Description

Dec. 31, 1929. P. "Ks 1,742,141
' FASTENING DEVICE Original Filed Sept. 26. 192B 27 e5 a la [ze i. v `lfmulll INVENTOR ATTORNEY Patented Dec. 31, 1929 UNITED STATESY FASTENING DEVICE Application. filed September 26, 1928, Serial` No. 308,569. Renewed November 9, 1929.
The object of this invention is to provide means for securing together two sections of an article of furniture, such as a secretary or bookcase, wherein the upper section is usually made detachable from the lower section.
A further object is to provide a device of this kind which may readily be applied and which will not mar or damage the respective sections.
A further object is to provide a device which shall include a mounting plate to be secured to the lower element of the upper section of the article of furniture, a tubular member to be carried by this plate, and Ielements constituting` the equivalent of screw eyes adapted to pass through openings in the plate and to be positioned at the opposite ends of the tubular member and in alignment therewith, permitting the insertion of a longitudinal screw for connecting the parts together.
l/Vith the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of elements described, illustrated and claimed, it being understood that modifications may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawing forming part of this application z- Figure 1 is a fragmentary view in vertical section showing the upper and lower portions of two sections of the article of furniture to be connected together by the fastening this plate member constituting a tube mounting device, when used as in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a vertical transverse section showing the relative position o-f the apertured screw members to be attached to the lower section, the longitudinal plate and the longitudinal tubular member.
Figure d is an end view of the tubular member.
Figure 5 is an end view of the plate of Figure 2, with the longitudinal screw in position, the head of the latter appearing in this view.
Figure 6 is an elevation of one of the apertured screw members constituting a screw eye, and it will be noted from Figure 1 that one of these members is to be threaded, the other having'` a smooth bore.
The articleof furniture is assumed to include an upper section anda lower section, the bottom element of the upper section being designated 10 and the adjacent element of the lower section being shown at 11. rFliese two sections are to be connected by the fastening device herein disclosed, and the lower element 10 of the article of furniture is cut away to form a groove or the lilre 12, a chamfered portion' being provided at 13 to permit the longitudinal plate of the fastening device to be countersunk in the element 10.
This plate just referred to is designated 14;, and includes an upstanding end portion 15 having apertures 16 therein for the accommodation of a longitudinal screw 17.
Mounted in the plate 111 between openings 18 and 19 therein is a tubular member 2O adapted to receive the screw 17, the latter being threaded at 21 and the threaded portion cooperating with the threaded head 22 of an element constituting a screw eye, the threaded shank of which is designated 23.
A similar screw eye or screw retaining device is designated 25 and has a shank portion 26 adapted to enter the element 11. These devices 22 and 25 are first to be applied to said element 11, and will be in position to pass into or through the openings 18 and 19 in plate 14C, it being understood that said plate 14 has been or will be secured by means of screws such as 27 and 28 applied in the positions shown, or in other suitable positions.
Additional screws such as 29 pass through plate 1li and on opposite sides of tubular member 20, and enter the element 10 of the upper section of the article of furniture.
The longitudinal screw 17 is caused to enter the aperture 16, passing thence into the tube 20, and is advanced, by the use of a screw driver entering the slotted head of the screw, into the head 22, threaded as indicated, and by this means the two sections of the article of furniture are securely held by a concealed fastening device, the only point from which it is accessible or from which it can be observed, being at the rear.
Having described the invention what is claimed is 1. In a fastening device for furniture, a plate having openings therein and including an upstanding end portion provided With an aperture, a tubular member mounted on the plate, and threaded apertured elements adapted to pass through the openings of the plate adjacent to the ends of the tubular member, and a longitudinal screw passingl through the tubular member and through said elements at the ends of the tubular member.
2. Ina fastening device for the sections of an article of furniture, one of said sections being cut away to form a groove, a plate member for closing the groove and spaced from the inner Wall of the latter, said plate member having openings therein, headed apertured screw devices adapted for connection with one of said sections of the article of furniture and positioned in spaced relation longitudinally of the plate, a tubular member mounted on said plate between the latter and the Wall of the groove, and a longitudinal screw passing through an end portion of the plate and through said headed members, the latter projecting through the openings in the plate, and the plate having connection with the other section of the article of furniture.
