Description
Jan. 14, 1930. BARRETT 1,743,261
LOCKING DEVICE FOR ADDING MACHINE CASES Filed Dec. 4, 1928 INVENTOR BY r-CMZ ATTORNEYS Patented Jan. 14, 19 30 UNKTED STATES PATENT OFFICE GLENN J", BARRETT, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO PORTABLE ADDING MACHINE COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS LOOKING DEVICE FOB, ADDING-MACHINE CASES Application filed December 24, 1928.
My invention relates to improvements in looking devices for hinged adding machine cases.
The objects of the invention are:
First, to provide a common means for looking both the lid or cover in position and also for locking the totaling means when desired.
Second, to provide a greatly simplified construction eliminating many of the ordinary features of a key operated lock and provide a look not readily manipulated without the key.
The invention is pointed out in the claims. A structure illustrating the same is clearly shown in the accompanying drawings, in
which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the adding machine enclosed in a suitable case.
Fig. 2 is a partial detail top view of the total buttons of the adding machine and the actuating portion of the lock, the catch or bolt being on dotted lines. a
Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the lock on line 83 of Fig. 2, showing its relation to the totaling lever of the adding machine.
Fig. 4 is a detail of the lock bolt or latch.
The parts will be identified by their numerals of reference which are the same in all the views.
This invention may be adapted to any add ing or calculating machine having an enclosed case with a hinged or removable cover portion for inspecting the adding portion of the machine, insertion 01" paper and the like.
I have shown my device as applied, for example, to the Corona adding machine. This machine is sometimes sold in combination with a cash drawer and is used to record business operations.
49 When used in this connection 'it is highly desirable to lock the hinged portion so that it cannot be raised and the record on the tape inspected by others than the proprietor or authorized person. It is also desirable to lock the totaling devices at the same time so that the machine cannot be cleared until the proprietor desires to do so. To this end I have provided structures which I will now describe.
Fig. 1 shows the adding machine which Serial No. 328,256.
may be of almost any pattern, but for convenience I have shown the Corona'adding machine, enclosed in a case consisting of the forward portion 1 which is permanently at tached to the machine, and the rear cover 5* portion 2 which is preferably hinged at the rear to the portion 1, and adapted to tilt backwardly to expose the rear portion of the adding machine, paper roll and other parts.
This case. comprising base part 1 and cover 5; 2, completely encloses the machine, there being no opening for the paper or tape when used in connection with a cash drawer which, however, is not a part of this invention and is not shown. (.5'
Adding machines of the class of the Corona have a total button or key and also a sub total button or key, the operation of which is well understood in the art. In Fig. 2 the total button 3 is carried by the total lever 4. It '1? will be understood that operation of the machine with this button 3 pushed back, prints the total upon the tape and at the same time leaves the machine clear.
The sub-total button 5 is mounted on lever T 6, the action of which is understood. Operation of the adding machine with this button pushed back produces what is known as a subtotal upon the tape but does not clear the machine. Both of these operations are well i") understood in the art.
At a point upon the lid 2 just back of the location of the total and sub-total buttons just referred to, is located the actuating portion ofmy lock. The stud 7 bearing the 53 beveled head 8 extends through the lid at this point through a proper bearing or guide sleeve 71. The upper portion or head of this stud is beveled so that it is inconvenient and practically impossible to apply a wrench or pliers to turn the same. In this beveled portion I have placed two notches 9 into which the prongs of a special key 10, or spanner wrench, may be fitted and by means of this key, the stud 7 turned into locking position. 5
The lower portion of this stud 7 is pro vided with a squared projection and a thread ed end. The locking arm or bolt 11 is placed upon this squared end of 7 and held in posin tion by the nut 12. 13 is a spring washer ho placed above the arm 11 and exerts a tension between the arm 11 and the bearing for the stud 7. The object of this spring washer is to provide enough friction to require some little power to turn the stud 7 so that it will be difficult to turn same without a key.
The case is divided as shown in Fig, 1 the rear portion being hinged and adapted to turn back upon said hinge. lVhen the cover is in normal position, as shown, bytheuse of the lrey 10 the lock arm or bolt 11 may be turned toward the front portion of the case until the forward end of the arm 11 passes under a lip 14 upon the main portion 1 of the case. lVhen the forward end of 11 is engaged under this lip 14, as described, it is impossibleto raise the lid 2. v
However,-a notch 15 is provided upon said a-rnill at a point where it will block any operative movement of the arm 6 when said arm 11 is moved into position shown by dotted lines i111 Fig. 2. When in this position this arm 11 looks. the sub-total lever 6; Said arm 11 .is also provided with another notch 16 whichis adapted totblock the total lever 1 at ,thesame time notch 15 blocks the subtotal lever ,6, Thus the cover can be locked andat the same time the total and sub-total levers be. left free; or the cover and sub-total lever can be locked and the total lever left free. If desired, complete actuation locks all the parts.
' and sub-total levers mounted near the junction of saidsections, of a locking bolt' arm pivotally mounted in one of said sections near said junction of said sections, said locking arm having an extension adapted to have locking engagement with the other of said sections of said case, when partially turned toward an extreme position, means carried by said locking armfor locking said total and Hb-tOial: levers when said locking arm is turned to its limit of locking movement, a
pivotal extension from said locking arm through said case, bearing a head with beveled edges, notches in said beveled head, a removable key to cooperate with said notches in said beveled head, and a friction means adapted to exert a'friction tension upon said looking arm.v
2., In combination with anadding machine havingan enclosing case withcover section pivotally mounted thereon, and having total and sub-total levers mounted near the junction of said sections, of a lockingbolt arm pivotally mountedin one of said sections near saidfjunction of said sections, said locking armhaving an extension adapted to have lockingengagement with the other of said sections of said case when partially turned toward an extreme position, means carried by said locking arm for locking said total and sub-total levers when said locking arm is turned to its limit of locking movement, a pivotal extension from said locking arm through said casebearing a head with 'sbeveled edges, notches in said beveled head, and a removable key to cooperate with said notches in said beveled head.
3. In combinationwith an adding machine having an enclosing case with cover section and total and sub-total levers, of a movable locking means carriedby one of said sections of said enclosing case, a locking portion carried by said movable .locking mea-ns adapted to have locking. engagementwith; the other of said sections of said case when only par:'
tially moved into anextremeposition, and
meanscarried by said main locking means the limit of its lockingposition.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
