Description

m T N E V m J. J. RITTER WINDOW SCREEN Jan. 7, 1930` Filed Jan. 28, 1929 A Patented Jan. 7, 1930 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE-M JOHN J'. RITTER, OF URBANA, OHIO, ASSIGNOR T0 THE W. B. MARVIN MANUFAGTUR- v ING COMPANY, or URBANA, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIOy WINDOW SCREEN Appncauon'ied January 2s, 11929. semina. 335,542.
vide intel-engaging parts between the sections of the screen such that a good sliding connection is secured and the proper relation mamtained.
In the accompanying drawings Fig. l is an elevation of the 'rear side of a screen embodying the improvements, the screen in this case being formed of two frames telescoping one with the other.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary top plan view of the same, enlarged.
Fig. 3 is a partial enlarged front elevation, the broken ends being shown in perspective.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged vertical section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 3 with a portion of a window sash shown in place.
Fig. 5 is an enlarged vertical section showing the improved screen in place between the sash and sill of a window.
Referring to the drawing, each section of the screen is formed of a frame, one indicated at A and the other at B, of sheet metal. Each frame is formed with two longitudinal top and bottom strips l and 2 connected by vertical strips 3 and 4, the strips being connected by spot-welding or any other suitable manner to form rectangular shaped frames in which the wire mesh 5 is stretched and secured. The wire mesh screen may be secured to the frames by tongues 6 and tabs 7 in the manner shown and described in my pending application Serial No. 260,997, liled March 12th, 1928.
Heretofore with screens of this type, con siderable space has been left between the sash and sill and one of the sections, owing to the fact that the sash and sill made contact on Vthat section which was off-set by reason of the telescoping construction. To obviate this 50 disadvantage and to enable the window and the strips 2.
sill to make full contact with each of the sections, the construct-ion now to be further described has been devised. p
Referring now to Fig. 4, it will be noticed vthat strip l, which may be either the top or bottom horizontal frame member of section A, has its outer edge bent to form a horizontal flange la, at substantially right angles to the vertical leg. The horizontal flange la continues as lb, and, is bent upwardly, having a slight angular deviation from the portion la and terminates in a downwardly bent flange 1c substantially parallel to the mainvertiOal strip l. Y'
The horizontal top andbottom frame strips 2 ofsection B are also bent in a peculiar .manner to form complementary members which intel-engage with the partsof frame member A. As viewed in Fig. 4 the outer edge of the frame strip 2 is bent at an acute angle to the plane of the strip 2, as indicated at'2, then turns upwardlyforming a vertical flange 2b substantially parallel to the strip 2, and it will be noticed that t-he juncture between the strip 2 and angular portion 2EL is rounded, as indicated at 8. The screen sections A and B when telescoped make contact one with the other at the rounded point 8, lateralld-isplacement beingr limited by the contactof the lower .edges of the flanges-2b with the sloping part 2Il of strip 2, and also by the fact that these flanges 2b are confined by the flanges`2l of n will be noticed. also, that the edges 9 t the bends between the flanges 1b and 1c are l 1 yro slightly outside of the upper edges 2*of the flanges 2b and that therefore in the Vassembled screen the distance between the edges 9 at the top and bottom of the Vframe section A is greater than the distance between the edges 2c in section B, so that in closing the window on. the screen, Contact is first made lwith the edges 9; with greater' pressure these edges are forced inwardly towards Aone another, until the edges 2d are met by the window and sill,
whereupuon-full contact with all edges 9 and Y 2C of the screen with sash and sill is made.
Having thus described my invention, I
members formed of sheet meta-l strips, the outer edges of the top and bottom strips of one frame member being bent to form lateral channels each of which has a sloping inner wall and an outer vertical wall, the outer edge of which wall forms acontact point. the outer edges of the top and bottom strips of the other frame members being bent to form laterally-` extending portions each of which has an inturned outer edge adapted to `be reeeivedin the corresponding channel of the other frame member to prevent lateral displacement, said laterally-extending portion being also inclmed outwardly to provide acontact point atits outer edge which (ro-acts with the con tact point on the Verticaly walllof the correspending channel, said laterally-extending portion being adapted to spring inwardly under pressure ot the window and sill to bring said contact points iii-horizontal alignment with each other, the sliding contacts between .said frame membersbeing between kthe inner ksurtaces of said laterally-extending portions .of onetrameV member and the liunetures between the channels and the strips ot the other rframe member. said juncture points being rounded.
Q.- ln a screen structure, a pair ot frame members termed of sheet metal strips, the outer edges of the top and bottom strips of one traine member being bent to Jform lateral channels each ot which hasn 'Vertical outer wall. theouter edge ot which forms a contact point for the window and sill, the outer edges ofV the-top and bottom strips of the other member being each bent to form a laterallyextending outwardly inclined portion. the outer edge of which is inturned to be received in' the corresponding channel ot' the other member, the sliding contact between the members being' on an intermediate portion of the V,under `surface of` each laterally-extending portion and the points where the channels bcvgin, the outer edges of said laterally-extending portions'forming yContacts with the wir.- dow and sill. and adapted when under tne pressure of the window andsill tobe pressed in line with the Contact point-s ot the Vertical walls ot the channel.
In testimony` whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this second day of January. 1929.
. JOHN J RITTER.
