My invention relates to improvements in telegraph transmitters, and it consists in the combinations,` constructions, and arrangements herein described and claimed.

In carrying out my invention, I provide a glass base 1 having a metallic underplate 2 of the general contour shown in Figure 3. A lock nut 26 is provided for locking the supporting screw 24 in adjusted position to the post 25. A short-circuit switch 831s electrically connected and pivotally mounted upon the base portion 6 of the frame 5 by means of a bolt 34. The switch 33 is arranged to be received in a switch socket 35 which is rigidly secured to the base 1 and to the underplate 2 by means of a screw 36.
A reversible table 37 is provided with elongated slots 38 extending outwardly to the opposite corners thereof and is arranged to be adjustably and removably secured to the base 1 and the underplate 2 by means of bolts 39. A positive terminal post 40 is mounted upon the table 37 adjacent one of the other corners thereof. A post 41 is rigidly mounted upon the table adjacent the remaining corners and is adapted to receive a dot contact screw 42. A dot contactor 43 is adjustably disposed upon the vibrator 15 having its point of contact in alignment with the dot contact screw 42. The dot contact screw may be locked in adjusted position toward or away from the dotcontactor by a lock nut 44. A
A mute 45 having an under portion extending at right angles is arranged to be secured to the base 1 by means of a bolt 46. r1`he bolt 46 also extends through a rubber cushion 47 and secures both the rubber cushion and the mute to the base 1. The mute is provided with openings 48 arranged to receive a bolt 49. The bolt 49 is to secure a stop 50 to the mute 45 at either of the openings 48. At the present time, the stop is shown to the right and is for a right-handed operator. A weight 51 is adjustably secured to the lvibrator 15 by means of a set screw 52. The movement of the weight 51 upon the vibrator varies the speed of the oscillatory movement of the vibrator'.
A right-hand stop screw 53 extends through the arm 8 toward the pivot bar 14 and is arranged to limit the movement Of the pivot bar and to abruptly stop the same. The stop screw 53may be locked in adjusted position by means of a lock nut 54. A left-hand stop screw 55 is carried by the arm 10 and arranged to be moved toward or away from the pvot bar 14. The purpose of the stop screw 55 is to limit the movement of the pivot bar when the device is positioned for a lefthanded operator. The left-hand stop screw 55 may be locked in adjusted position by means of a lock nut 56. A rocking screw 57 is carried by the arm 11 and is positioned in engagement with the pivot bar adjacent the pivot screw 18. The pivot screw 57 is held in locked position by means of a lock nut 58. Tension screws 59 and 60 are carried by the frame 5. The tension screw 60 is carried by the arm 9 and is arranged to'be locked thereto by means of a lock nut 61. A compression spring 62 is carried by the inner end of the tension screw 60 and engages with the pivot bar adjacent the pivot screw 18. The tension screw 59 is provided `at its inner end with a tension spring 63 which engages with the pivot bar 14 and is arranged to hold the pivot bar and to move it into its normal position.
From the foregoing description of the various parts of the device, the operation thereof may be readily understood. The device as shown is assembled for a right-handed operator. One` side of a circuit may be electrically connected to the positive terminal post 4() and the other side of the circuit may be electrically connected to a negative terminal post 64 which is carried by the frame 5 between the arms 10 and 11. v The purpose of the short-circuit switch 33 is to cut off the set from the main circuit. The switch 33 is moved tree from the socket 35 before the device can be operated.
To operate the device for transmitting dashes, the operator moves the pivot bar so that the dash contactor will engage with the adjacent end of the contact screw. During this movement of the pivot bar, the pivotscrew 18 rocks upon the point 19 and the adjacent end of the pin 21 swings through an arc from the point thereof as a center. This movement of the pivot bar is against the tension of the spring 62. Therefore, when the operator releases the pivot bar, it is returned to its normal position; i. e., in engagement with the rocking screw 57 by means of the tension spring 62. As the dash contactor engages with the dash contact screw, the circuit is completed, allowing the source of current to pass from one side of the circuit through the positive terminal post, through the bottom plate 2, through the post 30, the dash contact screw 29, the dash contactor 27, the pivot bar 14, the frame 5, the negative terminal post 64, and the other side of the circuit.
To operate the device for transmitting dots, the 'forward end of the pivot bar is moved to the left-thus swinging the vibrator and the rearward end of the pivot bar to the lett until it strikes the right-hand stop screw 53. rifhis motion of the pivot bar is about the screw 18 as a pivot and the pivot bar rocks upon the end of the screw 57 as a fulcrum. rlhis motion of the pivot bar creates an oscillatory movement oi" the vibrator, and during this oscillatory movement of the vibrator, the dot contactor is moved into and out of engagement with the adjacent end of the dot contact screw 42. As the dot contactor is in engagement with the dot contact screw, the circuit is closed, permitting the source of current to pass from one side of the circuit through the positive terminal post 40, the
table 37, the post 41, the dot contact screw 42,
the dot contactor 43, the frame 5, the negative terminal post 64, and the other side of the circuit.
The parts of the device may be moved so as to equip the device for a left-handed operator. To do this, the stop 50 and the bolt 49 are moved from the right-hand opening 48 to the left-hand opening 48. The bolts 39 are then made loose, allowing the table 37 to be removed from the base 1. The table may then be reversed and again secured to the base 1 so that the positive terminal post 40 will be upon the left-hand side of the vibrator and the post 41, together with the dot contact screw 42, positioned .upon the right-hand side of the vibrator. The dot contactor, which is frictionally held to the vibrator 15, may be vremoved and positioned so that the contact point is in alignment and arranged to engage with the inner end of the dot contact screw. r-1'30 Y by means of the bolt 7.

1. A device of the type described comprising a base, a metallic underplate disposed adjacent the under surface of said base, a frame disposed upon said base and rigidly secured thereto, said frame being provided with side walls, each having forwardly and rearwardly projecting arm portions, a supporting plate disposed upon said frame and rigidly secured to said arm portions, a pivot screw extending through said manipulator and supported by said frame, and means carried by said supporting plate for holding'said manipulator against displacement.
2. A device of the type described comprising a base, a metallic underplate disposed adjacent the under surface of said base, a frame disposed uponA said base and rigidly frame being provided with side walls, each having forwardly and rearwardly projecting porting plate disposed upon said frame and rigidly secured to said arm portions, a pivot screw extending through said manipulator and supported by said frame, means carried by said supporting plate for holding said manipulator against displacement, and a fulcrum screw carried by one of said arms and liavingthe inner end thereof disposed in engagement with said manipulator.

A device of the type described comprising a base, a metallic underplate disposed adjacent the under surface of said base, a frame disposed upon said base and rigidly secured thereto, said frame being provided with side walls, each having forwardly and rearwardly projecting arm portions, a supporting plate disposed upon said frame and rigidly secured to said arm portions, a pivot screw extending through said manipulator and supported by-said frame, means carried by said arm portions, a supsupporting plate for holding said 'manipula-u ;carried by one of said arms and having the inner end thereof disposed in. engagement with said manipulator, said manipulator being arranged tol move about the adjacent end of said fulcrum screw, andspring means carried by one of the side walls of said frame for normally holding said manipulator in a desired position.

A device of the type described comprising a base, a metallic underplate disposed adjacent the under surface of said base, a frame disposed upon said base and rigidly secured thereto, said frame being provided with side walls, each having forwardly and rearwardly projecting arm portions, a supporting plate disposed upon said frame and rigidly secured to said arm portions, a pivot screw eX- tending through said manipulator and supported by said frame, supporting plateV for holding said manipulator against displacement, a fulcrum screw carried by one of said arms and havingthe inner end thereof disposed in engagement with said manipulator, said manipulator being arranged to move about the adjacent end of said fulcrum screw, spring means carried by one of the side walls of said frame for normally holding said manipulator in a desired position, said manipulator, and a dash contact screw disposed in alignment with said dash contactor and electrically connected to said underplate, said manipulator moved for bringing said engagement with said dash contact screw.

A device of the type described comprising a base portion, a metallic underplate disposed adjacent the under surface of said base portion, a table member disposed upon said base, a dot contact screw disposed upon said table member, a terminal post disposed upon said table member at a position spaced apart from said contact screw, a manipulator extending over said table member whereby said contact screw may be positioned uponV one sidethereof, a dot contactor carried by said manipulator and arranged to be moved into when said manipulator is actuated, and means for adjustably and removably securing said table member to said base for electrically connecting said table member with said underengagementwith said dot contact screw,
plate, whereby said ltable member may be` reversed for positioning said contact screw upon the opposite side of said manipulator.

In a device of the type described, a frame, a manipulator, a pivot screw supported at its lower end by said frame and extending through said manipulator, a supporting screw adjustably carried by said frame and extending substantially at right angles with respect to said pivot screw, and means in ovably secured to the upper end of said pivot means carried by said a dash contactor carried by screw and operativelg connected to said supporting screw, Where y the uneven Weight of said manipulator may be supported by said su porting screw.
