This invention relates to buildersfhardwareandmore particularlyto a. door holder by means of which: a, door may be securely fastened when shut or. retained ina partially opened position. u j
One object of the invention 1s to provlde a device of this character including a post carried by the-door anda; latchingbar adapts ed to be. connected with a door frameand m movable. into and out ofposition to engage thepost,
. Another object. of the invention 1s:t0 yield ably resist movement of: the post and latching bar relative: to. each other when the post 1s is engaged wi hthelat hing bar nd th s pr vent a. rattling noise. a
Another object of: he invention; is to allow the postto be slidably engaged withthe latching bar or releasably engaged by a hook at l no the free, end of the. latching. bar.
The invention is illustrated inthe accom panying drawings, wherein Figure lis aperspective vlew shown the doonclosedand the latching bar secure out of position to engagethelpost. carried by the door Fig, 2' is. a perspective view showing the latching bar engaged with the post and. disposed to prevent opening of' the door Fig. 3; is. a perspective v ew showing the latching bar engaged withthepost and in position tov retain the door partially opened, and V t Fig. 4 is a top plan View showing a door retained in a. artially openedposition bya latching bar of? a modified construction.v
The door holder constituting the sub ect- .matter of this. invention is employed tore; tain a door 1 in either a closedor a partially opened position and includes a latching. bar 2 which is'formed of strong metaland may be of i any desired: length. This bar" has one end formed with an opening 3 to receive a staple or. eye 4, and'by an inspectionofEigs. 1,2 and 31itwill be. seen. that the latching bar may be disposed in either a. depending: POSI- tion ora substantially horizontal position and when in the depending position may be moved either into or out of position to secure the door. The eye iiscarried by a plate 5which.

is secured to the door frame 6 by screws or other suitable fasteners and is formed with marginalflanges so that a cushion 8 which is formed of rubber and projects through an opening 9 in the plate may be retained in position by an enlarged base disposed between theplate 5 and the surface of the door frame against which the plate is secured. A longitudinally extending slot 10 is formed in the latching bar andrecesses 11 which are spaced fromeach other longitudinally of the bar lead fromione side edge of the slot. Adjacent the attached end of the bar the slot 10 terminates in a. curvedextension 12 and at the junction of the slot with the side extension is formed arecess 13 which is of greater dimensions than the recesses: 11 and also of greater dimensions thanithe width of the slot or its extension. A hook ltis provided at the free 7 end of the latching bar and at its attached end thelatching bar is provided with a finger 15 whichprojects therefrom in alinement with the rear end of the sideextension 12 of the slot. In order to prevent the latch bar from swinging toward and away from the doorframe When inthe inoperative position shown in Fig. 1,therehas been provided a keeper 16 including a base or block 17 secured against the door frame and a latching strip 18 which is pivotedto the block or base and of such length that when turned from the position shown in Fig. 2 to that shown in Fig. 1, it can. straddle'the slot 10 and prevent the latching bar from swinging away from the door frame. The block is of such width 5 that it may be snugly receivedin the slot andof such depth that its outer face will be substantially flush with the outer face of the latch bar. Therefore, when the latching stripis turned to the operative position, it will bear against thelatching bar at opposite sides of the slot and securely hold the latching barfagainst movement. Therefore, if. the device is. applied to the door of a state room upon a boat. or train, movement of the boat or train. will not cause the latching bar to swing toward and away from the door frame with resulting noise and marring of the door frame.
The post 19 which is carried by the door a and cooperates with the latching bar is also formed of metal and is provided with a base 20 having openings formed therein to receive securing screws 21. This post may be either long or short according to whether the door opens inwardly or outwardly and adjacent its free end it carries a pin which projects transversely from the post'and terminates in a head 22. The head is of such size that it may be passed through the recess 13 to dispose the pin within the slot of the latching bar but is of sufiicient diameter to prevent it from passing through the recesses 11 or through the slot at any point except the intersection of the slot with the extension 12 where the recess 13 is located. It will thus be seen that, when the pin is passed through the recess 13 and into the slot, the post and the latching bar will be connected and cannot accidentally separate.
When the improved door holder is in use, the base plate 5 of the mounting is secured against the door frame adjacent the upper end of the door opening at one side thereof and the post is secured to the door adj acent its top and close to the free side edge of the door. \Vhen the latching bar is secured to the door frame, as shown in Fig. 1, the door may be freely opened and closed. By releasing the latch strip 17' and swinging the latching bar into position to permit the pin to be passed through the recess 13 and into the slot 10, the latching bar may be swung downwardly, as shown in Fig. 2, to dispose the pin at the upper end of the curved extension 12. When so disposed, the latching bar will serve very effectively to prevent the door from being opened. Instead of moving the latching bar into position to dispose the pin in the side extension 12, it may be supported in a substantially horizontal position after the pin has been moved into the slot and the'door can then be opened as far as desired and the pin disposed in a selected recess or seat 11. 'When this is one, the door will be retained in a partially opened position, as shown in Fig. 3, and it cannot be entirely opened. If a person should attempt to enter a room having the door retained in a partially opened position, this will be prevented as the pin cannot move out'of the slot except through the recess 13 and the door must be closed before this can be accomplished. It
will thus be seen that an unauthorizedperson cannot release the'latching bar from the pin by standing outside'the room and then open the door a sufiicient distance to enter. When the latching bar is in the horizontal position shown in Fig. 3, the finger extension 15 bears against the cushion 8 andthe cushion will be subjected to sufiicient pressure to cause it to have a tendency to press upon the finger and thereby cause the pin to be yieldably retained in the seat 11 in which it is disposed. This not only prevents the pin from accidentally slipping out of the desired recess and permitting the door to move open beyond a desired extent but also prevents rattling noises which would be caused if the pin fitted loosely in the recesses. When it is desired to only temporarily retain the door partially opened, the pin is engaged by the hook 14. When this is done, the door may be securely retained in a partially opened position but the latch ing bar can be very easily detached from the pin and return to the inoperative position without its being necessary to first close the door in order to move the pin longitudinally through the slot and pass the pin outwardly through the recess 13.
The latching bar, which is shown in Fig. 4 and indicated by the numeral 23, is quite similar to the latching bar shown in Figs. 1. 2 and 3, but instead of being straight throughout its lengths it is curved longitudinally. This form of latching bar is intended to be disposed above the door instead of to one side of it. When this form of bar is employed, the base plate of the mounting 24 corresponds to the base plate 5 is secured in a horizontal position above the door opening in the door frame and the post 26 is secured to the door in such a position that its pin 27 will project vertically from the post above the plane of the upper edge of the door. Therefore, the latching bar may extend horizontally above the door.
Having thus described the invention, I claim:
1. A door holder comprising a mounting including'an attaching plate adapted to be secured adjacent a door opening, an eye projecting outwardly from said attaching plate,
a cushion of yieldable material projecting forwardly from said attaching plate in spacedrelation to said eye, a latch bar loosely engaged with said eye and formed with a longitudinally extending slot having side notches, the inner end of said bar being adapted to bear against said cushion when the arm is extended away from the mounting, a post adapted to be secured to a door, and a pin projecting from said post and adapted to be slidably received in said slot and provided with a head to releasably retain the pin in the'slot.
2. A door holder comprising a mounting adapted to besecured adjacent a door opening and including an eye, a cushion carried by said mounting in spaced'relation to said eye, alatch bar loosely engaged with said eye and having its attached end provided with a'finger to bear against said cushion when the bar is in an extended position, said bar being formed with a longitudinally extending t-rack'having seats leading therefrom and spaced from each other longitudinally of the track, and a post adapted to be secured to a door and provided with a pin slidably received in said track and engageable i n the seats to releasably retainthe door in a set position.
3. A door holder comprising a mounting adapted to be secured adjacent a door opening and including an eye, a latch bar loosely engaged with said eye its free end provided with a hook, said bar having a longitudinally extending track formed with seats leading transversely therefrom, and a post adapted to be secured to a door andprovided with a pin extension adapted to be engaged by said hook and slidably received in said track for move- -ment from one seat to another whereby the door may be releasably secured in adjusted positions.
