lIMPROVEMENT'IN cuRRv-oMBs.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No'. l74,329,da.ted February 29, 1876; application filed January 8, 1876.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS J. WALSH', of the city, county, and State of New Yorkyhave invented an Improved Gurry-Gomb,'of which the following is a speeilication:
My invention relates to certain improvenected together in any suitable manner, or may be secured either with intervening spaces or side by side, as 1n Fig. 1, to back strips or plates, as usual. I prefer, however, to employ a back frame, B, consisting of side plates a, a and cross-bars b b. The bars may be se- -cured to the frame or plates by means of rivets, as usual; 'but I prefer to retain them by means of lips or hooks n it, Figs. v2, 3, 4,
which overlap the plates either at the extreme ends, or extend through slots or openings s, Fig. 3, and beneath the lower faces ot' the plates, the latter being thus retained securely in their positions.
When the lips are of sufficient width, or
' when they extend through openings s, they serve to determine the lateral position of the comb-plates, and to retain them therein? as well as to secure them to the frame.
The lips :may be cast with the frame, at
' right angles to thelower face, as shown in dotted lines, Fig. 2, and afterward bent down upon the faces of the comb-plates.
At the back of the comb, at any suitable distance from the side edges, are lugs d d, to which are connected the rods, bars, or frame g, extending to orformingpartot' the main side handle X, the ldrawing illustrating a frame consisting of a single wire extending through the lugs, either as shown in Figs. l and 5, or as in Fig. 4, that portion of the Wire or frame extending over the back of the comb constituting the supplementary handle, as in the comb patented to Cyrus W. Saladee, March The lugs d may be formed by casting them on, and as part of, the frame, as shown in Fig. 5, or by casting or bending the frame to form loops toV extend over the bars g, as shown in Fig. l, or in any other manner.
Heretofore it has been usual to place the lugs at the side edges, where they are liable to be broken when the comb is struck to cleanse it, while'the bars got' the supplementary handle are separated to such an extent that they cannot be conveniently grasped by the hand when it is desired to obtain a hold at the back ofthe comb. Y
By forming theV connection at the back ot' the comb the` bars may be brought as close together as is necessary, the connection between the bars and comb is-such as to insure great strength and rigid-ity to the supplementary handle, the attachments are made where there is least danger of injury, the sides ot' the comb are divested of all protuberances, and the amount of wire required and the weight of the comb are reduced.
The frame B,constructed as described, af.-
-fords a cheap, light, and strong backing for the tooth-bars, which are securely retained by the rivets or lips n. Where two back strips or plates, a a', Fig. 4, are used in place ot' a continuous frame, they are retained `with their lips n in firm contact with the toothbars by means of the wire or rods g, extending from lugs at the back ofthe plates, either directly across, as shown injdotted lines w, or otherwise.
I claim- 1. A curry-.comb provided withna side handle and with lugs at the back, to which the handle is connected through the medium of a frame or rods, as set forth.
2. rlhe continuous wire rod passing through lugs at the back of the frame, and constituting the supplementary handle, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination of the toothed bars, the
rods connecting the bars and side handle, and
:t plate or plates bent or oastto form loops,l In testimony'whereof I have signed my by which the rods are connected tothe bers, I name to' this specification iu the presence of substantially as set forth. f two'subscribing witnesses. f
et.` rBhe back pieces, having their hearings THOMASli'WALSH against the ends of the comb-bars, and con- :Witnesses: ned thereto by the frame or rods g, substzm-4 G. E. L. HQLMES,
tially as set forth. SAMUEL KILPATRIGK.
