This invention relates to improvements in ice cutting machines and has particular reference to an ice shaving device.

The principal object of this invention is to provide an economically constructed and sanitary shaving device that will thorough- 1y scrape the ice positioned therein without experiencing any Waste of ice, and at the same time will efiiciently perform the shaving operation in a minimum amount of time with a minimum amount of effort upon the part of the operator.

Another object of the invention is to pro vide in the device weight means for conveniently steadying the ice within the container so that the ice will be positively held during the entire shaving operation.

Another object is to provide in the cutting means employed a unique arrangement of the blades so that a fastand smooth cutting of the ice will be readily accomplished.

A further object of the invention is to produce a device of the character described which is highly attractive and ornamental in appearance, one which will be durable in construction and efficient in use.

In the accompanying drawings wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 designates the base of the device which has provided therein an opening 6 which acts as a drain. On this base there is mounted an ice holding container which is preferably cylindrical in form and is equipped with a door 8 through which access may be readily had to the interior of the container.

This container is provided with the usual top 9 havingmounted thereon a pulley 10 and a guide 11, the purpose of which will be hereinafter fully described.

As disclosed to advantage in Figures 2 and A, the container is equippedwith a partition 12 which can be made as a unit with the container, which partition together with the sectional partition 13 carried by the door 8 forms a substantially rectangular frame which serves to retain a block of ice in position so that the base of the same may be contacted by the shaving elements to be hereinafter described.

The interior of the container has provided thereon bearings 14 and 15 in which is received a shaft 16, which carries a roller 17. Positioned within this roller are a plurality of blades which are illustrated to advantage in Figure 3, the numeral 18 designating one type of blade and the numeral 19 another cutting blade.

It is to be noted that various types of cutting blades may be readily employed and by way of illustration, I have shown two types of blades that may be utilized that will assure a fast and smooth cutting action when the blades contact the ice which is indicated by the numeral 21 Referring to Figures 2 and A, the numeral 22 designates a weight which has connected thereto the end of a chain 23 which chain extends through an opening 24 provided in the top of the container and is reaved over the pulley 1Q and passes through a guide 11. This chain has mounted thereon a ring 25.

As before mentioned, this weight element serves to exert pressure upon the ice for the purpose of steadying the same in the container. It will be obvious that when the weight has been lowered in the container, the ring 25 will contact the guide 11 and will limit the downward movement of the weight, which action eliminates the danger of the weight striking the blades when the ice has been consumed in the shaving operation.

It is to be noted that a receptacle such as a glass 26 is positioned beneath the roller 17 so as to receive the shaved ice that falls through the hopper 27 that is carried by the partition 12.

For the purpose of permitting a flavoring of the ice, I have provided openings 28 in the container through which a flavoring extract may be sprayed or otherwise injected for the purpose of flavoring the shaved ice retained within the glass 26'.

While I have shown secured to the shaft 16 a hand Wheel 29 having a crank 30 for the purpose of rotating the roller through manual actuation, it is to be understood that motive power can likewise be applied for rotating the cutting elements.

It is to be understood that while I have illustrated a convenient form of container for the purpose of setting forth the novel mechanism for shaving ice, I propose in the trade to employ an ornamental container which will simulate a column of colored snow.

The outside of the machine is enameled in blended colors and sprinkled with imitation snow or a similar preparation for the purpose or enhancing the attractiveness of the device.

It is to he understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that various changes relative to the shape, material, size and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claim.-

Having thus described my invention, I claim An ice shaving device comprising a container, a hinged door closing an opening in the side thereof, partitions in said container and carried by said door respectively, said partitions cooperating to provide an ice receiving chamber formed in a manner to fixedly hold ice against turning, an outlet provided in said container for guiding shaved ice to a receptacle, a weight for engaging the top of the ice, a flexible element having an end secured to said weight, a ring secured to the opposite end of said flexible element, a guide for said flexible element and providing a stop for said ring to limit the downward movement of said Weight, an ice shaving roller in the bottom of said container and means for rotating said ice shaving roller.
