Patented Jan. 7, 1930 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE CARLF. DIFTHER, OF EAST CLEVELAND, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO ROBERT S, MAYER, 0F CLEVELAND, OHIO nnvnnsine MECHANISM Application filed September 26, 1927, Serial No. 221,943.
My invention relates to reversible driving mechanism in which the reversal takes place automatically while the main driving member is continuously driven in the same direction.
Such apparatus is, of course, Well known, but in so far as I am aware, its construction has heretofore involved a complication of parts and complexity of operation, which it is the object of this invention to eliminate.
The said invention consists of means hereinafter fully described and particularly set forth in the claims.
My invention is particularly adaptable for use in connection with washing machines in which a reversing drum or receptacle is used.
The annexed drawings and the following description set forth in detail certain means for carrying out my invention, the disclosed means, however, constituting but one of the various mechanical forms in which the principle of my invention may be employed.
In said annexed drawings:
Figure 1 represents a front elevation of a reversible driving mechanism taken from the plane indicated by line II, Fig. 2, as particularly adapted for use in connection with a washing machine of the above-mentioned type, with parts broken away.
ig. 2 represents an end elevation of 'a fragmentary part of said mechanism taken from the plane indicated by line IIII,
Fig. 1, a fragmentary part of the reversible drum being also shown.
Fig. 3 represents a plan of said mechanism partly in section taken upon the plane inclicated by line IIIIII, Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 represents a detail view taken upon the plane indicated by line IV-IV, Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 represents a detail view taken upon the plane-indicated by line V-V, Fig. 1.
The illustrated embodiment of my invention includes a main frame 1 upon thelower part of which is mounted a motor 2. Upon the shaft of the latter is fixed ing pinion 3 which drives a gear Wheel 4 loosely mounted upon a shaft 5 which is nect-ion therewith through the medium of a manually operable clutch 7 To the inner the main driv end of said shaft is fixed a pinion 8, which v meshes with a gear 9, Fig. 1. 'Said gear is keyed to a friction wheel 10, Fig. 5. Gear 9 and wheel 10 are coaxial, as shown, and are keyed to a shaft 11, mounted in bearings 1212.
Said bearingsform a part of a framemember 13 oscillatorily mounted on shaft 5,
Loosely mounted upon a rod 14 fixed to the frame-member 13 is a gear 15 of the same size and meshing with gear 9. This second gear is coaxial and connected with a second friction wheel 16 of the same size as wheel 10, these two wheels being of less diameter than the extreme diameter of wheels 9 and 15 as shown in Fig. 3, so that theircircumferences are out of contact and are located in vertical alinement with a large driven friction wheel 17.
As shown in Fig. 2, the latter is mounted between frame land frame members 25 upon frame-member 13, Fig. 4. The axis of said shaft 21 is hence right angularly related to the axes of shaft 11 and rod 14.
Fixed to the other end of shaft 21 is a cam 23. Located in the path of rotationxof the latter are two yielding contact members 24-24, one above and the other below, which consist of flat elastic plates each suitablysecured to the main frame 1, Fig. 4.
The friction wheels are so positioned and 7 the amplitude of'oscillation of the framemember 13 such that either of said wheels 10 and 16 may be caused to engage the large wheel 17 while the other is out of engage- -ment, by shifting member 13 on its axis. mounted in a bearing 6 and capable of con- The above-described device operates as follows:
Let it be assumed that the main driving pinion is being driven by the motor continuously in the direction indicated by the arrow in Fig. 1.
The gear 4 will be driven in the opposite direction as shown by the arrow thereon, and it in turn will drive shaft 5 and pinion 8 in the same direction. Pinion 8 drives gear 9 and hence wheel 10 in the opposite direction and the latter drives gear and hence wheel 16. Wheels 10 and 16 are hence continuously driven in opposite directions as indicated by the arrows in Figs. 1 and 2.
\Vheel 17 will hence be driven in one or the other direction according as wheel 10 or wheel 16 is in engagement therewith.
Gear 9 drives the shaft 11 which drives worm 19. Worm wheel 20, shaft 21 and cam 23 are hence continuously rotated in the same direction. Said cam during such rotation alternately engages the stop-plates 2 1 and hence alternately tilts the frame-member 13 in opposite directions so as to cause friction wheels 10' and 16 to alternately engage the drive wheel 17. That is,when the cam env gages the upper plate 24 wheel 10 will engage wheel 17 and when said cam engages lower plate 21 wheel 16 will engage said wheel 17. Since as previously pointed out, these wheels 10 and 16 are continuously driven in opposite directions, the whecl 17 will therefore have its direction of rotation alternate, that is, it will oscillate and it will impart such change and oscillatory movement to the receptacle or drum 18'.
In the following claims, the'term oscillatory, as applied to the frame-member or support 13, is intended to include any to and fro movement of' the support which will effect the same or similar results as the pivotal mounting disclosed herein. 7
