& SALES CO. INC, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK CIGARETTE BOX Application filed February 9,1929. Serial No. 338,703.
Special objects of the present invention are to provide an attractive box or case for cigarettes or the like, which may be operated to serve the cigarettes or other articles as required, which will be simple and inexpensive and which will be attractive in every way.
The foregoing and other desirable objects are attained in this invention by certain novel features of construction, combination and relations of parts as set forth in the following specification.
The drawings accompanying and forming part of the specification illustrate several of the different embodiments of the invention and it will be understood that the invention may be incorporated in other forms without departure from the true spirit and broad scope of the invention.
Fig. 1 is a perspective View of a form of the invention designed for use on a table; Fig. 2 is an enlarged broken plan view of the same; Fig. 8 is a cross-sectional view as on substantially the plane of line 33 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4: is a bottom perspective view of the sliding box portion of the apparatus, showing in particular the ejector cams at the back of the same. Fig. 5 is a front'view of an embodiment of the invention in which the top remains stationary instead of sliding with the box, as in Fig. 1; Fig.6 is a crosssectional view of this modified form of the invention as on substantially the plane of line 6-6 of Fig. 5; Fig. 7' is a broken sectional front elevation of a modification in which the box has a swinging or rotary movement instead of a straight line sliding movement; Fig. 8 is a verticalsectional View as on substantially the plane of line 8-'8 Fig. 7. p
The device consists of but two main parts, a base 9 and a sliding or shifting box, frame, rack or tray 10.
The base has a transverse trough or channel 11, usually deeper and wider than the full diameter of a standard size cigarette so that the cigarettes 12 confined within the box section will automatically drop thereinto one at a time as appears in Figs. 2 and 3.
Intersecting the delivery trough in the base is a channel 13, extending forwardly from the back of thebase and designed to freely receive an ejector cam or earns 14 projecting forwardly from the lower portion of the back wall 15 of the box. Two of these cams are shown in theform'of inclines faced toward each other, so that one or the other will be effective to eject a cigarette resting in the delivery channel depending on which way the body is shifted on the base. In the first form of the invention shown? the box is sli'dablyconfined on the base by the engagement of the cams 14in the longitudinal slot 13 at the back of the base and by the engagement of the lower edges of the back and front walls 15, 16 with the inset shoulders or tracks 17 18at the back and front edges of the base. Shoulders 19. at the ends of the rearward track 17 limit the sliding movement of the box onthe base. The parts 'may be made to fit together loosely enough so that the box may-be interlocked with the base by engaging it in tilted relation over the rear of the base, the inclined cams entering the slot 13 in this tilted relation until the front edge of the box drops into the forward track 18 as in Fig. 3 in which position the box will be confine to the base until it is purposely tilted up at the front, so that it can be backed offthe base in the reverse operation of that just; described. Thus the box or slide can be quickly engaged with or disengaged from the base, but will be confined thereto in easy sliding relation when properly and fully at 21 to serve as a convenient grip or finger piece for use in sliding the box on the base.
engaged with the base.
A suitable cover may be provided for" the The removal of this cover exposes the entire interior of the box, enabling it to be readily loaded with cigarettes placed as shown transversely ofthe base and parallel with" the delivery trough. The cigarettes follow naturally one by one into this trough and the sliding movement of the box has a tendency, by engagement of the end wall of the box with the cigarettes to keep them lined .up parallel with the delivery way. Reciprocation of the box in either direction hasthe effect of automatically projecting a cigarette from the delivery way, as indicated in Fig. 1, through the action of one or the other of the two delivery cams. The incline of these cams'is, preferably relatively gradual, as indicated in Figs. 2 and 4, so as to slide the cigarettes out gradually without breaking or injuring the ends engaged by the cams.- v
The form of the invention illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6 difi'ers'from the form first described principally in that the cover, designated is carried by the base and remains stationary instead of being mounted upon and travelling with the boxas in the first form disclosed. This cover is shown as carried by an upstanding back wall 22 attached to the back of the base by screws .23, this back wall and top being shaped and formed to harmonize generally with the 5 ase and with the. sliding box 10 As in ing of the box, the guide slot 13 for the this, construction the cover confines the box in sliding engagement on the base, there is no need for the track at the forward edge of the base, as in the first construction, and the operating handle in this case may be conveniently provided on the front of the box as indicated at 21. To enable the easy fillejector cams may open out through one end of the base as indicated at the right in Fig.
5, where the broken lines show the box as partially withdrawn for filling purposes.
In both forms described, the box or slide is an open frame and the base is a simple 7 1 structure with only the transverse delivery slot and the intersecting ejector slot, so th'a t both, parts may be easily and inexpensively manufactured, each in'one piece, molded or otherwise shaped in metal, glass, bakelite,
hard rubber, pottery, wood or other -materials and the structure lends itself readily to many ornamental shapes and designs.
The same advantages are present in the ."third. form of the invention illustrated in swinging rather than a sliding one as in the- Figs. 7 and 8, which so far as possible has been given referencecharacters corresponding to those already used. In this. last form of the invention, the motion is a rotary or first two forms, the box in this case consisting of a bell-shaped casing 10? mounted to swing on a pin 24 carried by a support 25 [standing up from the forward edge of the base 9.
The lower edge of this bell is curved to match the curvature 26 of the base and the ejector slot 13 and cams 14 are similarly curved on arcs having their center atthe pivot 24. The ejector slot may be .left open at onexor both ends of this con-f struction, so that the bell canbe swung far enough to open up for filling as indicated at the right in Fig. 7. I Operating handles 27 may be provided on the bell or the same may be swung by. direct contact with the.
body of the same. In the latter case, the side edges of the upstanding supporting arm 25 serve as stops for the fingers to limit the swinging movements of the bell to an extent just suflicient to properly eject the cigarettes. This construction has the ad- Vantage that the bell will swing back to the 2 intermediate position where delivery of the cigarette can be effected by rocking the same one way or the other from this intermediate neutral position.
The delivery of the article is quickly and easily effected by simply sliding or shifting back wall of the sameand the basehaving.

Articledelivery apparatus, comprising a member having an open delivery way in the top of the same, aycam way intersecting the rear end of saiddelivery way, an article container shiftably mountedover said delivery way, an inclined delivery cam carried by said article container at the back of the same and traversing the cam way aforesaid, said cam way being open at the back of the first member to admit the cam thereinto and said cam when enteredin the cam way confining the article container to said first member; 7 V
