Description
Dec. 33, 1929.,
S. J. JOHNSON GARMENT HANGER COVER Filed Aug. 13. 1928 Patented Dec. 31, 1929 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE SAMUEL J'. JOHNSON, CINCINNATI, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE S EINSHEIMER PAPER COMPANY, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO GARMENT-HANGER COVER Application filed August 13, 1928. Serial No. 299,168.
This invention relates to improvements in pliable paper coverings or envelopes for commercial garment hangers and is particularly directed to an improvement incorporated in the type of covering or envelope disclosed in my copending application, Serial No. 239,227, filed December 10, 1927, for garment hanger cover.
The garment hanger now in commercial use, and to which the present improvement has especial applicability, is formed of a length of wire, the wire being bent into a triangle, the upwardly disposed ends thereof intertwisted and one end terminating in a hook. f
It is an object of this invention to provide an inexpensive pliable paper envelope for a hanger \vhichincorporates a means for locking or maintaining the envelope in position relative to the hanger, this means cooperating with the formation of the hanger at the apex thereof. This type of covering or protector is designed to eliminate the use of pins or other sharp fastening devices for holding the covering in place which might be inj urious to delicate garments supported on the hanger. It furthermore achieves the object of providing .an inexpensive covering for a hanger which is quicklyvapplied thereto and located in locked position by a means formed integral with the envelope.
Other objects! and further advantages will v be more fully set forth in a description of the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which:
Figure 1 is a front view of the envelope showing it in locked position one hanger, the hanger being illustrated in dot and dash lines.
Figure 2 is a View of the reverse or rear side of the-covering shown in igure 1, showing the locking tab or flap folded against the rear side of the envelope.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary detailed View of the apex portion of the envelope showing it apart from the hanger and as furnished to the user.
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken on line 44, Figure 1, detailing the folding of the fla l leferring to the drawings, the commercial before being turned upwardly at right angles and intertwisted.
One of the intertwisted ends of the strand of wire is of a greater length and is bent to form the attaching hook 4 for the hanger. The protecting envelope or covering is substantially of the same shape and contour as the hanger, completely enclosing or enwrapping the hanger but. leaving exposed the straight apex portions 3 and the extending llOOk.
The envelope as heretofore disclosed is formed of a single sheet of material folded upon itself and joined by overlapping and adhesively securing the adjacent ends along a seam 9 at the rear side centrally of the envelope.
The particular pattern formation and fold ing provides an open base 5 for the covering and an orifice 6 through the apex thereof so that the hanger may be inserted bodily through'the lower end of the envelope and the hanger hook forced through the orifice in the apex, the orifice being of a dimension to permit the passage of the hook therethrough. 7
A locking tab or flap 7 is formed by continuing upward the front wall 10 of the hanger.. The tab is of the same width as the orifice and the edges 8 of the orifice formed by the rear wall sections of the envelope are substantially straight cut. The tab may be of any suitable height to permit its manipula- -tion and to render it eflicient in a manner hereinafter described.
The straight portion of the hanger or the portion of the strand of wire adjacent the intertwined ends thereof is disposed slightly above the rear edges of the orifice of the covering, and the flap prior to tucking and folding lies flat against the face of the shank or intertwined portions of the hanger.
As shown in Figures 1 and 2 the flap is tucked underthe straight apex portion 3 of the hanger and folded down against the rear side of the covering. This enwraps the envelope tightly at the apex point and prevents any accidental dislodging of the envelope from its position or any lateral shifting relative to the hanger hook shank whichwould result due to the large hook clearance opening 6. a
Having described my invention, I claim 1. A pliable covering for commercial clothes hangers, comprising, a fiat triangular shaped envelope of supple texture paper material having a full width open lower end adapting the envelope to be slipped over the hanger and open at the apex for the projection of the hanger hook therethrough, and a lock flap formed integral with a side of the envelope adjacent the opening at the apex, said flap extending upwardly from the margin of the opening and folded on the line of joinder of the flap with the body of the envelope and against the face of the envelope and thereby adapted to be'slipped under the hanger hook portion.
2. A pliable covering for commercial clothes hangers, comprising, a flat triangular shaped envelope of paper material having an open lower end adapting the envelope to he slipped over the hanger and open at the apex for the projection of the hanger hook therethrough, and a tab formed on the envelope adjacent the opening at the apex, said tab folded on a line coincidental with the line of the apex of the envelope and insertable under the hanger bar portion which extends across the opening in the envelope for locking the envelope on the hanger.
3. A pliable covering for commercial clothes hangers, comprising, a flat triangular shaped envelope of paper material having an opening in the apex thereof for the projection of the hanger hook therethrough, and a lockingflap formed on the envelope extending upwardly from one face thereof adjacent the opening, said flap adapted to be tucked into position beneath the hook portion of the hanger for locking the envelope on the hanger.
In witness whereof, I hereunto subscribe my name.
SAMUEL JOHNSON.
