Description

Dec. 24, 1929. G. DINARDO ET m.
BLOWER AND SMOKE CONSUMER Filed April 2, 1928 win 66/757221?! INVENTOR ATTORN EY Patented Dec. 24, 1929 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE GIOVANNI DINARDO, OF PHILADELPHIA, AND JOHN CEFFARATTI, OF DAR-BY, PENNSYLVANIA 'BLOWE-LB, AND SMQKE CONSUMER Application filed April 2,
The present invention relates to an improved blower and smoke consumer, and a purpose of'the invention is to provide a device of this kind, wherein it is the object to not entirely absorb the smoke, but to prevent the black smoke from soft coal discharging its contents into the air over a large area, and at the same time create substantial draft at the base of the stack, especially the stack of a locomotive, though not necessarily, as the present invention may be used on other stacks.
Another purpose is to provide a blower and smoke consumer especially adapted for use on the interior of the stack at the base thereof and near the top of the stack, the base section of the device constituting the blower proper, while the upper sections, though they have blowing characteristics, that is to create a draft, constitute the consumer, the several sections of the device varying in diameter, the base section being the larger and acting to create a draft close to the inner surface of the wall of the stack, the second section being less in diameter and designed to create a draft near the center of the stack, while the upper-most is still smaller in diameter and designed to create a draft, the three drafts being what is turned force drafts,
leaving the stack in cylindrical formation, said columns of draft being one within the other, acting to carry the smoke to a considerable height from and above the stack. In this manner the black smoke such as soot,
dirt and the like, receiving a dampening action from the steam, which creates a consuming action and particularly carrying the smoke a substantial distance in the air, preventing it from being scattered over a very 40 large area.
Still another purpose is to provide the lower section of the blower and consumer with outlet nozzles that will create very fine sprays of steam through the stack, acting to create a substantial draft and at the same time absorb the smoke.
It is to be understood that the particulars herein given are in no way limitive, and that while still keeping within the scope of the 59 invention, any desired modification of details 1323. Serial No. 266,810.
and proportions may be made in the construction of the appliance according to circumstances.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts to be hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings Figure l-is a view in section of a portion of a locomotive showing the smoke stack and illustrating the improved blower and smoke consumer applied, one section thereof being at the base of the stack and the other two sections adjacent the upper end of the stack.
Figure 2'is a plan view of the same.
Referring to the drawings, 1 identifies the flower and smoke consumer as a. whole, which consists of the base section 52 disposed at the base of the stack 3. This base section is in the form of an annular or circular tubbing connected to a T 4, which in turn connects to a pipe section 5, which in turn operatively connects in any manner with a source of steam supply. As an example this pipe section 5 may connect with the steam chest, so as, to conduct steam under pressure to the blower and smoke consumer.
The pipe section 5 includes a T 7, to which an upstanding pipe section 8 is connected. The upstanding pipe section 8 has a cook or valve 9 for controlling the flow of steam through the upstanding pipe section.
The circular base section 2 of the blower is provided with a plurality of upstanding outlet spray nozzles 10, which act to discharge a plurality of sprays of steam upwardly through the stack and adjacent the inner surface of the wall of the stack, and which steam acts to absorb the black smoke and soot, and at the same time discharge the smoke in general from the stack in a cylindrical contour, or in a tubular formation, as the smoke emanates from the top of the stack.
The upper part of the pipe section 8 has a T 11, which is connected to a second T 12 by means of a nipple 13. A circular or annular blower and smoke consumer section 14 is connected to the T 12, and is provided with a plurality of discharge nozzles 15, acting to discharge a plurality of sprays of steam upwardly through the stack, that is at the upper end of the stack and a substantial distance from the inner surface of the wall of the stack. This second discharge of steam in sprays is also in tubular formation or cylindrical arrangement in a diameter much less than the spraying of'the first spray of steam from the base section.
The extreme upper end of the pipe section 8 has an elbow 16 connected to a T 17 by a nipple 18. The T 17 also has a smoke consumer pipe section 19 of a diameter much less than the smoke consumer section 14, and this section 19 has a plurality of discharge nozzles 20, discharging a plurality of sprays of steam in tubular or cylindrical formation, said formation being of substantially less diameter than the first and second blower and smoke consumer sections.
The arrangement in construction of this device discharges a plurality of cylindrical formations of sprays of steam, one formation being within the other, acting to blow the smoke and soot from the stack, the black smoke and soot being absorbed and causing the smoke to discharge a substantial distance above and away from the stack, preventing such smoke from spreading over a substantially wide area.
The invention having been set forth, what is claimed is:
1. A blower and smoke consumer for a stack, comprising a blower section within the stack adjacent its base, said blower section having connections with a steam supply, upper blower and smoke consumer sections within the stack adjacent its top having operative connections with the source of steam supply, and means intermediate the upper blower and smoke consumer sections and the base section, whereby the steam may be cut off from the upper blower and smoke consumer sections, said blower and smoke consumer sections decreasing in diameter from the base section to the uppermost section, whereby a plurality of cylindrical forms of steam sprays one within the other may be discharged through the stack.
2. In a blower and smoke consumer for a stack, the combination with an upper smoke consumer section within the stack, comprising two circular sections one above the other, the lower one being of a larger diameter than the upper one and having outlet openings for directing jets of steam upwardly in cylindrical formation upon the outside of and concentric with similar jets of steam directed upwardly from the upper circular pipe, a lowermost blower section within the stack at the base therof comprising a circular pipe with outlet openings for directing jects of steam upwardly and through the stack in cylindrical formation on the outside of and concentric with the first two cylindrical jets of steam, said latter cylindrical formation of jets of steam from the lowermost blower acting to consume the black smoke and soot and at the same time discharge the smoke in general from the stack, a steam pipe operatively connecting to all three of the circular pipe blower sections in the stack, said steampipe being on the exterior of the stack and adapted for conveying steam to all three blower sections, means associated with the steam pipe at a point below the blower section at the base of the steam for shutting oif steam to all three blower sections, and means associated with the steam pipe at a point just above the blower section at the base of the stack for shutting off steam to the first two circular blower sections.
In testimony whereof they aflix their signatures.
