UNITED STATES PATENT oFFIcE AMOS H. PATTERSON AND BUNNIE G. MOOTS, OF BELEN, NEW MEXICO DRILL ranss This invention relates to tools, particularly to that type designed for use in boring and drilling holes in various objects or materials, and has for its object the provision of a novel bracket device and other accessories adapted to be used in conjunction with a hand brace of the ordinary type for holding thesame securely and properly with respect to `the work so that the boring or drilling of holesl will be reatly facilitated.
n important object is the provision of a device of this character so constructed and arranged as to clamp or hold an ordinary brace which constitutes the drill proper,
means being provided for centering the brace l with respect to the workA and for eecting feeding thereof to the work. f
Another object is to provide a device of this character -so constructed and arranged as to hold and utilize a brace regardless of the size thereof, adjustment being provided to take care of variations in size. 1
A further obj ect is the provision of clamp-- ing means for clamping the Work upon the a5 base port-ion of the device and also for eecting clamping of the device itself upon a table, shelf or theV like, if such is desired.
An additional object isthe provision of a device of this character which willbe simple and inexpensive in manufacture, easy to adjust and use, posit-ive in action7 efficient and durable in service, and a general improvement inthe art. V
Vith the above and other objects and adsaV vantages in view, the invention consists in thel details Vof construction, the combination and arrangement of parts tobe hereinafter more fully described and claimed and illustratedy in the accompanying drawings, in which i vFigure 1 is a side elevation lof one form of the invention.
Figure 2 is a top plan view. Figure 3 is a front elevation. Figure 4 isa detail perspective view of the work holding clamp. j
Figure 5 is a'fragmentary elevation ofthe upper end of a modiiiedform and Figure 6 is a plan view thereof.
'Referring more particularlyto the drawf ings, the letter A designates, generally, an ordinary brace such as is used by carpenters and other mechanics for boring holes in .wood or other materials. Such a brace comprises a crank member B carrying a handle C, the crank member .being formed upon a stem D which carries a chuck E for holding the drill or bit F. Carried by the crank B inalinement with the stem D is a knob G'which is, under ordinary circumstances, held either against the chestV of the operator or in the palm of the hand. The tool is of course of the ratchet type Iso that the chuck maybe rotated in one direction by Amoving the crankY portion back and forth.y
ln carrying out one form of the invention, we provide a U-shaped bracket 10 adapted to be arranged in a preferably vertical po- Y sition against` a wall or other support indicated atH and secured thereto as by means of bolts 11 or the like. The upper arm '12 of the bracket is apertured as shown for the engagement therein of the lower end of an L-shaped supporting arm `13 held in adjusted position as by means vof a pair of nuts 14 75v screwed thereunto and located at opposite sides ofthe upper arm 12 of the support or bracket. Vrfhe horizontal arm of the member 13 is shown' as provided'with a V`shaped notch 15`and afhook 16, these two elements'. being provided for the reception of the upper portion of the brace adjacent the knob Gr.
Threaded through the end portionof'the horizontal arm 12 of the bracketis a feed screw 17 having an enlarged operating head S5' 18, this feed screw preferably'having a punch 1 point or tapered or conical point/adapted to engage within a suitable punch mark or other depression at the `upper end of the stem D of the brace for holding the brace centered. 90
Extending through the lower arm 19 of the bracket is a double ended bolt 2O here shown as heldinplaceby nuts 21 and carrying a clamping plate 22 which is apertured at 23 for thefpurpose. One end of this clamping plate is provided with a lateral extension 24 bearing upon and rockably engaging the upper surface of the arm 19, the other end of this clamping plate being free and provided with a preferablyV-shaped notch 25 to guide 100 26 which is apertured at the proper place andVA engaged upon the projecting lower end ofthe double ended bolt andfheld in place by-a:y
