel part 13, these slots 14, 15 being in alinement.
Disposed in these slots 14, 15 is a hinge element 16 consisting of a bar with holes 17 and 18 in the opposite ends thereof to re 50 ceive dowels 19 and 20 positioned respectively in the fore part 10. and heel part 13 and extend transversely thereof.
One of these holes, as forinstance the hole 17, has around dowel orpin 19 extending" therethrough and about the axis of this pin or dowel t e bar .16 is adapted to move in shortening or lengthening the last.
The hole 18 is preferably elongated as shown in the drawings. q
i The dowel 20 is of novel construction hav- 6Q ing a recess 21 in. its periphery and extend ing .lengthwise thereof with overhanging projections 22 at the opposite endsthereof.
' Beneath the projections 22 are disposed the beveled ends. of a spring 23 which is longer than the recess '21 causing the center of the spring to curve orbow outwardly when positioned on the dowel. i
The center portion of the spring is always incontact with the outer wall of the hole 18 and tends to draw the adjacent surfaces of r the projection 12 and depression 11 intofirm contact at all times.
, WVhen afterlong use of the last these surfaces become worn the spring will take up the wear, thus prolonging the life ofthe last.
- One. end of the dowel 20islpreferably made square as indicated at 25 so that said dowel cannot turn about its axis when disposed-in one of the parts of the last.
The bottom of the recess 21 is raised at the center as indicated at 26 in Fig. 2 to prevent the spring 23 becoming perfectly straight'as it is desired to retain some curvature in the springat all times. l 5
When the last is lengthened the spring 23 will beconsiderably depressed and lock'the two parts of the last together very rigidlyso that it requires considerable effort to break thelast.
The dowel 20 with its spring attachment is inexpensive to make and when installed in alast is most effective in operation.
It is believed that the operation and many advantages of the invention will be understood without further description.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. A hinged last the two parts of which have abutting curved surfaces and alined vertical slots in their adjacent faces; a hinge member in said slots provided with holes in the opposite ends thereof, one of said holes being elongated; and dowels positioned in said fore part and heel part and extending through said holes, the dowel extending through'the elongated hole having a separate spring member extending lengthwise thereof adapted to contact with the outer end wall of said hole.
