My invention relates to improvements in telegraph transmitters, and it consists in the combinations, constructions, and arrangements herein described and claimed.

Figure 4 is an end elevation of my device. In carrying out my invention, I provide a glass base 1 which is provided with an underplate 2 of the general contour shown in Figure 3. Rubber cushions 3 are secured to the underplate rat spaced-apartpositions and ad jacent the torward end of the base 1 by means of screws 4 or the like. A mute 5 is provided with an integral portion 6 which extends at right angles therefrom and which is arranged to be disposed in engagement with theunder surface of the base 1, see Figure 2. A rubber cushion 7 is disposed adjacent the portion 6 of the mute 5. The cushion 7 and the mute 5 are rigidly held in engagement with the base 1 by means of abolt 8. The mute 5 is: provided with a stop 9 which is secured there to by means of a screw 10.
A frame 11 having a flattened bottom portion 12 is disposed upon the base 1 and rigidly secured thereto by bolts 13. The frame 11 is provided with side walls 1 1 and 15 which have rearwardly extending projections or arms 16 and 17 respectively. The side walls 14 and 15 are joined by an integral arch or arcuateshapedtop 18 which is provided with a for wardly extending lip 19.. A pivot bar 20, which extends from the point 21 to the point 22, is provided with a threaded opening 23 arranged to receive a pivot screw 24-. The pivot screw 24 is provided with a cone-shaped end 25 which is receivable in. a cone-shaped recess 26 in the bottom portion 12. The pivot bar 20 is locked in adjusted position to the pivot screw 24. by means of a lock nut 27. The pivot screw 24: is provided with a head portion 28 having a conical-shaped recess 29 therein arranged to receive the conical-shaped end of a retaining screw 30. The retaining screw extends through a threaded opening in the lip 19 and is arranged to be locked to the lip by a lock nut 31.
A finger bar 32 extends along the side of the pivot bar 20 and is provided with a portion 33 which extends at right angles therefrom and upon the top of the pivot bar 20. The finger bar 32 is pivotally secured at the inner end by means of a screw 34 which extends within the pivot bar 20 adjacent the end 22. A finger piece 35 is secured to the forward end of the finger bar 32. The finger baris held in close proximity to the pivot bar 20 by the tension of a coil spring 36 which is disposed concentric with a bolt 37 The tension of the spring 36 may be varied by moving the nut 38 toward or away from the finger bar upon the bolt 37.
The pivot bar 20 is provided with an integral portion 39 which is arranged to receive a stop screw 40. The stop screw i0 is arranged to engage with the side wall 15 of the ONE-FOURTH To; a
frame 11 and is adapted to be locked in adjusted position by means of a lock nut 41.
A dash cont actor 42 is adjustably secured to the finger bar by means of a bolt 43. A
dash contact screw 44 is carried by a post 45 and is arranged to be secured in adjust-ed position and in alignment with the dash contact or by means of a lock nut 46.. The post 45 is rigidly secured to the base 1 and to the underplate 2 by means of a screw 47.
A tension spring 48 is disposed against the inner end of the pivot bar 20 for holding the pivot bar in normal position when the device is not in use. An adJusting screw 49 is carried by the arm 16 of the frame 11 for varying the tension of the spring 48. The adJusting screw 49 is held in ad] usted position by means of a lock nut 50 whlch is arranged to engage with the arm 16. A stop screw 51 is carried by the arm 1? and is arranged to be moved toward and away from the end 22 of the pivot bar 20 for limiting the movement of the carrying bar. The stop screw 51 may be held in adpisted position by means of a lock nut 52.
A vibrator or vibrating bar 53 has one end rigidly secured to the pivot bar at by any suitable means, preferably rivets. The other end of the vibrator 53 is arranged to engage with the stop 9 and is provided with a weight 55 which is adjustably secured thereto by means of a set screw 56. A dot contactor 57 is adjustably secured to the vibrator 53. A dot contact screw 58 carried by a post 59 is arranged to be moved toward or away from the dot contactor 57 and rigidly held in adjusted position by means of a lock nut 60. The post 59 is secured to the base 1 and the underplate 2 by means of a screw 61.
A short-circuit switch 62 is pivotally mounted upon the bottom portion 12 of the frame 11 by means of a screw 63 and is arranged to engage with a switch socket 64 which is secured to the base 1 and the underplate 2 by means of a screw 65. A positive contact post 66 is secured to the bottom plate 2 and extends through the base 1. A negative contact post 67 is carried by the side wall 15 of the frame 11.
From the foregoing description of the various parts of the device, the operation thereof may be readily understood. By attaching the terminal posts 66 and 67 with the usual circuit, the device may be placed in condition for operation by moving the short-circuit switch 62 free from the socket- 64. The frame 11 and all the mechanical parts attached thereto are in electrical connection with the negative terminal post 67. The underplate 2 and all the mechanical attachments secured thereto are in electrical connection with the positive terminal post 66. In transmitting dots, the operator forces the finger bar to the right (assuming that the operator is facing the forward portion of the device). During this movement, the pivot bar 20 is moved about the pivot screw and the vibrator is swung outwardly from the stop 9, bringing the dot contactor 57 into registration with the dot contact screw 58. The pivot bar 20 is moved until the stop screw 41 engages with the side wall 15 of the frame 1. The sudden stop of the pivot bar causes vibration of the vibrator and the electrical circuit is made and broken in rapid succession by the rapid movement of the dot contactor into and out of registration with the dot contacting screw. The number of contacts may be varied by the length of time in which the operator holds the pivot bar and the vibrator in this position.
In transmitting dashes, the electrical circuit is made and broken more slowly. This is done by moving the finger bar to the left about the screw 34 as a pivot and against the tension of the spring 36 until the dash contact-or 42 is brought into registration with the dash contact screw 44. The circuit is closed as long as the operator holds the fin ger bar in this position. When the finger bar is released, the spring 36 moves the fin.- ger bar so as to separate the dash contactor from the dash contact screw and to move the finger bar into its normal position, that being in engagement with the side wall of the pivot bar 20.
When the dot contactor engages with the dot contact screw, the circuit is closed, permitting the source of current to pass from the positive contact post through the underplate 2, through the screw 61, the post 59, the contact screw 58, the contactor 57, the vibrator 53, the pivot bar 20, the pivot screw 24, the frame 11, and the negative terminal post 67 When the dash contactor engages with the dash contact screw, the circuit is 7 again closed, permitting a source of current to pass through the positive terminal post 66, the underplate 2, the screw 47, the post 45, the dash contact screw 44, the dash contactor 42. the finger bar 32, the pivot bar 20, the pivot screw 24, the frame 11, and the negative terminal post 67.
The main circuit may be shorted from the device by moving the switch 62 into engagement with the switch socket 64. This is the position of thedevice when it is not in use.

I claim:
1. A transmitting instrument comprising an insulating base, a metallic plate disposed adjacent the under surface of said base, a terminal post adapted to be connected to one side of a. circuit, a frame mounted upon said base, a terminal post carried by said frame and arranged to be connected to the other side of the circuit, a manipulator disposed in electrical connection with one of said terminal posts and arranged to be moved into electrical connection with the other of said terminal posts,
. said frame having a bottom portion, an integral lip extending outwardly from said frame, a pivot screw extending through said manipulator, means disposed in said bottom portion for pivotally supporting one end of said pivot screw, and means carried by said lip for pivotally holding the other end of said pivot screw.
2. A transmitting instrument comprising an insulating base, a metallic plate disposed adjacent the under surface of said base, a ter a manipulator, means disposed in said bottom portion for pivotally supporting one end of said pivot screw, and a retamlng screw car- :2 ried by said lip and provided with a conicalshaped end arranged to be received in a conical-shaped recess in the other end of said pivot screw for pivotally holding said pivot screw.
3. A transmitting instrument comprising an insulating base, a metallic plate disposed adjacent the under surface of said base, a terminal post adapted to be connected to one side of a circuit, aframe mounted upon said base, a terminal post carried by said frame and arranged to be connected to the other side of the circuit, a manipulator disposed in electrical connection with one of said terminal posts and arrangedto be moved into electri-, cal connection with the other of said terminal posts, said'frame having a bottom portion, an integral lip extending outwardly from said frame, a pivot screw extending through said manipulator, means disposed in said bottom portion for pivotally supporting one end of said pivot screw, means carried by said lip for pivotally holding the other end of said pivot screw, and means for locking said manipulator to said pivot screw.
4. A transmitting instrument comprising an insulating base, a metallic plate disposed adjacent the under surface of said base. a terminal post adapted to be connected to one side of a circuit, a frame mounted upon said base, a terminal post carried by said frame and arranged to be connected to the other side of the circuit, a manipulator disposed in electrical connection with one of said terminal posts and arranged to be moved into electrical connection with the other of said terminal posts, a lip integral with said frame and disposed at the upper portion thereof, said frame having a bottom portion, means disposed between said lip and said bottom portion for pivotally supporting said manipulator, said manipulator comprising a pivot bar pivotally mounted substantially adjacent the center thereof, and a finger bar extending the full length of said pivot bar and pivotally mounted at one end upon one end of said pivot bar.
5. In a device of the type described, a frame, a bottom portion integral with said frame and having a conical-shaped recess therein, a lip integral with said frame, a pivot screw having a conical-shaped end receivable in said conical-shapedrecess, a manipulator having a threaded opening arranged to receive said pivot screw, whereby the position a of said manipulator may be varied with respect to said bottom portion, means for locking said manipulator to said pivot screw, and means carried by said lip and arranged to engage with the other end of said pivot screw for pivotally holding said pivot screw.
