for the purpose'hereinafter described c The sealing" plate 18'is inwardly 'offset at 31 andis then formed with a .forwardly and inwardly inclined flange 3 2 adapted to enter the space between the post flange'25 and the sealing member 26. f u#With the construction described, it is evidentthat three distinct lines of sealing contact are provided between the partsv when the door is in closed position. Should this not occur, however, the
foreign matter must then next pass the second'- lineof sealing'contactin which event the foreign matter enters the second air Vchannel 34, where it is subject to the same draft action and will be removed. Infpractice, it is extremely difficult to maintain ,a line of sealing contact continuously, due to unavoidable irregularities .of manufacture, indentations that may occur at intervals alongthe sealing elements, and from other causes, but, with the invention disclosed, v'while a small amount of foreign vmatter may possiblypass by the first lineof sealing contact, at somev point there?k in, the possibility of foreign matter passingk beyond thevsecond line of sealing contact is inv the third lineV of sealing contact.
'lleferring to the construction illustrated in F ig.2, a different'forni of doorpostis indicated at 124, the vsame being constituted by a Z-bar with a wood filler 40. In the construction illustrated in Fig. 2, whichY is typical ofmany cars nowin service, it will be observed that the plane of theouter face of the post 124 is very much closer to the outer vertical plane of the braces 112 of the carside wall and hence the actual amountof .v
clearance between the members on the rear ed e of the door isextremel small. e
n this modification, theA oor 113, bufl'eiI-- angle 117 and sealing plate 118 carried by the door, are the same as in the first described modification and it will be observed that both the membersl17 and 118 will still clear the.l
side wall braces. y
On account ofthe limited space available for the sealing member attached to the post,
a different formlis employed in the Fig. 2
construction, the-same being indicatedf'generally by the reference character v126. Said member v126 is of more or less U-formation havingk an elongated, .rearwardl extendy flange` 129 corresponding tothe flange 29,' a shorter rearwardly extending outer flange corresponding to the flange 25 ofthe post'in the first described construction, and an.in-'
termediate web or. base 41, which is secured to the post-,124 by the rivets128. structin Ithe member 126.0f U-section, as
describe the same may be accommodated between the outer planes of the braces and door` post 124, and it will be evident from the draw# ing, the same three distinct lines of sealing contacts andair channels are obtained in the construction of Fig.. 2ias in the case ofthe first described form. c y
Referring to the. i the arrangementius 211, door 213, post flange 225 and sealing plate' 218 carried by the door, is the same as in the construction illustrated in Fig'. 1. 'l
The construction of Fig. 3 differs primarily from that of Fig. 1' in the buffer angle 217 carried by the door, which is provided with a longer inwardly extending flange 222, so as to obtain a greater section modulus at the rear edge of the door. complished in the car construction illustrated, because of the available clearness which is apparent from inspection of Fig. 1, without fouling of the buffer angle with the car side braces. The sealing member 226 is:` of generally angular cross section, having a base` flange 227 secured to the post' 211 by a Series of rivets 228, the base ange in this instance projecting outwardly instead of inwardly, in order to avoid the diagonal brace of the car side. The member 226 is provided also with a rearwardly elongated flange229, in this instance, terminating in an O. Gr. curve section 230 which cooperates with the inner edge of the flange 222, as clearly shown inthe drawing. In this construction, the freev edge of the sealing plate 218 forms a sealing joint with the base flange 227 of the sealing member 226. It will be evident that the three lines of sealing contact and the two air channels .are present in the construction of Fig. 3, with the same advantages as hereinbefore described.
Although the preferred manner of carry-l ing out the invention has been described, all
changes and modifications are contemplated that come within the scope of the appended claims.
