Description

Jan. 7, 193% E. J. LUDT Filed March 5,. 192a Patented Jan. 7, 1930 EDWARD J, LUDT, on YOUNGSTOWN, OHIO FIRE POT Application filed March 5, 1928. Serial no. 259,271'.-
This invention relates to stoves and furnaces and more particularly to a fire-box formed of sections supported one upon another, and one object of the invention is to provide an improved joint between companion sections so that the sections will be retained in proper relation to each other but permitted to be easily disconnected when necessary.
Another object of the invention is to so form the joint that the upper section will rest upon the body portion of the lower section thereby preventing the weight of the upper section from causing the portion of 1 the joint formed upon the lower section to be broken.
Another object of the invention is to so form the joint that the inner surfaces of the upper and lower sections of the fire-box will be flush with each other thereby preventing the formation of a ledge within the fire-box.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of a furnace with portions thereof broken away and disclosing a fire-box of the improved construe tion, and
Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view illustrating the improved joint in detail. WI I The improved fire-box constituting the subject-matter of this invention has been shown applied to a furnace which is of a conventional construction and indicated in general by the numeral 1. The fire-box, indicated by the numeral 2, consists of a suitable number of sections 3 which rest one upon another and have their contacting edge portions formed with joints 4 which are so constructed that the sections will be retained in proper engagement with each other with the inner surfaces of the sections flush.
The joints between the sections are of a duplicate construction and each is formed as shown in Fig. 2. Referring to this figure, it
will be seen that the lower section is formed at its upper edge with an upstanding annular flange 5 which may be referred to as an outer rib if so desired and the lower section also carries an inner annular rib 6 projecting upwardly from its upper edge and disposed midway between the inner surface of the flange 5 and inner margin of the upper edge face of the section; The inner rib is of the same thickness throughout its depth and its upper edge face is preferably disposed in the same plane as the upper edge face of the rib or flange 5, The lower portion of the upper section is externally thickened, as shown at 7, to form a thickened base for thissection, although it maybe of the same thickness as the remainder of the section if so desired and a circumferentially extending groove or pocketS whichleads from the lower edge face of the upper section is formed therein intermediate its inner and outer surfaces. It should be noted that the lower edge face of the upper sectionis of the same width as the distance between the inner surface of the flange 5 and inner margin of the upper edge face of the lower section and the groove or seat 8 is of the same depth as the rib 6 and in cross section conforms to the contour thereof so that when the upper section is disposed upon the lower section the rib 6 will be received in the groove or pocket 8 and the outer flange 5 will overlap the outer surface of the upper section. Therefore, the two sections will be interlocked and they will be prevented from moving with respect to each other. Therefore, the sections cannot slip and there will be no danger of air passing between the sections which would interfere with proper drawing of afire built in the fire-box. It will be further noted that the weight of the upper section is disposed over the body portion'of the'lower section and there will be no danger of the weight of the upper section causing the lower section to be cracked or broken. Also the inner surfaces of the sections will be retained flush with each other thereby preventing the formation of a ledge against which 'clinkers are liable to catch or against which a poker may become engaged when fixing a fire. When it is necessary to remove a section in order to make repairs or substitute a new section for a broken section, it is merely necessary to lift the upper section and it can be easily moved out of engagement with the lower section. v
Having thus described the invention, I claim:
' 1. A fire-box comprising companion sections disposed one upon the other, the lower section having upstanding inner and outer annular flanges, the inner flange being spaced from the outer flange and inner margin of the upper edge of the lower section and the upper section resting upon the upper edge face of the-lower section between the inner margin thereof and the outer flange with its inner face flush with the inner face of the lower section, the upper section being formed with an annular groove leading from its lower edge'face and receiving the inner flange of the lower section.
2. A fire-box comprising companion sections disposed one upon the other with their edge faces contacting and their inner side faces flush, one section having its said edge face formed with a circumferentially extending groove and the other section having inner and outer annular flanges projecting from its said edge face, the inner flange being snugly received in said groove and the outer flange overlapping the outer face of the first section in contacting relation thereto.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature.
