v I. KEYS. FOOT-REST ATTACHMENT FoRHoT-Am REGISTERS. No.1'74,256. Patented Feb.29,1876.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN KEYS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN FOOT-REST ATTACHMENTS FOR HOT-Alf! REGISTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No- 174,256, dated February 29, 1876 application filed December 29, 1875.
' will enable others skilled in the art to. which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in foot-rest for attachment to hot-air registers; and it consists in the general details of construction and arrangement of parts, all as will be hereinafter more fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of my improved invention. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is an end view, and Fig. 4 is a perspective View, of one of the clamps in which the foot-rest or shelf is secured.
Similar letters of reference occurring on the several figures indicate corresponding parts.
A A represent metallic clamps of any suitable ornamental pattern, having overlapping edges or flanges b I), and provided with slots or shelf adapted to fit within the said clamps, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. 0 represents metallicbrackets, which are pivoted in the rear to the projecting flanges c on the bottom of the clamps A, and at the front to the shelf B, as shown at (1, Figs. 2 and 3.
The foot-rest or shelf B, which may be made of either wood or metal, is adjusted within the overlapping edges of the clamps A, and secured therein by a bolt, screw, or other suitable means, and the brackets O are hung within the projecting flanges c and d, as shown in the drawings.
Within the slots at in the back of the clamps A are arranged metallic hooks D, having B represents the foot-rest rounded heads, which may be adjusted at dif ferent positions requisite for the proper attachment of the invention to the scroll-work of a hot-air register. The brackets 0 may be made of a thin metal, and are sufficiently strengthened for the purpose intended by the T-shaped construction at the rear, as fully shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings.
It will be observed that the shelf B may be readily and quickly attached to the different styles of open scroll-work in the face of ordinary hot-air registers. The hooks D, playing loosely in the slots a, can be moved forward or back to fit within that part of the face of the register which may be open at that point to which the hook is directed, and the end of the hooks catching behind the scroll-work of the register, and the brackets turned in position under the shelf, thereby holding the same in a horizontal position as a rest for the feet.
By means of the hereinbefore-described details of construction, I am enabled to produce a foot-rest combining cheapness and durability with the requisite degree of strength, and readily adapted to be folded up in a small space and carried from place to place.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desireto secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The hereinbefore-described foot-rest consisting of the shelf B, metallic clamps A, and brackets O, pivoted in the bearings c and d,- the several parts being constructed, arranged, and combined to operate in connection with the open scroll-work of a hotair register, substantially as described.
2. The metallic clamps A having overlapping edges b b, in combination with the shelf B and brackets O, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own invention, I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN KEYS. Witnesses:
BERNARD HAVANAGH, W. T. BLAIRE, Sr.
